Hi guys.

New to this and know next to nothing so excuse my ignorance!! Having a few probs with my '96 1.4 Golf. Have recently replaced coil pack, HT leads and plugs as was having flat spots and then wouldn't start one day. Is now struggling to start in the cold (sometimes needs a bit more throttle to get going) and is sluggish until warmed up. Am still getting flat spots (although alot less) and seems to be using a bit more fuel than it should (get around 60/65 miles to a tenner). I know the dizzy cap needs doing but as it only has probs in the cold, not sure if this would be the cause?... Read more

It's become apparent to me that fewer and fewer cars seem to be fitted with a handbrake. I wonder why this is the case. :) Read more

Electronic, "automatic" parking brakes (which all seem to work according to different criteria) are part of a larger conspiracy to dumb down all human processes and remove the driver's input from the driving process. A 21st century driver is now utterly pampered in a car where you don't need to change gear, brake in an emergency, maintain a safe distance, observe speed limit signs, keep within your lane markings, check your blind spot, hill start, reverse park, normal park, switch on your wipers or lights or even navigate your way round a new town, as there are machines, screens, beeps, lights and whistles to do it all for you.

There is, however, some fantastically useful technology which complements rather than replaces the driver's intelligence, and amongst these I would include tyre pressure sensors, reminders for seat belts and servicing schedules, bulb failure warnings, the almost ubiquitous "flick once for three flashes" feature on indicators and a few others. If basic cars could include all of these and a few more, then I think we could say that some real progress is being made. The other "extras" I would include are a clear visual warning that dipped beam is ON or OFF and mandatory oil level, coolant and screenwash level reminders....

When you were fined why didn't you pay up?

Life has it's ups and downs and there are problems we all have to solve - Best advice is avoid creating problems that just make life more difficult & pay fines on time and avoid hassle.

After 83 years Autocar has carried out its 5,000th road test – the Buggati Veyron Super Sport. To mark the occasion they have produced a special edition (and priced it accordingly). Various articles include “The history of the road test”, their “50 greatest road tests” and a retest of the first car they tested – an Austin Seven Ruby. I have only thumbed through it so far but it should keep me occupied for many hours.

In some ways I prefer picking up one of their annual road test compilations from the 60s/70s and going through them (must be getting old). But they are getting expensive now .... Read more

I don't know if anything can be done.

A car has been down the side our house for nearly 2 months. The car is taxed but according to MID not insured. It hasn't moved for 2 months and parking is tight as it is. Is there anyway to get the thing moved? Read more

After knocking on a few doors I have found the owner. They are waiting to sell the car but have agreed to move it to a position that isn't so in the way.
