Ok, so I'm still having problems with my 307 DTurbo 2.0 HDi 110. Its down on power and it seems like often the turbo does not kick in. Im guessing the turbo is not kicking in because sometimes it accelerates really slowly and there is no turbo whistle. Whereas other times it pulls nicely and there is a high pitched whistle as the turbo spins happily. I've read about turbo wastegates getting stuck and causing these problems. Can anyone explain to me how the wastegate works and how I go about checking it and fixing it if needed on my car.

Thanks very much in advance. Read more

There are lots of threads on 'turbos not working'. The usual fault is to do with wastegate actuation (or lack thereof) leading to turbo overspeed.

Hi, my timing belt has snapped and i really could be doing with advice, please. The car is and x-reg and i have been told its a safety engine and it would be a case of outting on a new belt and driving away. Im not soo sure and this does appear to good to be true. I have also been told to try putting the car in 3rd gear and try turning the car tyres more than twice by hand and is this works there is no damage. There has been other bits of advice, however i really am totally at a loose end. Any advice is truely welcome as i miss my car :(

many thanks..... Read more

Pete-you're the XUD expert IIRC?

Yeah, most diesel engines do this because of the flat firedeck. But with a pentroof chamber, the valves should hit the piston at an oblique angle and simply bend. I think this might yield another false negative! I am assuming a lexus of that age will be a gas engine though...

In March I was towing my horsebox 1000kg with a 700kg horse and a 200kg pony so below the towing capacity. I was on a motorway in 5th gear cruising along when I noticed thick black smoke coming out of the exhaust, next thing the car began to accelrate by itself, I came off at the next junction and it seemed fine, I got back on the motorway and shortly after it done the same again. I came off the motorway and the rev's went to 6000, I paniced and turned the engine off as I thought it was going to blow up, it was rolling down a hill and wouldn't start again but then started once I had stopped at the bottom.

The car went back to the garage I bought it from who believed air had got in to the fuel system, they contacted me to say everything was fine with the car. I have since used it in everyday driving and also towing. On Sunday 17th April, I noticed the rev's were idling at 1500 when usually it idles just below 1000. I started driving the car with the trailer on with the 200kg pony in and as I was approaching a dual carriageway in 3rd gear it started blowing black smoke out and again in 4th. My partner thought I was imagining it so he then drove, he got the same problem but thought there was a loss of power alongside the smoke. I have sent it in to the garage again.... Read more

Not a lot of information to go on. Is it a diesel? What year? I wouldn't ignore a fault that caused a car togo into limp home mode. If it's a recent diesel, it'll probably be a DPF regeneration problem. I think peugeot use Eolys exhaust fluid to help with regeneration. If the reservoir is empty, it'll require replenishment

nb: Eolys is NOT an 'overpriced' version of adblue urea solution as some people believe. Adblue is used for dealing with NOx and has nothing to do with the particulate trap!

My Renault Scenic II 1.9 dci has loss of power, gutless compared to what it was, and is showing check emissions and check injection messages on display. We put it into garage xause it was due for all its belts to be changed anyway so it went in for that and the garage said the problem was egr valve so we had it replaced. Picked it up and after about 2 and a half mile the messages showed up again and with the same messages and it lost its pwer again, the same as when it went in!! Took it back and they cannot find anything wrong with it, except the only thing it showed when plugged back in was "turbo pressure regulation fault" but 6 months previous to this my car had a whole new turbo fitted as last one blew plus mechanics checked it when fitting egr valve this time. Theres no noises and no smoke, nothing, what do I do with it, or what could it be?? Its just a nightmare a schizophrenic nightmare at that. Any advice on any of this would be greatly appreciated as patience is growing increasingly thin and it not gonna survive much longer...Thanks Read more

I have a 2003 turbo diesel octavia which seems to have developed a turbo problem resulting in a lack of power under acceleration.

When accelerating what i assume is the turbo seems to stutter a couple of times before 'winding up' properly. It sounds as though there is air escaping or not moving through the system properly.... Read more

Found myself thinking about this having seen all the new Skoda's on the road home from work yesterday evening. Has the term 'Mondeo Man' become 'Skoda Man'?

I say this because I feel that there are few cars that Ford make which really are that much better than Skoda.. I think of them now as the thinking mans car... Read more

The DMF and clutch kit cost around 500 sterling without carriage. I have several friends from Romania that bought the parts from the same supplier and they have no problem at all. Actually this how I found out about this way of purchasing the parts.

But now that you've mentioned the possibility of fake parts, I'll try to see if there is any way to check the product code on LUK website or anywhere else. ...

My 53 plate Corolla, on 82,000 miles, keeps losing power and then cutting in again, usually once during say a 20 mile run, but now getting more frequent; not funny when trying to enter a roundabout with traffic approaching! No warning lights come on; it has been regularly serviced, and fuel cleaner put in at each service. Last service was last August, when the air filter was also changed. The Toyota dealer thinks it is valves sticking, but they are ok when they test them, so they said to "let the fault develop" before they can find the cause - but the thought of it happening during an overtake or on a motorway makes me nervous.

Any advice would be welcome: I don't feel I can sell it in this state, but an expensive repair might be more than the car is worth. Read more
