Having just smugly sailed past an ANPR van it occurred to me to check my MOT renewal date.
It's lapsed by a few days. Is MOT data also used by them?

As I am currently selling my Accord, and it is advertised in Autotrader I have been expecting the usual calls from canvassers who have "clients waiting to buy a car just like mine". A few years ago I would have got wound up by these calls but now I just play along :o)
In the last 10 minutes I have just had a new twist on them though - mobile goes, check number, it's a London number so I'm already fairly confident it is from a canvasser. Sure enough a young girl on the other end asks if my Honda is for sale, then checks it is the same spec as mentioned in the ad. he then goes through all the speel about confirming reg etc for HPI check as their buyers are pre-approved and credit checked etc. etc. etc.
I let her continue on sounding very interested ;o) Then she gets to the new bit (to me anyway), there is an £89 fee for registration of the warranty they supply to their buyers, so in effect they are no longer charging you an advert fee but a fee for a warranty!!!!
I then said that sounded like a superb deal and how would they like to pay me the £89, I could accept paypal, bank transfer, cheque or cash - this seem to be lost on her and it took her about 2 minutes of trying to explain to me that it was me who was meant to pay them before the penny finally dropped that I was winding her up ;o) Then she just hung up on me ;o)
I have to admit it was quite an amusing way of spending 7 minutes, and at least 7minutes spent with me meant 7 minutes less she could spend with someone who is gullible enough to believe there carp. But the warranty angle seems a new twist on an old theme!!! Read more

Hi can anyone help me my car keeps stalling from cold unless you keep it reved up. the car will continue to stall untill the engine has gotten warm i.e 10 mins driving.
i got the car in april 07 and from the end of may 07 has done this.
i have had changed the following parts:
coolant temp sensor- technical data for the car says this is a common fualt however no change once new on fitted only sensor was chnaged not wiring and it was an aftermarket sensor. Should i try genuine sensor and a wiring kit???
Secondhand (but known to be free from faults) fuel temp sensor in high pressure fuel pump - the reason for this is that autodata diagnostic equipment shows the fuel temp reading to be -34 degrees. how ever no change made
the car runs fine once warm
obviously this problem is fuel related but not sure what to do next.
i want to sell the car as i have now done 10k miles since having it but cant sell it if it stalls.
please can someone help
thanks Read more

Hi
I have noticed my temperature light flashing - sometimes when the engine is started (but if I switch and re-start it stops flashing ) and today, it started to flash after i had been driving for about 10 mins. Not sure what it is and everything else sounds and feels normal. Can anyone help?
My car is a 1.4, 1999 model. {Which SHOULD have been included in the subject header, as per the 2 sticky requests, and a further request under the subject header when you composed this question!}

I'm sure if the headgasket goes due to overheating, it will be VW's fault!! Simple checks like coolant, oil and brake fluid should be done weekly. I think your car will have all colour coded bits (usually yellow) that need weekly checks so are easily identifiable..
E-sure insures my 2 x cars + house & contents
Renewal comes in @ £180 comp for the Mazda Xedos (Gp 16 car) that I have owned since almost new in 1999.
Just nipped into TescoCompare website - Cheapest E-sure - same cover £40 less.
The inmates seem to be running the "Premium Calculations"
New customer off the street gets 18% less than an existing customer of 6 years (I was one of their 1st motor policy holders) - the renewal said NCB Discount 70% + 5% for being with them claim free for 6 years.

Well I'm with E-sure and I've got a Tesco card, so I'll give it a go; thanks!
Hi Folks - Sorry if this is a long one but i am a newbie at all of this..
I have a real problem with be 1999 E39 BMW M5 5.0 V8 which apparently the local dealership cannot resolve so I wonder if someone out there may be able to shed some light on the problem. I am currently at my wits end and well out of pocket.
Unfortunately live in Spain and bought a LHD E39 M5 about 4 years ago. It is has full BMW history and has wanted for nothing. Last year the car started randomly losing power - when you put your foot down on the accelerator it will not rev past 2000rpm but if you let go of the throttle and put your foot down again it is fine for a few seconds the goes back to 2000rpm.
The car does not seem to misfire at all but will not rev. It starts fine and idles fine and then all of a sudden it will be all ok again for a random period of time.
I took it to my local BMW dealer who has had the car since last August!!!!(I have had it returned to me several times with the fault still occurring)!! They say there is nothing showing on the diagnostic machine or in the history?
They have changed
Both air flow sensors
All the spark modules (spark leads)
All spark plugs
Some form of ´rev´sensor (situated near clutch housing)
Currently the total cost stands at about £2500...
The fault still occurs and now they want to replace sensors on the clutch assembly, the clutch whilst it?s out and also an ECU. This is another total cost of £2500 - however they cannot guarantee this will work...and I don?t want to spend this money unless they can guarantee this will be the resolve. As you can appreciate I don?t want to waste any more money...
No one at BMW has ever encountered anything like this and I feel that they have lost all interest...BMW (Spain) also refuse to contact M division in Germany which I find a bit strange?
I am desperate to find any answer; I love the car but have lost all faith in my local dealership. Is there anyone who has had anything like this before? Is there anything anyone can suggest....As currently I have spent a lot of money on a car that will not move.
Yours in desperation
Big-Al

