Either the heater matrix or an associated coolant hose - behind the centre of the footwell - is no doubt leaking. The smell of hot antifreeze would confirm this. You may be able to investigate further with the aid of a torch and mirror.

Hi all,

Looking for a bit of advice. I'm looking to sell my much beloved Z4 in order to free up the equity to buy a house, and instead move across onto a Personal Lease to get a car for 2 - 3 years until the house is bought, and I can buy something fun again.... Read more

I've just moved on from a '59 plate A3 Sportback with the Sport equipment level. It's was a very nice car indeed, returned 40-50mpg according to the computer and was very comfortable. Other people at work have the same 1.6tdi (Great engine) in the Golf Bluemotion, I think the Audi's interior is better than the Golf but that's just a personal opinion.

in 18 months I had 2 issues -
One morning it wouldn't start - engine warning lights all on, the Audi Assist came out and plugged in the laptop but didn't have the softeware for the 1.6TDi engine as it was new. The fault luckily seemed to clear itself and he thought it could have been a loose battery terminal.
Second fault was a rattle from the interior lighting surround, I was going to flag it at the service but it's gone to another employee now.

Sport spec was good - climate, hi-line computer, sports seats (Very supporting) metal interior trim. Only problem - bone crunching suspension and understeer - typical sport trim Audi!...

looking around for a larger car to replace my fiesta, must be an estate due to two kids plus pushchairs and all their stuff. i was keen on mondeo's, looking at 1.8 tdi's but after reading horror stories about the fly wheel failing and brake problems i am not so sure now, also looking at skoda octavia's but have also read about problems with them, for my budget the car will have around 70-100k on the clock, i do about 13k a year and the car must be economical hence why i am looking at diesels, and have reasonable repair costs so can someone either re-assure me about the fords or recommend something else to look at? With enough effort-yes. Finding space in the engine bay is the least of the problems though. Any euro IV diesel is electronic for a start and will not be a drop in. How would the ECU recognise an immobiliser that doesn't exist? How would an electronically controlled gearbox change speed without a signal from a speed sensor? A modern 5/6 speed tranny will take a lot of transmission tunnel 'massaging' to fit. The 3 speed C6 is quite compact. The existing cross member wouldn't adapt to the new transmission. The driveshaft would have to be cut down, custom engine mounts welded in...

Heck, it would be easier to convert the 6.9 to natural gas than retrofit an electronic diesel!...

I'm contemplating buying a Superb Mk 1 - 130 PD manual as recommended here and everywhere else as the best engine/gearbox combination. I know anything PD from MY 2004 will be good but there aren't many 2004's around but quite a few 2005s. I guess the answer might be flipping obvious ie not the best injectors hence the numbers for sale? Can someone kindly advise if a 2005 model will have these injectors? What will be the right engine codes to ensure I only consider lumps with the Bosch solenoid injectors? I have AWX as one to look for. Are there any others? Thanks very much. Read more

craig-pd130

thanks, 659 -- interesting. The 18ft-lb difference between the AVF and AWX would probably falls within the production variances from engine to engine, anyway.

The 1.9 PDs always seem to rate a good 5 - 10% higher than factory specification when dyno'd.

I forgot to mention...

Although i have not had a front sidelight fail more than a handful of times in fifty years of motoring the front sidelights in this present Subaru are a problem. When the car was 18 months old one side light failed, and I brought it back on by slapping the wing next to the headlamp unit. This has happened several times since, first one side then the other, and up to now slapping the wing has always brought the bulb back on. Why ?... sometimes the filament breaks and jolting the bulb reconnects and welds the ends ... sometimes it is corrosion in the lampholder ... whichever it was I don't know, but slapping worked - until now. So, I will replace both bulbs with ones I bought from the Toyata dealer. Why Toyota...20 miles difference in journey.

I've noticed that there are small patches of oil appearing on the ground underneath the car when it is parked. I've had a look underneath and thought I located the drips to the sump - after wiping the oil away I could feel a little spot on the sump that feels corroded. I have spoken to a garage (just over the phone, they haven't seen the problem) and they said that the sump is rusted and will needed replacing. They quoted me approx £100 for parts and labour which seems reasonable, but are there any alternative ways of fixing the problems and is the car safe to drive until I can take it in, which wouldn't be for a couple of weeks? Many thanks in advance. Read more

"Don't. DO NOT touch the sump."

And, if it's not the sump you waste £34/40 on a new sump and still have the leak!! If its that bad that cleaning it will produce a catastrophic failure next time you go through a flooded road or gravel track the effect will be the same....
