1.1 2000 - bunny hopping and spluttering idling - Emmap
Hi,

Can someone please help, I have a saxo 2000 1.1 and ever since I got it its been idling oddly, almost spluttering below 1000 revs. But now, I got back from holiday and all of sudden my engine system management light has come on and switches between flashing and just being on all the time. The car seems to bunny hop when I get to between 1000 and 2000 revs while driving and just doesnt seem happy. I have seen in other posts people suggested cleaning the coilpack and checking the spark plugs, but I have tried looking under the bonet and cant see where either of these would be. Please can someone direct me to the right place so I can have a look and try and fix it myself as I cant afford a mechanic and desperately need my car.

Also, is it dangerous or bad for my engine to drive the car the way it is for now if I cant fix it and cant raise the money for a mechanic to fix it?

Thanks

Motoring's expensive - repairs sometimes just have to be done. This misfire has the potential to wreck the catalytic converter - you really don't want to pay for one of those.

The coilpack is a long plastic box bolted over the holes leading down to the spark plugs at the rear of the tin rocker cover. You'll need a long, special, spark-plug socket to get down there - note the plug brand if you do.

It's a very likely cause of the problem; but the sensible first move is to get any garage to read the fault-codes and come back with the exact results.

A Bougicord coilpack, 4 extensions and the essential, genuine Peugeot, plugs are around £120 from the dealers - don't even think of fitting anything else, these packs can fry the ECU when they go and that's £800 fitted.

Eeekk! Ok thank you, I will go to the garage and ask them to check for fault codes. When I first got the car, I asked the garage to check for fault codes then and they said they couldnt find anything wrong with it (even though it was doing that spluttering when idle thing).

All was fine until I got back from holiday today and the car's engine management light came on then things got bouncy as it were. I was just thinking that perhaps it was like others had mentioned with there being condensation in the coilpack because its been really cold here for the week I was away.

Thanks for your advice Mr Guru, you're a gem!

Did you buy it from the garage or privately?

Hi again,

Bought it privately and then went to my usual garage to get it serviced and mentioned the spluttering to them then and they checked it but said there were no faults reported from the ECU thing.

And as I said, aside from the spluttering the cars been fine. Just this morning the warning light came on and the car started hopping. Would have taken it to the garage again today to see if they could find faults but they are shut until Wednesday and I need my car before then ideally, which is why I thought I would have a quick go at checking the coil pack quickly to see if there was any condensation, just in case it was something as simple as that and I could have the car back ready for work monday etc. But I dont think that's going to happen as I tried to follow your instructions for finding it and had no joy :o(
