My MOT test is due and a menacing noise has appeared, just 2 days ago,
Under acceleration no noise
Under braking no noise
When freewheeling - in gear or not in gear, engine on or engine off, I get a grinding noise from up front like a bearing noise
At very slow speed less than 1 mph I can sometiimes make the car go clunk, clunk, clunk as I move very slowly with the wheel turned.
I thought it would be a CV joint, but I've been under the car & I find no play in any of the 4 CV joints, I'm no expert but there's no noticeable play.
The only noise I get when under the car (front on axle stands) is a small clunk sound from the gear box when I rock either front wheel back and forth. but I would have thought that was normal.
Surely it has to be CV joints, but how to check this please?
Will this pass the MOT like it is? As I’d like to get that out of the way and then fix this problem without the hassle of the MOT needing doing.
Any ideas what the problem might be?
Previously the gear linkage on this car got stiff for 1st & 2nd (for months), but I realigned it 2 weeks ago - coincidence?
Also during the snow and ice when wheel spinning there was a few occasions when I had a clunk from the driveshaft/gear box due to the wheel spinning.

I would like to know the symptoms of a worn timing chain or chain guide. I recently bought a Micra and I did an oil change on it yesterday. As I got it to operating temp I noticed a rather loud ticking noise a bit like tappets noise but seemingly from in the block rather than the rocker cover. When the revs are increased it ceases but as soon as it goes back to idle , it comes back and it isn't quiet.
If it is and I attempt the job, does the head need to come off as I have read this online in a forum but there is no mention of that in the Haynes manual. Read more
Thank you so much for sharing such a useful information tutuapp

Oh the Mk2? Even better! Thats still my favourite of all the ones they've made. My parents had three of them (two Ghia's and one Ghia X V6) and they never had any complaints with them.
Does anybody have a Peugeot 207 that had to have its brake disc replaced at 30,000 mile? It seems very early to me? Read more
I often wonder why some drivers ride the brakes all the way down a hill instead of dropping a gear or two, as I was taught when I learnt to drive.
I used to be in the 'use the gears to brake' camp; I'm not any more....
Anyone with any idea of why the audio system should suddenly fail? Sound comes and goes, with a crack just before sound returns for a few seconds. Bluetooth disconnected but fault persists. Estimates for despatch and repair, non-Volvo, a bit scary and can't even consider Volvo unit replacement. Advice please. Read more
Hey Nigel, what did you find out? I had an experience similar to the one described in the post before yours - A couple of years ago, the audio stopped and didnt return for a few months. It just went out this week and no amount of testing speakers - put on the center one, dolby, etc. changes it. No sound. So I am interested in what anyone found out.
Thanks....
My 2002 Suzuki GV with the Peugeot RHZ engine(DW10ATED) and Bosch electronics which has done only 225000 miles has started going into occasional limp mode. When it does it usually throws a P0903 fault code and usually after about 5 miles.
This ODB2 P0903 code implies that the clutch actuator is reading high. I guess they mean high resistance/impedance i.e.open circuit.... Read more
Hello Picman,
I am so sorry for bumping up this old thread. I love off-roading and recently bought a Grand Vitara with exactly the same engine and unfortunately, exactly the same problems....
I've got a citroen picasso 1.6 HDi and on a drive I lost power and an engine light came on. Turns out the impellor on the turbo broke. I also had failure of an injector and carbon build up. Replaced them both and the pipes and flushed out the oil twice. Engine light has gone off but white smoke is blowing from the exhaust. Citroen garage now say I need a new turbo as this one looks broken and is rattling (after only 4 miles and I did prime it with oil) and the exhaust is full of oil so I need a new one. What would cause this turbo to break so quickly? And do I really need a new exhaust. Read more
Not an unknown problem with this engine. Seems to be prone to sludging up its oilways if the servicing has not been 100% or perhaps been used on a lot of short journeys.
Here is another recent thread http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=90548...

the merc 814 vario (the one with a bonnet) i had for doing recovery work was good. basic, but how fancy do you want? are you shifting a couple of weekend ponies or premium race horses? the vario has a bonnet and the bulkhead under the dash unbolts to allow acces to the engine. i was getting about 20 mpg even when loaded.

With any auto with a few miles on the clock I'd have the transmission serviced by a specialist such as Stephens Engineering, if it was sound when you bought it, a service should mean it'll last the life of the car - this includes the many so called "sealed for life" 'boxes which usually means "sealed for death" if you don't get them serviced. Don't trust your dealer to service the autobox - they won't know what they're doing.
blimey . seems like it was the ATF, strange that the box was opperating perfectly as usual. what a relief nice to be able to drive with the windows open again. shame it was the last thing i got round to thinking off.
when my tyre went out off balance the noise was more wub wub wub.
