A relative who works in the BBC buildings (not for the BBC) often admires a stunning new Ferrari 599 GTO parked in isolation near the goods despatch area. It belongs to a well known tv and radio presenter, who owns several classic Ferraris (you probably know who this is).
It was only after about the fifth time of admiring the car that he realised it has no front-number plate, only the rear (personalised) one. The famous owner simply pays the £60 fine everytime he's caught - there's no points attached to this offence. It also means he can ignore Gatso average speed cameras.... Read more
I'm looking for a midsize for less than £,000 which will seat 5 adults comfortably on a long journey. I though an 02ish Mondeo would be ideal. The only problem is the hump in the middle of the back seat. Would 3 adults sit comfortably side by side in MK1 Renault Scenic? Any other suggestions welcome.

HI THERE, MY SON HAS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM.
TRY THIS THREAD FROM SAXPERIENCE....
I recently had the displeasure of hiring a new Kia Cee'd diesel hatchback. Leaving aside my impressions of a fairly nasty and uncomfortable driving experience, the car did break down and the RAC had to be called. The fault was that the car would not unlock itself, even with the key in the door lock. Turning the key in the doorlock gave no feeling of a mechanism being activated, which I though was odd. The RAC managed to get into the car via a back window, and as soon as the key was in the ignition, and the car started, everything was fine. All the locks then worked as normal, so I am left thinking that in the Cee'd at least, there is no physical key locking mechanism in the door, rather just an electronic switch.
So, I am wondering how many other modern cars have this unhelpful design feature. As long as the battery is not dead and that there are no electronic gremlins, this is fine, but I'd rather have a system that allows me into the car irrespective of what might be wrong with its electrics. Read more
The problem is more complex than just unlocking the doors, as the immobiliser and/or alarm have to be taken into account in most cases.
Having never used the key in the locks on my last three cars over the last 8 or 9 years, I tried to unlock my cee'd with the key yesterday and the doors opened OK, but the alarm sounded. I'm exploring that one!
Air con stopped working, although light on switch illuminated, electro clutch on compressor did not operate. Booked into an a/c "specialist" who regassed the system to no avail and presented me with a bill and estimate for a new compressor £500+. With nothing to lose i tried connecting the clutch direct to 12vdc, it operated immediately and cold air blown into the car so obvious to me a control problem, is there anything else I can check and where is the a/c control unit located? haynes manual is no help. Also would a/c faults be diagnosed by a dealers diagnostic computer hook up. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you... Read more
There are a couple of other things to be aware of. Air conditioning systems work by compressing a refridgerant gas (R134a), condensing it to a high pressure liquid, then passing it through a valve to reduce the pressure and temperature, and finally evaporating it back to a low pressure gas. The second law of thermodynamics states the heat always seeks out cold areas, and so it's more accurate to say that the A/C system removes heat rather than produces cold. The system must have the correct amount of gas, and this information is usually stated on the front panel of the vehicle. Too much gas will mean the system will operate just as inefficiently as having too little.
There will be a switch on the high pressure line which will switch of the compressor if the pressure gets too high or stays too low. Insuficient gas is usually the problem here, but as you say that is not the problem, but the switch may have failed. Also there will be a temperature sensor on the evaporator (inside the vehicle) will switch off the system if the evaporator gets too cold. The build up of ice could damage the evaporator. The condensor (fitted in front of the radiator) has a cooling fan which must be working for the A/C system to work. The fan will be switched on by a relay. Check the relay and fuses for 12v feed....

Agree with smileyman above. In some areas it effectively makes the wealthy above the law if they choose to be.
