Japan - effect on car market - daveyK_UK

First off,

its a terrible shock what has happened in Japan and my thoughts and prayers are with the people of Japan.

How will this terrible disaster effect the new car supply?

What Japanese cars (built in Japan) do they sell in the UK?

Will this disaster effect the supply of parts?

Hundreds, possibly thousands, dead.

Tens of thousands missing and homeless.

Possible nuclear power station leak.

And you are wondering about the supply of parts?????

Perfectly reasonable question.

Knowing the Japanese reputation for efficiency, probably not. Normal service resumed soon.

I see Mr. Obama has promised to help Japan in any way possible.

Best get N'Orleans fixed first, eh?

Wouldn't have thought very much - the Japanese will be as keen as anyone to get going again. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see this disaster as the catalyst to a great boom in the Japanese economy - all that re-building to do & I'm sure the Japanese habit of being very conversative in their spending habits will alter somewhat after this.

AFAIK also, the main areas for production & shipping are fairly unaffected (given the nuclear plant problems don't escalate..).

From the rather 'PC' response from one poster - contrary to us all moping about & feeling sorry for them (which is of no practical help really) the best thing you could do to 'help' is to buy their products & be interested in the availabilty thereof!

Just likewhat happened after the Marshall plan in Germany after WW2...

During my Merchant Navy days I used to visit all the Japanese Nuclear plants including Fukushima 1 and 2.The ship and crew were always treated with great respect and courtesy,so its very sad personaly to see the state Japan is in at the moment.

But knowing the Japanese as well as I do I am quite certain that they will pick themselves up and get the country back on its feet PDQ.

From the Telegraph:

"Japan's major automakers are desperately trying to find alternative parts suppliers to replace those knocked out of action by the colossal earthquake last week that has forced most of the country's car production to a halt.

Honda warned U.S dealers that it feared it won't be able to resume full production at certain Japanese plants before May, according to a memo sent by the automaker."
