6/7 seats with speed limiter - any suggestions - k3lvc

After SWMBO managed at least one ticket (and potentially more depending on post in the next 3-4 days) while trekking up the M11/A14/A1 last week it's time for her to be 'controlled' - current steed is an '04 Honda Stream 2.0 Sport Auto

My W203 Merc has the speed limiter which is dead easy and helps no end in SPECS/roadworks situations or in those places where the speed might creep up. Seem to remember my old Saab 9-3 had an audible warning but this didn't actually limit the speed.

Any suggestions of a decent 6/7 seater with something similar that'll help keep her licence.

Initial thoughts are to get rid of my Merc and swap for a E320CDi / R320CDi / XC70 / V70 with a sporty little number for me but is there an MPV solution that'll avoid me getting rid of my (Brabussed) Merc ?

Or you could get a £100 satnav that makes annoying noises if you go over 70. Would also make noises if you are approaching a revenue camera.

Indeed - that's the short term plan but with (potentially) sleeping kids in the car doesn't always help

Speeding driver + sleeping kids - sounds a recipe for disaster and grief.

Perhaps the speed awareness course may do some good.

Sorry - what's sleeping kids got to do with disaster and grief ? In my experience it's far better than kids bouncing round the back of the car being distracting.

But don't you think its better not to speed regardless of what the kids are doing.

I'm not pious about speeding (where road conditions are appropriate) but I've got to agree with the above posters. If you need a device to control speed, what is required is a bus pass, not an electronic gizmo. I'm not a fan of any electronic driving aids (auto transmission, cruise control, ABS, ESP etc) because they have the effect of disconnecting the driver from the task of operating the car. This induces laziness and fosters a misplaced sense of invulnerbility.

Any electronically controlled engine could be easily retrofitted with a speed limiter, but what speed do you set? A 56 mph limit isn't going to save you in a 30 zone...

9 points on one's licence usually helps to focus the mind.

Finding a way of limiting another driver's speed is a holy grail that the authorities and many husbands/wives/partners have failed to find almost totally.

I'm one of the few who determinedly try to never exceed ANY speed limit - I fail fairly frequently, it's not easy when you're trying, it's impossible if you or they, aren't trying.

At the risk of sounding arrogant, I prefer to see speed limits as a guide-although I try very hard to obey 30 zones. On a twisty B road I might never get anywhere near the 60 limit, whereas on a clear A road with good visibility, I think 70ish is fine. I don't see the problem with 80+ on a free flowing motorway either. Fixed limits, are like hard rules about always changing gear at exactly X RPM-really quite facile.

My 407 has a speed limiter, though I prefer to use cruise. So to answer the original question have a look at the Peugeot 7 seater, that might have it.

Thanks - first sensible suggestion for me to look at

The Peugeot 5008 does indeed have the potential for 7seats and mine definitely has a speed limiter. I've got the 2.0 hdi exclusive, which is a good engine and has a good ride, comfortable but controlled - I was concerned about body roll in this style of car but this spec has a anti roll jobby fitted. I drove a new Hyundai i30 last week and felt my 5008 is a better ride and the steering felt more direct.

Very good car, I now have 3 kids under 4, and it copes well. Using all 7 seats does give you minimal boot space, but a roof box comes in handy for those occasions ( but the additional height can be an issue!)

I have similar views of the Alhambra that I owned a few years ago when the kids were younger. I never found the lack of luggage space with all seven seats in to be an issue, but its load carrying capacity with only five seats in (and occasionally two!) was immense. One of the best cars I have owned in terms of overall practicality. It had cruise but not a limiter though. It was the SE (top of range at the time) and had stiffer suspension as a result and handled as well as you need a vehicle like that to handle.

The Peugeot 308 also comes in versions which will take 7 seats, with the second and third rows being removable.

On the subject of the kids, i shall repeat my comment from another thread, that they're better off being duck taped and tied up in the boot. Far safer. Screaming children are not condusive to good driving.

Actually if you had ever driven a car with those electronic gadgets what you would realise is that they often help a driver to concentrate on the job in hand...that would be observing the road and driving as opposed to looking out for speed cameras and slippery corners.

The latest Galaxy and S-Max come with a speed limiter as well as cruise control in most models.

And most importantly, a large boot *grins*

If you're looking for a sporty MPV with a speed limiter then you need a renault grand espace initiale. It has all the toys + the speed limiter you want. Although I know the grand scenics now have speed limiters as well, they're just not as fast.

Virtually all Renaults aove base spec now come with cruise control/speed limiter. Very easy to operate and very useful.

Buy a Grande Espace and get to know your Renault agents inside out it will spend more time there than it will with you.But still you can look at through the window as the mechanics scratch their heads yet again.
