My renault master has developed a continuous voltage drop which I cannot locate. I have totally disconnected the alternator, starter motor and taken out all the fuses but cannot find anything. It is a fair drop of 3 to 4 volts, flattening the battery overnight. I have tried a different battery but it's not that. Totally flumaxed, Any ideas appreciated.

You need an ammeter to find the offending article.

Your description of the voltage drop says it is a huge load as quite a few cars on starting only drop a couple a couple of volts at the battery terminals. Doubt if it really is that much as something would be getting hot....

Hello,

I bought a used car earlier this year from an independent dealer. I have had the car for 3 months and had a knock on the door last Friday night. It was the Police and they wanted to inform me that my car had previously been sold under suspicious circumstances. Apparently an employee of the previous (company) owner sold it without their consent. this has been rumbling on as a Civil matter since November / December last year but now an official compaint has been made to the Police and the CPS have agreed that a criminal offence has taken place.... Principles of Nemo Dat apply. The basic rule is that a person cannot pass to another property he does not own.

The car goes back to the last owner with good title. (Rowland v Divall where plaintiff bought a car from the defendant who was not the owner. Held Rightful owner could recover car.)

You have a civil claim against the dealer and then it goes back up the chain. The exception is if there had been HP on the car in which you would have developed good title if you could show you were an "innocent purchaser".

I see you have emailed me and will answer in more detail there.

I recently got an espace 1.9d 2003 in January. It has a stop start button in it. All was fine until the other day when it wouldn't start. The only way it would start is with my foot on the brake.

I have never had to do this in the last 2 months I've had the car but now this is the only way it starts.... Read more

I suggest that you get the "card reader" ( the device that you insert the key card into) checked out as it may well have gone wrong. Is the battery good in your key card BTW?

Hi all, Doing some home repairs on the car, changed the head gasket, and the car won't start afterwards. The starter motor does not crank when I turn the key and no fuel is getting to the injectors.

So, to cover the other stuff... I've checked the timing, I've made sure fuel is getting to the pump, I've run a wire from the starter solenoid to the battery and the engine turns over but does not start, I've opened the fuel injector pipes to let air out of the system, so far nothing. I even looked for the fuel cut-off switch mentioned on petrol cars but there isn't one.... Read more

I think you are probably correct in your assumption, if the supply to the starter solonoid is not present its quite likely that the fuel solonoid is not being activated either. As you say the solonid connection is buried in the pump for security reasons and I think there is actually a chip inside the armouring.

If you can find the common feed and connect it permantly to 12 volts that should overcome the problem, if not I can only suggest that you fit an earlier type pump that has an exposed solonoid.

Last weekend was our daughters 16th .My wife bought her a sealed pack of SD cards for her digital camera from a supermarket.

Last night I transferred all the photos she had taken onto our computer. The first half dozen photos were of scenery in a mountain range , not professionally taken, and a shot of a person in the last picture. How can this be, seeing as the cards came in a sealed pack. Any ideas how these got on the SD card and has anyone else experienced the same thing? Read more

Just noticed on the front of the site there is a quesiton about a NMR (National Mileage Regsiter) and WeBuyAnyCar telling a seller their car is effectively clocked.

HJ's answer isn't quite correct in my view on this. The NMR does not in fact usually record MOT mileages. It records keeper changes where the mileage is entered on the V5, servicing mileages from some manufacturers, some information from leasing companies, finance houses etc., results of it's own investigations and most importantly the mileages entered when a NMR check is done.... I totally agree that NMR is not the most reliable way of checking a car's mileage. Out of 3 cars bought at a large auction with warranted mileage, 2 of them came up with a mileage discrepancy. When I contacted NMR they required a lot of proof, a copy of the service book and all old MoTs and even then they never removed the discrepancy which was obviously a mistake! All the mileages tallied but when the car was 18 months old 334,000 was entered instead of 33,400! I was surprised they even asked for evidence as I thought common sense would have prevailed! Besides the fact the other mileages tallied, how many cars cover 334,000 miles in 18 months!

If anything NMR can be a complete pain as it can make a genuine mileage car appear dubious - to be be fair if a car buyer runs a check and a 'Mileage Discrepancy' red alert comes up he or she is more likely to run a mile than assume its a data input error. It is not practical to NMR check every car you fancy at auction but out of 3 I bought in the last 5 years 2 have come up with incorrect discrepancies.
