Volvo V70 06 Plate - Intermittent audio problem - stivvy

Anyone with any idea of why the audio system should suddenly fail? Sound comes and goes, with a crack just before sound returns for a few seconds. Bluetooth disconnected but fault persists. Estimates for despatch and repair, non-Volvo, a bit scary and can't even consider Volvo unit replacement. Advice please.

You haven't had the car valeted or has any water got into the rear footwell? Sounds more likely to be a problem with the amp which lives under the driver's seat than the head unit its self. Check the connections under there first.

Thanks for the tip which I will check out. Not mentioned before by anyone so worth a look. No the car has not been valeted but did go thro some floods a while back. Also fault occurred a few days after having new battery fitted. May not be relevant but on the other hand...

IIRC the amp drives all the speakers except the centre speaker which comes directly from the head unit. Put the unit in ProLogic or 3 channel mode and see if the centre speaker has any sound when the rest cut out. If it has or behaves differently from the others in terms of pops or whatever then the amp is probably at fault.

You can swap the headunit for a used one and it'll probably work although the button illumination and remote control may not unless it is reprogrammed. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. If it is the amp then you can just swap it with one from a scrap yard - you need to remove the driver's seat to get it out but it is not as big a job as it sounds.

Thanks very much for all your advice. I have located the amp unit and found everything bone dry. (As well as an empty drink can, a lost pen and some coins~!) I'll give your recommendation a try. Cheers.

Did the checks you suggested. When the sound goes live the front speaker is always on with the others sometimes but not always bursting in before sound goes completely. The popping is fairly constant when there's no sound. Conclusion?

Hi stivvy, I know this post is old, but did you ever get to the bottom of this issue? I have a 2006 Volvo V70 and it has developed the exact same problem, it's driving me nuts! The audio comes on randomly with a loud pop and in most cases stays on for the rest of the journey but sometimes doesn't come on at all, you just get a low clicking sound every 3/4 seconds from all speakers.

The radio/cd comes on and everything else seems to work, just no sound!

Put it in Dolby mode and check if the centre dash speaker works (it is driven directly by the head unit). If it does, it is most likely the amp which is the problem, if it is doing the same as all the other speakers it is probably the head unit.

Hello Stivvy, I have exactly the same problem.

On my case I have a Volvo S80 from 2008. Everything looks to be OK but it has happened to me 3 times:

1.- I leave the car parked (with no problems)

2.- The day after I get into the car, switch it on and... NO SOUND AT ALL!. Everything is alive, but no sound at all (no parking sensors beeping or music from the speakers, no handsfree either...).

3.- After a few hours... (it can be also days) suddenly I heard a "ZZZZZ" noise from the speakers and 3 seconds later I get sound again like if nothing were wrong... VERY STRANGE!.

How have you or someone else on this forum fixed it?.

I have the basic audio package (no amplifier under the seat), I think it´s called "performance".

Please I will be very thanksfull if someone can answer, I´m quite desperated.

This might be something to do with the Central Electronic Module (CEM).

I've been looking into the fault for my dad's volvo coupled with his dodgy accelerator which might be the ETM.

Seems moisture through a leak, condensation or whatever can get in and will obviously cause problems.

The car's going in to Volvo this Monday, I'll report back what was found.

Hey Nigel, what did you find out? I had an experience similar to the one described in the post before yours - A couple of years ago, the audio stopped and didnt return for a few months. It just went out this week and no amount of testing speakers - put on the center one, dolby, etc. changes it. No sound. So I am interested in what anyone found out.
