How do you do RT !!

I did a search on Technical Discussion to see if anyone had gone before in the changing of the side light bulb on the Subaru Outback / Legacy ’56 reg. Your post came.up. “We stand on the shoulders of giants, so to speak”.

Do you still have an Outback, and do you remember the layout of the headlamp unit fixings ?

I posted a question on 1st April regarding the same. I am conscious of how clumsy I am, how easy it is to break things, and how costly it will be if I mess up.

Hillman - I'm afraid I can't remember any more than I posted before - as I said battery out for the nearside and wheelarch trim for the offside - but I haven't done it, I managed to replace main & dip bulbs both sides without taking the headlights out.

My Outback is no more - I wrote it off last year avoiding a tractor - I can vouch for their ultimate strength though as we walked away with just bruises - and it didn't break the headlights!

Sorry about the crash, hopefully you were not injured. Did you see the pictures from Australia where a young woman drove her car from the fifth florr of a multistory car-park and sustained a cut to her head ?

Re the Subaru, I can't envisage removing the battery and then having to reboot everything, so I'm down to removing screws and fixings and see where it gets me. I was in my local independant service garage recently, where the 'Man' is really experienced. He was reassembling the front headlamp unit of a car and remarked disgustedly that he'd just spent an hour replacing a bulb. As my neighbour said, "It was much easier when we all had Morris Minors.

I forgot to mention...

Although i have not had a front sidelight fail more than a handful of times in fifty years of motoring the front sidelights in this present Subaru are a problem. When the car was 18 months old one side light failed, and I brought it back on by slapping the wing next to the headlamp unit. This has happened several times since, first one side then the other, and up to now slapping the wing has always brought the bulb back on. Why ?... sometimes the filament breaks and jolting the bulb reconnects and welds the ends ... sometimes it is corrosion in the lampholder ... whichever it was I don't know, but slapping worked - until now. So, I will replace both bulbs with ones I bought from the Toyata dealer. Why Toyota...20 miles difference in journey.
