The model I'm looking at for the moment is the E-Class spec of... Read more
Our Galaxy has been chugging at low revs, mostly when gently accelerating away from a standstill, for a number of months. Recently, while under heavy acceleration, the MAF seemed to trip out and put us into limp mode but we did notice that the chugging stopped. We stopped the car and restarted the engine and the power was back but so was the chugging! We have since tried unplugged the MAF and the chugging stopped but the engine had very little power.
Does the fact that the chugging stopped when the MAF was unplugged mean that the problem is 100% definitely caused by a faulty MAF? We really can't afford to get into a situation opf swapping out part after part until we find the culprit.... Read more
Assuming you don't have access to VAG-COM, a faulty or failing MAF is normally diagnosed by disconnecting it but the performance should improve not worsen.
Hi
I am posting this for a friend who sells vehicles and is a registred trader. He sold a MGF convertible a few weeks ago to a private buyer and now has a problem.... Read more
The point I was making is that a general warning that these vehicles *can* suffer from head gasket problems would probably not be enough.
There would have to be a specific warning that "this vehicle requires a new head gasket" so it can be factored into the price.
The only other potential get-out is if the court accepts it was sold at a "trade" price.
With a breakdown two weeks after sale the court is likely to accept that the fault was there at the time the car was sold and unless the car was exceptionally cheap the remedy is repair at the cost of the dealer or replacement.
Failing that a refund if repairing it is uneconomic.
At first service mentioned fault that no green symbol for Dipped Beam appeared although the blue Main Beam light was working.
I was told that this was deliberate but first car that I've driven to not have a Dipped Beam display and it is in the handbook though it covers umpteen variants.... Read more
Re Peter D
Thanks Peter. Just shows how out of date I am.
Hi all,
I have just changed the timing belt and tensioners on a Vauxhall Corsa 1.5TD 1996 model. It has now picked up a whine when revved up and a "rumbling" noise at idle.... Read more
Can't really tell from the video because I don't know what the engine sounded like before but an over tight belt is certainly a strong possibility, the tightness is not as critical as is often suggested as the belt stretches and wears with age anyway, I would just be inclined to slacken it off a little and try, obviously it shouldn't be loose but there are degrees of tightness.
This is a note to all drivers of 10 reg Astras. I have been behind a few at lights and junctions and have noticed the brake lights flickering. It only seems to be 10 reg models.
I assume its a faulty switch, so just to let anyone who drives one to check your lights as they will be under warranty and most drivers would never otherwise notice. Read more
Interesting observation.Vauxhall do have a problem with the brake switch on these late model astras.(may even be subject of a recall). The brake switch is not in fact a switch as we know it,it is a variable position switch(potentiometer)and signals various electronic modules on the car.hth

The whole episode is tragic and my thoughts go out to those left behind who have lost people in the devastation and that the rescue operation can find the few that are in need of help.
Having watched SKY news almost continually from Friday to get updates on the disaster, there have been comparison images of before and after showing many villages that were swept away. Knowing that these villages were on the Pacific rim of fire, and prone to earthquakes and tsunamis from the Pacific, why were so many buildings on this coastline made of wood and not solidly built with concrete or brick. The debris consists, predominantly,of wood debris. The ones left standing appeared to be solidly built.... Read more
