looking around for a larger car to replace my fiesta, must be an estate due to two kids plus pushchairs and all their stuff. i was keen on mondeo's, looking at 1.8 tdi's but after reading horror stories about the fly wheel failing and brake problems i am not so sure now, also looking at skoda octavia's but have also read about problems with them, for my budget the car will have around 70-100k on the clock, i do about 13k a year and the car must be economical hence why i am looking at diesels, and have reasonable repair costs so can someone either re-assure me about the fords or recommend something else to look at?

4k will just about stretch to a early Mk2 Octavia with high mileage or a late mk1.

Both are good cars, and they're huge inside too. They don't have many issues and they're very economical. Aslong as it has a full service history, you'll be fine.

Also Octavia's don't suffer from many 'problems'.

Agree with iCraig. The 1.9 TDI engine in the Octavia is reliable as it doesn't have the modern addenda that cause trouble in ageing cars. That engine is also in the Passat and Golf estates, but you'll get a newer Octavia than Passat for your budget, and the Golf, although excellent, has a little less room for people and luggage.

I've nothing against the Mondeo, and one hears of examples doing six-figure mileages without trouble. The truth of it is that you need to try to get something with a full service history and a mileage that isn't too high and isn't too low.

Many of my posts might look like they are repetitive but in truth 4k will buy a fairly good VW Passat estate diesel aound 02-05 TDI. They are excellent cars and have 2 in the family both 04 plates and well over 100k on both. This car seems like a fine example of what I mean

Go mondeo :) Having said that, the VW posted doesn't look too bad at all!

All cars have failures, and most diesels have DMF's. These apparently go at 130k on average.

Look at the reliability surveys on http://www.reliabilityindex.com for example. Shows the mondeo as more reliable than the Octavia.

You can't be seriously saying a Fix Or Repair Daily Mondeo is more reliable than an Octavia?

I wonder why the Octy scores better in the JD Power Survey if thats the case? Also the WD Reliability index I'd take with a pinch of salt as its only lower as Fords are so ten a plenty the parts are cheaper. Just compare HJ's Whats bad on each car....the mondeo comes out far far worse!

Fix Or Repair Daily is a better bet than Fix It Again Tomorrow. I prefer Some Kind Of Downmarket Audi, as they aren't all that downmarket.

Reading the acronyms for Ford and Fiat got me thinking about other makes...

Save Ks On Downgraded Audi... 'Ardly Use Direction Indicators... Spanish Energy And Temperament... Rubbish Electrics (Never Auto!) Useful Loadluggers; Tedious... Did Arfur In Minder Let Er-Indoors Ride? Hideously Ugly Machine, Mobile Environmental Ravager ... Latin Automobile, Nice Curves - Interiors Awkward...

I can only go by my years of troublesome VAG motoring and subsequent years of trouble-free Ford motoring. And the independent surveys of course :) Interesting thread about surveys here: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=74701

They are both close enough in different surveys to call it a draw, to be honest.
