i had a key snap in the ignition of my van and in the end we had to buy a new barrel and key from a vw dealer it fits in fine and it started the van for the last couple of times but then it stopped do you think that it could be the immobiliser on the van or does it sound like something else, can i also remove the immobiliser off my van , i am going to have another look at the van today and see if i can find anything else that maybe causing it not to start now.

i am not that technical minded so need things explaining simply thanks... Read more

Hi all,

My sister has just passed her driving test aged 34 & is due to give birth in a few weeks!! Her hubby has a work car, Volvo estate, and their old motor is a 2002 Golf 1.6 mark 4 which is showing it's age. I might advise her initially to run around in the Golf untill it packs in (it has a few niggles and on a 10 year old car from VW it won't necessarily be worth spending money & hassle trying to repair)... Would the warranty still apply to the second owner of the vehicle?

Yes Hyundai and KIA warrantys are fully transferable free of charge, of course the vehicle should have been (and be) serviced in accordance with the manufacturer's schedule.

Hi everyone

I recently bought a 03 combo van and have noticed the central locking opens the drivers side door but when I pull the handle to open the door it drops slightly and the centrall locking locks again I was wondering if the door drop is causing this or a problem with the locking Read more

I only have one key for my Puma. What happens when the battery dies,,,? Will I get stiffed for having the immobilisor recoded + new keys..? The key itself does not appear to be a master (black). I think it is the RF key that does central locking & immobilisor. Read more

After SWMBO managed at least one ticket (and potentially more depending on post in the next 3-4 days) while trekking up the M11/A14/A1 last week it's time for her to be 'controlled' - current steed is an '04 Honda Stream 2.0 Sport Auto

My W203 Merc has the speed limiter which is dead easy and helps no end in SPECS/roadworks situations or in those places where the speed might creep up. Seem to remember my old Saab 9-3 had an audible warning but this didn't actually limit the speed.... Read more

Buy a Grande Espace and get to know your Renault agents inside out it will spend more time there than it will with you.But still you can look at through the window as the mechanics scratch their heads yet again.

I had a new clutch installed into my 55 reg zafira. A few days and miles later the bolt securing the front offside wheel has disappeared and the wheel parted company. Fortunately I was going very slowly at the time. I am not very technical and before Ispeak to the garage I need to know whether they would have accessed this during the clutch installation, - any ideas? Read more

Changing the clutch on a zafira requires the removal of the front subframe, so yes they would have removed the front wheels and probably a fair chunk of the suspension in order to pull the driveshafts too.

They were certainly the last ones to do the wheel bolts up, so it's their fault and the fact that this problem occurred within days of their work is the "smoking gun" here.

My dash light just went on. It's shaped like a circle with the top and bottom missing. Its located on the right hand side of the panel.

Sounds like a brake warning light.

Check if brake pads are simply worn down or has the "low pad" wiring been disturbed?

Hi,

I recently been told that my gear selector cables are broken and have been quoted 215 for repair. Does this sound about right? How can I check the mechanic is telling the truth?

Thanks Read more

Might be a bit excessive, I'd get another quote.

To check, find where the cables attach to the top of the gearbox. Get someone to change through the gears. You should see both cables moving the levers on top of the box.

My dealer recommends an oil change after the first thousand miles. I think I recollect reading here that such an early oil change is not a good idea but I cannot remember why. Sorry if this is covering old ground. Read more

My 2006 2.5 petrol Outback (lifted Legacy) had a free 1,000 mile service and then annually or 12,000 miles whichever came first.

I certainly subscribe to the theory of letting the factory fill do it's job until the first scheduled service - if Subaru don't currently REQUIRE an oil change at 1,000 miles you're best to leave it until the 12 months or 12,000 miles comes around.

On my 1995 petrol passat (in an attempt to fit a starter button) I mistakenly linked the ignition live with the outer (earth?) of the immobiliser cable which leads down from the ignition switch. the car will fire up but then stops immediately. What bit am I likely to have damaged? As any expert can tell I should never have started but all help will be much appreciated. the idea of the starter button (now not connected) was because the final turn in the key to operate the starter appeared to be getting touch and go. It still works the starter. thanks in advance. Read more

My similar vintage passat needed a new ignition switch. Never thought to install a starter button, though i should have! I got a new switch from GSF for a fiver or so.

I would think that shorting a live to earth would blow a fuse before actually damaging any wiring. ...
