Anyone got any ideas what could be causing a metallic squeal from the rear of the engine around the valve cover area. Does not do it on tickover, only when accelerating fairly hard but goes away when in 4th gear at 30mph. Will not come back unless I sit in heavy stop start traffic. Plenty of lubrication on camshaft, air blown through oil passages and clear. Turbo swapped but still the same, engine flushed to be on safe side - no change. Read more

hey my father in law has just got a new car, ford escort 1.6 finesse. he picked the motor up drove 3 miles downt he road and it just cut out, called rac to help they said it could be something to do with having a blockage in the catolic converter/exhaust, after the rac man left he noticed a sticker on the visor saying it had a fuel cut off switch so he found that and pushed it. now it is starting but wont run he has felt the exhauset for cold spots n nothing it all hot, checked the lambda sensor, cleaner sark plusgs but cannot think off anything due to not really much about motors.

My 1600cc C Max makes what only can be described as a "chattering " noise from the alternator area when the heated windscreens are switched on. The local ford dealer says it is the drive belt that needs changing at a cost of £90 and the belt is not subject to warranty. The car has done less than 25k and is just 2 years old. Has anyone had this problem? If the belt is defective why is it not covered by warranty or could this be a problem with the alternator.Thank you in anticipation. Read more

My 06 C Max did the same on a cold start. I had bought it used from a Ford dealer, and returned it under the warranty, but they couldn't seem to get it to re-produce... However, they did diagnose a faulty alternator and replaced that, which I presume meant a new belt. It stil chattered.

Spraying a thin coat of silicone spray on the back (flat side) of the belt, with the engine running, had the desired effect for a few weeks at a time.

does anybody know if a slight creaking noise coming from the front end when for instance i put nearly full right hand lock when going one wheel up a drop down kerb is anything to worry about its only a slight creaking noise and last for a second or so. ive also heard it a couple of times when going very slowly over speed humps. my auris past a mot test yesterday at a toyota dealer with no problems at all the dealer couldnt get the noise to replecate itself when taken on a short test drive and didnt seem concerned. all the tech said was " even lexus' make a creaking noise when on full lock. the car has hardly been over speed humps in its entire life, so i dont think these have anything to do with it ? Be grateful for any help. About to but a car for my wife to run around in - she will probably do about 10000 miles a year and use it mostly for ferrying our 2 grandchildren around. Have a bit of a quandry - she really likes the new shape Fiesta and the Mini Cooper and can't make up her mind which one to go with - she has driven both and lkes them both !!! Most of the reviews I have read don't really favour one or the other except for the residual value of the Mini. Anyone out there got an opinion? Thanks. Read more

MY wife had the same problem. She had driven the MINI and liked it.

After a test drive in the MK7 Fiesta Zetec it was no contest....

Right got a problem with driver door light (Bottom right) staying on even when door is closed and locked, I'm not sure if these are connected but the central locking system doesn't seem to be working properly either, using the key fob have no problems with opening the car but can't lock it, have to use the key manually.

But when my partner started messing around with the door latch he seemed to knock the U shaped piece back into the door (Where it got stuck for some time so we couldn't close the door at all!) the light turned off. After pulling the interior door handle and the latch re-jigged itself back into place (As if the door was locked) the light came back on.... Read more

Just done a journey of about two hundred miles, parked the car then went to move it about two hours later. On turning the key to prestart position there was a click from the relay/ fuse box under the glovebox, followed by a kind of rushing sound, lasting a second or two from underneath the car in the region of the fuel tank. Never noticed this noise before, and until today the car has always started without making that particular sound. I assume its the fuel pump, but I dont know why its suddenly started doing this. I had a Meriva with a fuel pump that buzzed on start up , but this sounds different.

Car still starts fine--should I be concerned at this new sound?... Read more

Cheers for that. I only notice the abovementioned noise after a longish trip, and driving around town there's no obviously unusual sound from the fuel system at all.

But I'll take your tip and keep a spare fuse on board.
