Hi, I have got a 55plate 2006 model Focus Titanium with the Ti-vct 1.6 petrol engine, it has done 86,000 miles, fully serviced by main dealers. The car has a very dignified knocking noise when the engine is cold and you can still hear the noise when the engine is warm. Various people have told me it is one of the Hydraulic Lifters? If i was to put Hydraulic lifter fluid into the engine, which i have been recommended to do by a mechanic, would this do the car any harm even if it didnt drown out the knocking sound? How much would it be to get the lifters repaired? any rough ideas? email me Jonathan_affa@hotmail.co.uk Thanks, Jay!

I took my car in to our usual garage on monday with a clutch issue. I called for an update on the Tuesday of which I was informed the parts would be in that afternoon. As the parts had already been ordered I also asked for a rough idea of price. No idea or rough estimate was given.

Wednesday, I popped in of which this time I was informed the parts would be with them that afternoon. Again asked for a rough idea of price. They said call tomorrow morning (being today, Thursday).

Called garage this morning of which told will be doing the works this afternoon. Had a call around 5pm saying the car is nearly ready but will be finished in the morning. Asked again about idea of price and lo-and-behold....£400 + VAT. Now, if they told me when I first asked for a rough cost I wouldn't have authorised the works. Even if they only gave me the price of the parts.

The car is a 53 plate Ford Fusion with 195,000 miles on the clock. We had a small ding last year so the bumper is broken and made good. I reckon it's only worth about £1200.

My wife called them back and they said they were under the impression we needed the car fixed regardless. Yes, we do need the car but at £480 I feel they should have checked this before carrying on with the works, we're not made of money and I would have looked at other options. With the value of the car and the works carried out we could have got a newer vehicle...with at least half the mileage!!!

Where do we stand and what can I do? Read more

its really annoying when this happens, i assume they fitted a complete new clutch which i know is expensive. you should go and see the manager and explain what happened and make him aware of how many times you asked what it would cost, if they are a reputable establishment he should try and help, at least by giving you the parts at the price they actually paid and not the retail price, they normally mark up the parts at 25% more at least. and dont let him give you that old baloney about having to send a man and vehicle to get them ! all parts are delivered to the garage free of charge !!! good luck

Hello peoplel I am a fully qualified mechanic, I am now looking to start my own workshop. It will be something small like a single two post ramp. Any advice on how to start and what's involved is much appreciated. Read more

Hi oqey, are you looking for specific advice on just workshop related issues or more general advice on running a small business such as a workshop? I have some experience of the latter and none of the former.

Hi everyone,

I have a focus mk1 tdci 115hp which went into limp mode with the glow plug light flashing, the code reader stated no4 cylinder above knock sensor threshhold. On removal of no4 injector the tip was found wet with fuel and later tested and found to be faulty. After fitting a new injector the engine started, knocked badly and belched fuel i.e the same fault as before. After removeing all the injectors numbers 1 and 2 were wet with fuel and 3 and 4 were dry. Has anyone any ideas on this? as all the injectors have been tested and found to be ok. Read more

Since having a replacement engine fitted to my Galaxy,I have had no power in accelleration from the turbo. It's as if the car is running without a turbo on it.
I've took it to a Diagnostic who ran a full report on the car.It came back with fault code 17965 charge pressure control positive deviation.
The MAF sensor has been checked, the Inlet Temperature Sensor has been checked. The turbo itself has been changed. The EGR valve has been checked. The hoses are fine.
I don't know where to go with this now.My Diagnostic suggested getting a Auto Electrician to check out the stretch of cable that goes from the Temperature Sensor to the ECU be checked for breaks or damage to the cable.
Anyone got any suggestions or past experiences with this problem please.I'm fast running out of money, patience and the will to live!!!! Read more

Despite several phone calls and emails to the dealership concerned (they claim to be the largest in the UK), I have not received the MOT or new keeper slip for the used vehicle we purchased from them 3 weeks ago.

My concern is that with the road fund licence being due at the end of this month, I shall not be in possession of the documentation required to renew it.... Read more

Hi, I'm doing a decoke on my wife's car which has a 1.4 16v (K4j) DOHC in it. I've been told that the Hydraulic tappets have to be bled. Could someone enlighten me on how to do this please? Also, when I took the cam cover off, two of the (torx) head bolts were rounded off. I managed to drill the tops off these bolts (Eventually). Do I have to replace all the head bolts or is single replacement of the head bolts acceptable? Thanks on anticipation. All the best Steve Read more

Again like the other gent, I dont know Renault engines, but generally to 'bleed' hydraulic tappets. They are usually just telescopic and held together with a spring steel cap.

Just pop this cap/collar off pull the tappet apart and empty out the oil....
