Ford Focus Titanium 1.6 55plate,2006 - Tapping Noises - JOFFY

Hi, I have got a 55plate 2006 model Focus Titanium with the Ti-vct 1.6 petrol engine, it has done 86,000 miles, fully serviced by main dealers. The car has a very dignified knocking noise when the engine is cold and you can still hear the noise when the engine is warm. Various people have told me it is one of the Hydraulic Lifters? If i was to put Hydraulic lifter fluid into the engine, which i have been recommended to do by a mechanic, would this do the car any harm even if it didnt drown out the knocking sound?