Hi Big-Al. I have e39 with 2,5 engine. I have very similar problem with my car (this problem is still there). Sometimes the engine goes into emergency mode and revs no more than 2000 rpm. This is because of the electronic throttle. I don't know what exatly it is (posibly the throttle position sensor near the throttle body) but when the engine goes into emergency mode the throttle valve starts to go up and down about three times per sec. When I hit the throttle pedal, the valve stops going crazy but it won't open and the engine revs are dropping down till 300 rpm. To fix the problem temporarily I rap few times a throttle body with a metal screw driver and the problem goes away for a few weeks. The guy from BMW dealer told me that this is very common problem of most BMW and any car's that is fitted with electronic throttle. This part worns after 10-12 years of exploitation and has to be replaced. I hope it will help. Good luck!!!
By the way you didn't mention about the error on the dash display. Is there any?
Anyone else get the feeling that the whole thing is a hoax? The messages which seem to come on a regular basis, keep talking about the "current" cameras and that in a about a weeks time will go live with lower settings. Well as of this morning there are a total of zero cameras between J12 and J15 and I can't see how they intend to install, test and activate these new installations in that timeframe.
Is it possibile that the powers that be are just waging a misinformation campaign to persuade the majority of drivers to slow down, without actually having to do anything at all? Read more
It is a shame HJ locked his thread

as I would have commented there otherwise to ask him if he had any
belivable source for his story.
Nothing to stop you asking in the original posting.

ps, HJ didn't lock it, I did to prevent repetition of a discussion that had already occured, but forgot to add the link pointing to the discussion already started elsewhere so that any comments could be added.

I have a rover coupe 216 1600i sohc honda engine. Its been pretty good till the cam belt went, but its a non-interference engine so i've fitted a new timing belt, i rotated the engine and double checked it was set up fine ran it, then put it back together, but now everything is back together its gutless and doesn't accelerate that quick. I noticed that last time it was changed they painted marks on the pulleys im wondering if they had mucked it up and changed the ignition timing to make it run? how can i check if this is the case??? cos if poss i don't want to take everything apart again if its not that, could it be something else i did jack the engine up to get the mounting off is there something i could have dislodged??? Hi I have a similar problem 1993 Rover 416 Honda 16 valve SOHC. My daughter fried the head gasket and I had to have a strip down and the lucky that the head was flat and not distorted however the timing mark (plastic bit ) on the inside top timing cover is bent due to the overheating !. I got it back together and timed it by using the lines on the cam sprocket aligned with the surface of the head where the rocker cover fits.
But now it runs poor and stalls as soon as i try to accelerate. I am absolutely sure everything else is now ok except the timing belt.
I since double checked about aligning the cam with the lines on the cam sprocket ( with the "up" mark at 12 o clock ) and found this is recomended for the DOHC. The SOHC says to use the plastic mark - which I cant now rely on .. is there a way of aligning the cam shaft ? say by somthing as solid as a metal surface / refference like on the twin cam.
If the valves are a tooth out can I leave it and reset the spark timing ? will it damage the engine if I can do that ?
PS although the timing can be adjusted at the distributor there is a wire link to fit near the washer bottle that overides the auto advance and you must put that in when stobe timing, although I can hardly see the marks on mine with a stobe.
Any ideas welcome.
I'm just in the process of replacing one Honda Civic with another. The deal I'm being offered includes the small matter of £360 for a 'platinum' 12 month warranty with breakdown cover.
It's not a deal-breaker, but it seems on the hefty side to me, and I'm concerned about potential get-out clauses.
I doubt the car will do the dirty on me anyway, but those are famous last words.
What do people think - is it a fair deal, and who's best for solid, honest cover? Read more
many thanks jbif
all is now clear
Here is an MOT reminder service which will also book your MOT free of charge. The MOT will need to be paid for though!
