The gear linkage on her car has started squeaking, sounds like it is just under the gear lever gaiter.

How do I get in to lubricate it? Read more

That takes half a day and time is short.

My Wife's 1.0 Polo ('93) has developed a droning noise from the front left wheel that is only apparent above 30mph. I suspect it's the bearing, but I wanted a bit of advice before I tackle it. I can't say for certain if it's the wheel bearing or the inner (gearbox) bearing, or indeed a CV joint. It doesn't clunk on full lock, so I'm guessing that rules out the CV joint.

Are these a nightmare to swap out ? I was planning on stripping it down and taking the hub to a local engineering works to get them to press out / press in the bearing ona hydraulic press as I don't fancy half a day's frustrated bashing with a hammer :-)... Read more

Very much doubt it is a gearbox bearing and what you describe is a wheel bearing. Some garages have a special to type hydraulic bearing puller and the strut does not need to be removed. Check for a local VW/Audi independant. Regards Peter

i have just bought a peugeot 306 hdi, after having it about a month the engine manegment light came on and the car cut out, i thought it was the diesel because it was very low so i put some in and it still would not start, i had it put on a diagnostic computer and the code was po230 fuel pump primery curcuit, he cleared the code and the car run for about 1 hour so i was told to change the fuel pump relay which made no differance at all so i tryed a fuel pump (the one in the tank) but still no joy, now the car will only start for about five seconds before it cuts out but some times it will tick over for a while but when i try to rev it it cuts out and plus it would only rev to 2500 rpm and when i switch it off with the key it over runs for about 4 second. i hope some one can help as i dont know what to do next. thanks

I have a diesel leak from the throttle shaft on the fuel pump under the bonnet (partner van 1997), in one of the forums the advice given was to change the top cover. Is this easy to do or will I have to get my wallet out?

Thanks in advance Read more

A cousin of mine phoned me yesterday to see if I could find out if the broken off end of his dipstick, apparently lying in the oil sump, would do any damage.

The car is a 2.8l Granada built in 1985. He thinks its a Mk 11. Could anyone advise, please?... Read more

I'm reminded that I once dropped a exhaust valve stem cotter down an oilway whilst doing a head job on my P4 Rover 90 (side exhaust valves on these)

As it turned out to be impossible to obtain a replacement I was obliged to drop the sump & fish for it making it one of those mistakes which you never ever repeat....

I have a cocrete garage floor that has worn quite badly and it has been sugested to use an asphalt covering to level floor and provide a dust free surface.

Has anyone experience of using an asphalt floor particularly in their garage, it is a hard surface, not the type used on the roads. Read more
