Thanks for your comments - Sorry but made a mistake I also had a new clutch along with the starter motor and alternator which cost me Around £500 in total. However I have asked someone else and they also said they didn't think the cams would need changing on my vehicle - so I will certainly query this if I decide to go ahead and replace the head gasket. Do you think £400 is about right for the head gasket or am I being ripped off!!! Still not sure whether to do this work but I just can't send it to the scrap yard - It is a good little runner when all said and done. Read more

I didn't see the previous post but £400 for a head gasket doesn't sound unreasonable in this day and age.

I have been having problems with my car. It runs very nice when i am travelling along. When i pull up at junctions and come to a stop. The engine light comes on. Then when i pull away, i have no power, hardly any revs. I travel a few yards with foot to the floor. The engine light goes off, and the car picks up, as if the turbo kicks in. This is the only time this happens, but happens at every junction. I have had the system tested and they have stated it's the EGR valve. I have replaced the valve and still the same. Now they are saying its the vacum, two little black boxes near the battery. A thin pipe leads to the ERG valve. Has anyone any advise on how i could stop this happening ? Read more

Good evening all,
Already seen some great advice on the site, so here's a trip I'm planning with my wife... and the more I research it the more I'm looking forward to it!

I'm looking into a driving/sightseeing/relaxation holiday to fly into and out of Ljubljana. Of course there's Lake Bled area, the caves toward the south west of Slovenia and I'm also fascinated Dolomites and as part of the round trip, Venice.

So an approx route is Ljubljana to Lake Bled/Bohinj area and then hopefully via some beautiful smaller villages and fantastic scnery, over to Bolzano way. And then I'm sure there's some must-see places between there and Venice, before heading back up to Ljubljana.... Read more

The parents have just sold their Astra as being surplus to requirements and are now wishing to replace their Zafira with something more suitable. N.B. They're not tied to Vauxhalls - that was more of a coincidence than anything.

It needs to be smaller, less bus-like than the Zafira, but bigger than the Astra - in particular able to take a grandchild seat and still be able to comfortably seat two others in the back (like the Zafira did). They recently tried a Primera but found that too big.... Read more

hello all helpful people, i am having a nighmare with our car. i recently bought a golf 1.8 petrol for my girlfriend as she passed her test, was spluttering a bit so i changed all filters and distributer cap and rotor arm. then her dad got involved and noticed carb mount flange was split, so we changed it. however since he did this it wont start! have spoke to a mechanic friend of a friend and he boiled it down to the injector cos it fires up wen petrol dropped in carb.fuel pump and flow fine but injector not firing. so i replaced it, still nothing. he then told me that the injector has no power going to it. can anyone tell me if this is just a fuse or relay or is it more of a problem. thanks Read more

Take the key out of the ignition and put it in your pocket, close the driver's door.
Then...............
Open the rear door and reach to the drivers lock button and press it down.
Close the rear door.
The car is now locked.
Next time you open the drivers door with the key, the alarm will not sound.
Its not a fix,but your neighbours will be a lot happier !
Good Luck.

your help please. in order to pass mot in january 2010 ka needed new steering rack and power pump because i had slid in the ice and hit kerb. this was done at over £1000 andd car passed mot. the mot was done same time 2011 and all ok but within 2 weeks steering felt wrong, i monitored it a few days and took it back to the ford dealership garage that i have always used, their manager said the steering pump had gone again and he commented it was very unusual in such a short time. i only did 4500 miles in that year. he said he would contact ford uk to see if they would help financially, or make a decision. they were far from helpful and would not help in anyway. i have now directed my concerns in writing to the dealership asking for their comments. i have quoted the sale of goods act, saying if the part was faulty and not up to the job a new one should be fitted at their cost. i was left with no choice to pay up and get it done because the garage held onto the car for over a week waiting for decisions from ford uk. what action do you think i need to do next Read more

You say the Manager has said that the fail was premature, and also that for a pump to fail after 12 months was "unusual" so you could be pushing on an open door to get them to pick up all or at least most of the bill.

If you get no joy with that, play the card that you have been a loyal customer for several years, having bought the car from them and paid them to look after it. Ask if loyalty counts for nothing, as next time you need a car, you will remember what he says, and also that you will tell all your friends, relations, colleagues, in fact anyone who will listen to you what his answer to your question is.
