February 2008
Hi,
Can someone please help, I have a saxo 2000 1.1 and ever since I got it its been idling oddly, almost spluttering below 1000 revs. But now, I got back from holiday and all of sudden my engine system management light has come on and switches between flashing and just being on all the time. The car seems to bunny hop when I get to between 1000 and 2000 revs while driving and just doesnt seem happy. I have seen in other posts people suggested cleaning the coilpack and checking the spark plugs, but I have tried looking under the bonet and cant see where either of these would be. Please can someone direct me to the right place so I can have a look and try and fix it myself as I cant afford a mechanic and desperately need my car.
Also, is it dangerous or bad for my engine to drive the car the way it is for now if I cant fix it and cant raise the money for a mechanic to fix it?
Thanks

The Mail on Sunday's Live magazine did a review about three months ago of some of the world's most expensive turntables that made a Linn, even today, seem cheap.
Top price was well into five figures...:-)
I had my car services today at a Seat main dealer. It is a two year old Seat Altea 1.9TDi Reference Sport. I am not convinced the garage has done much at all as they had it for not much longer than an hour.
I popped the bonnet and had a cursory look at the oil on the dip stick. It is black, thin and dirty so I took it back to the garage to discuss. They said because it is a diesel the engine retains a large amount of dirt and as soon as the new oil circulates it picks up the remnants and changes to black. Sounds a bit dubious to me but he stood his ground. Is he correct? Read more
Funny enough I service our Altea at the weekend ...I do it myself but use VW parts total cost fuel, oil air filter and 5 ltrs of PD oil £60 total time about 1 hour.
Funny thing though this is the first car that felt like it hadn't been serviced if you know what I mean .... most cars feal I whole lot better after a service this one yes it a tad quieter a tad quicker but not that big differenece that the old style TDi's had if serviced.
hey. Got a bit of an electric problem... well here goes -

Hi,
I've got a Mk1.5 TDci Ghia - 54 reg with 25k on the clock.
Its suddenly started (actually its more likely me thats only just noticed) to develop a creaking from the front @ low speeds - I've not been able to pin it down any further - but from the drivers seat it seems to me like the O/S area.
Does anyone have any ideas.

Thanks - is whats called a "drop link"?
My gf's 98 fiat punto has suddenly decided it doesnt want the seat belt to be unwound so it can be worn. It simply behaves as if you are pulling on it too hard and just wont move (no we're not pulling on it too hard! :P).
Is there any handy tricks that can be done to unjam it - have already tried keeping the belt 100% vertical and pulling very slowly. It wont even "take in" the slack of the belt that has been unwound.
If i cant sort it i'll have to faff about down at the breakers and replace it.
Any advice welcome.
Thanks,
Matt. Read more
Actually I managed to sort this myself, it simply took a fair amount of brute force for anyone with similar problem.
I did try to take the paneling of but was struggling with that so gave a last ditch attempt of forcing it out and managed to free it.
Now the parking lights have decided to go!!
Had a bit of a moment yesterday, you know one of these very small things that seems to break the camels back.
For the countless millionth time i have held back at a junction to allow someone to drive across in front of me, and not hold them up, only to be totally ignored by the young driver (isnt it invariably) who would have had to wait for at least a light change before doing so otherwise, no he wasnt in a German car either.
I dont want anyone congratulating me on roadcraft or anything silly before the sarcastic crew get fingers to keyboard, its just that i will absolutely never fail to acknowledge a common courtesy.
Its probably how we were brought up, this manners thing, my parents would have had a blue fit if i'd failed to use the three words fast disappearing from our language, i mean please, thankyou and sorry.
I know i'm fairly quickly going round the bend, but do others find their attitide changing towards some drivers.?
sorry it was driving me mad ! - PU :-)

You're right, there was dependable method in their gracelessness. They always knew what they were doing. And I learned a great deal about the useful rat-runs of this enormous town by following them down cobbled alleys.
Hi folks,
I would be grateful for some advice please on a second hand car I am planning to buy.
Car is a 2001 Nissan Micra SE+ Auto 1348cc
Car is advertised as:
"There is an exhaust sensor warning light illuminated on the dashboard. This is due to a faulty sensor - there is no problem with the exhaust or emissions as confirmed by the recent MOT."
I understand from the seller that the "Exhaust sensor warning light has been illuminated since approx 1 year and that the Nissan dealer confirmed that it was due to a faulty exhaust sensor which monitors the quality of the exhaust emissions. As emissions is tested as part of the MOT (which it passed without problem) in Nov 07 this sensor is largely redundant / irrelevant and has no bearing on how the car runs. Nissan dealer has quoted £600 to repair"
1. I am not a techie so would appreciate if someone could confirm that "this sensor is largely redundant / irrelevant and has no bearing on how the car runs."
2. Is it safe / recommended / legal to drive the car with a faulty sensor? What are the possible risks of do so?
Don't wish to buy the car and then realise that I will have to fork out £600.
Thanks in advance for your advice.
Cheers,

By the looks of it that Micra on eBay has only been serviced three times in the past 6 years. I'd walk away.
Whilst the petrol Micras might be capable of high mileages, the CVTs seem to have a high rate of failure - you don't see many for sale with more than 50000 miles on them unless they're for spares or repairs.
Having said that, my wife thinks that the K11 Micra is the greatest car ever made - I hate driving the thing. She says that the only car she's driven that is anywhere as good as a Micra is the Hyundai Accent, so if your wife and my wife have the same taste in cars, the Hyundai might be worth a look.
Picked up my friend's Accord yesterday, to take into supplying dealer. She had noticed a sudden, intermittent loss of power, at around 2500 rpm, with glowplug light coming on and flashing.
On driving car yesterday, no warning lights illuminated, but throttle felt unresponsive (no way as lively as my 130bhp TDCi Mondeo). Got car warmed up, then found a stretch of dual-carriageway where I could hold it in gear and get the revs up (had to be low gear - average speed cameras!). Hit 4000rpm and engine cut out, glow plug light flashing; would not restart while coasting. Stopped car, and got engine restarted at third attempt, with engine management light now permanently illuminated, but no glow plug light.
After further restart, vehicle feels fine, and no warning lights.
Has gone into dealer at 8am this morning - will let you all know what they find. Read more
My EGR now replaced. From a single 10 mile drive it appears to be sorted. Hope so, don't fancy yet more time off the road for a new fuel pump.

Hi again,
Bought it privately and then went to my usual garage to get it serviced and mentioned the spluttering to them then and they checked it but said there were no faults reported from the ECU thing.
And as I said, aside from the spluttering the cars been fine. Just this morning the warning light came on and the car started hopping. Would have taken it to the garage again today to see if they could find faults but they are shut until Wednesday and I need my car before then ideally, which is why I thought I would have a quick go at checking the coil pack quickly to see if there was any condensation, just in case it was something as simple as that and I could have the car back ready for work monday etc. But I dont think that's going to happen as I tried to follow your instructions for finding it and had no joy :o(
