Hi, this is my first post, so hello everyone. I am looking for an opinion on the following.
I'm considering selling my Golf VR6 car after about 6-7 years of ownership. There are two electric windows (drivers side) not working, and both immobiliser keys are patched up with wire and cardboard and although these work they look a bit heath Robinson. Is it worth getting these niggles sorted out beforehand, or sell it as it is from a monetary point of view?
I suppose this could be a more general question of does the extra resale value of an older second hand car justify the cost of repair of non essentials? Read more

Just reality. Sadly.
I don't about where you live, but all the "Rounabout Ahead- give way" signs where I live (South East London) have been removed. Given all the new drivers, and immigrants, of which we have many, need a sign to follow and there aren't any, they just pull out on you, not even slowing down to check for other road users. Had a couple of close calls recently. Why have the signs been removed? It's still in the Highway Code. Read more

entry "Cedez la droite". Made life more interesting looking for the sign or lack thereof.

There is only one roundabout in Ottawa, and they use this system as I found out last year, nearly at the cost of my front end!
Might have known that the French-Canadians would influence that!
Help, The drivers window on my Mazda 6 will not rest at the top, it bounces back down to halfway, any ideas? Read more
Thanks all, for the help, the battery hasn't been changed recently, however on further investigation yesterday i noticed that if you gently hold/pull the switch upwards its fine, it seems as if there is two stages to the switch, with the 2nd stage being the auto up bit, however looking at the handbook now (which i should have done before posting!) it may need resetting. Thanks again.
Hi, just wondering if anyone has had this problem with their car, we have a citreon c3 1.4diesel exclusive, on a 52 reg.
The problem is the car wont start unless you prime some kind of pump by the side of the engine, once this is carried out for a few mins the car will start and run all day. If the car is left sometimes it can be a day or two the same problem happens again..
Any answers would be appreciated. Read more

The 'paperclip' method did appear in the workshop manual as the alternative solution if no resetting pc/software was available.
Details can be found at:

just add the www. back.
Alternatively the resetting units come up on ebay regularly for circa £30.

We purchased a new Volvo V70 D5 Estate car in October 2007. 3 weeks ago we experienced a strong burning rubber smell coming from the rear of the car probably from the exhaust. We have had 2 similar experiences since then. The agents could not identify what is causing this intermittent fault, but advised that they had had one other similar experience that probably came from the particulate filter in the exhaust. Any other advice would be gratfully received.

Falkirk Bairn Many thanks for info. HJ considers the problem to be a burn cycle for the particulate filter, but any other info would be most welcome
My daughter has recently bought a Peugeot 306. (She lives quite a distance away so I've not seen the car yet). When I mentioned the potential problem of the spare wheel being stolen on this model she told me it wasn't a problem as there was a sticker on the back saying it had a lock fitted. She wasn't sure how this worked and neither am I. Can anyone please tell me how they do work so I can pass it on.
Thanks

The lock manufacturer supplies instructions that it recommends are put in the driver's manual.
I have very recently had a system called omni dream? installed.
My query is, whilst driving on gas the gas symbol is lit. but my petrol gauge is showing petrol consumption. low petrol light is on.
I have used 3 gallons of petrol in 7 days, trip showing 72 miles.
I can hear the changeover occur.
Are my expectations too high, I was anticipating using very little fuel or is there a problem?
My vehicle has less than 500 miles on the clock.

Well that sort of narrows down how old it is. Now how about giving a clue as to the engine details ----> points towards the sticky requests, and ignored message under the subject header asking for these when you composed your question ;o)
We went to visit some friends today, on the A29 outside Pulborough there was one of these time trial/road races going on.
Should they really be allowed to use the public highway? The road was not particularly suited to it, lots of solid white lines and quite hilly and twisty - basically an accident waiting to happen - it struck me that with more and more traffic now on the roads (even on a Sunday morning) such races should not really be allowed. Well, when I am out on my bike; either on my daily cycle to work or one of the 3 or 4 charity rides i do each year I am financially subsidising all the car drivers, good and bad, that I encounter on my way.
Because, like the vast majority of cyclists you'll encounter I'm paying income tax, council tax, national insurance, VAT... and for those who think a VED disc grants full ownership of the roads, I have a fully taxed, insured, MOT'd, petrol consuming car sitting on my drive not using any of the roads I have paid to use it on.
Why are cyclists allowed to race on the roads..? Because the law says they can. And when races require road closures the organisers will have paid a significant amount of money for policing and administering the event. Should the London Marathon, Great North run etc be illegal too? Do you want the marathon banned from the 2012 Olympics?
And cycle lanes... can't comment on the specific one mentioned but they are often built in the wrong places and for the wrong reasons (eg quota box ticking) and are consequently unsuitable. There's one i could use on my route, it's seperate from the road but on the wrong side for my ride in - and it requires cyclists to stop and give way at every side street - 3 times within 200 Metres - and then it just stops - leaving cyclists facing the wrong way up a dual carriageway. To continue my journey I'd have to cross back over 4 lanes of traffic. So, guess what..? I cycle up the 4 lane road, usually travelling faster than the cars. (damn just seen the link posted above to an even more ridiculous example of stop start cycle lane!)
For £2500 You need to have the car in very good order. Check recent completed Ebay sales for real-world prices.
