Hah! I return home to find my thread related to last night's England match ('Fabia' Capello - geddit) has been pulled over and ticketed by the humour police.

Shoulda known, of course - we were playing those wacky funsters from Switzerland.

OK, Pug - apply the cuffs now...

{Is it ok if I apply them instead? - DD}

I'm selling a car, a first for me, and was wondering what to do if someone wants to test drive the car. Do I take their word that they are correctly insured (they won't be under the car's policy), or should I ask for proof? The car is only worth £300-400. Read more

So just what is the other vehicle cover for ?.Is this another example of the insurance industry screwing money from its customers for something that doesn't exist ?

one of the others will respond if it was removed for any reason.

I can't recall seeing it either.

The only thing that I can think of, is that if the year & engine details weren't added to the subject header or included in the main message of the post, then maybe:-

hello all, i am writing this for a work colleague who is having this problem with his local renault dealer / brakes, on his car so please bear with me if i get a few details wrong,
he has asked me to point out that he is not out to rip-off the dealer, more so he wants to avoid being ripped off by the dealer for what could be un-neccessary work,

his wife had a minor fender-bender (ran into back of another car) resulting in some minor insurance claim work being undertaken at his local dealrership. as far as i can remember the work was around the bumper and cooling fan bearing, but i'm not 100% positive on that.

the dealership repairing the car had it for over a month and have said that the master cylinder and soemthing else brake related (cant quite remember at the mo) has gone and they want £1000 to repair, having had the car MOT'd less than 2months before the accident, he had noticed nothing wrong with the brakes what-so-ever, so he as surprised to get this news from the dealer. he has said no to the repairs for now on the car, signed a waiver that says the dealer has infomed him the brakes are dangerous and the car should not be driven, and tested the car in a secure car park, needless to say the brakes were not working as they had been prior to the car being taken away (he described it as like driving his work's transit van with 6 elepahants in the back, it just kept going and going).

the person at the dealers he spoke to when he was told about the brake problem said (quote) "you wouldn't normally notice it in day-to-day driving, only in stop start town traffic" (un-quote), normal day to day driving for the car involves 4miles through rush hour traffic to get home from work in the morning (varies between 7.45am and 8.30am), 2miles for the morning school run, 2miles for the afternoon school run, aswell as the shopping run on a saturday, as the car was collected and returned on a flatbed lorry, they only time it was driven after the accident was to get it onto the lorry and on the test-drive by the dealer,

he has been back to the garage that MOT'd the vehicle and has asked if there any cause for concern regarding the brake's master cylinder (ie they passed MOT but might not be in 100% working condition) but the mechanic was non-commital,

in short, what are his options..?
can the master cylinder fail "just like that" either to causes the accident, or while it was at the dealers..? or is there a more sinister plot by the dealer to make themselves a bit of work...?

any advice on what he can do is greatly appreciated... Read more

screwloose, as far as i know the test-driver only reported the problem to the mechanics, who then investigated to find the problem, when andy drove the car after getting it back, he said the pedal had a long push before it felt like it was doing something not softer or spongy, just slacker.

like i said in first post, it's a workmates car and problem, i'm merely helping him out by asking about here, but i'll get some more info from andy tonight at work, jot down a few more notes

I have just put down a deposit on a car and now need to sell my current car, preferably in the next 2 or 3 weeks for reasonable money.

Brief details are:
1992 Toyota Celica GT-Four JDM White in excellent condition inside and out.
98000 Miles, engine rebuilt 8000 Miles ago with forged pistons and steel head gasket.
Full service history with local import specialist since imported in 2003, I am the first private owner in this country.
Seats re-trimmed in leather 2 years ago.
Radio and all speakers replaced with Alpine DVD player and speakers.
No rust.
Only bad points are a few stone chips, one surface scratch, one small door dent and a slightly damaged wheel.

I have considered putting it on ebay and the GT4 owners club website, any other suggestions or advice greatfully received.

One other thing I am looking to get at least £3000, any chance? Read more

Nice one.

I've got to say I was deeply sceptical of Fleabay as a place for cars but having sold two it's been really striaghtforward and your ad was a good example of where it does well - if you know you're stuff as buyer or seller you can weed out the trash from those little nuances of the wording and how much of the warts and all the seller is prepared to share.

Midst all the other green activities we motorists are expected to do, why not have the street lights turned out after midnight. Or 10pm, or whatever.

Personally I don't believe in human activity as a 'cause' for alleged 'global warming'. I do hate waste however. What is the point in illuminating empty roads?

In Spain year before last, staying with friends in a sort of dugout cave dwelling (with swimming pool and all mod cons however) in a tiny hamlet in the hills above Granada. A glaring concrete street light shone all night outside the bedroom, forcing us to shut the shutters. It had been installed the year before to our hosts' great disgust, and I would have thought entirely unnecessarily. But the locals didn't seem to mind, they said.

I suspect local authorities everywhere are desperate to spend the money they extract from the population in such quantities. If they don't, they can't continue to ask for more. And then, given some inflation, what would they have to pour out of their ears after a while?

Could this be the ideal commuting car? Notwithstanding all the arguments about electric cars and CO2 etc, it's locally 100% clean, fast, has a 100 mile range and *apparently* will only cost £15k.

Not sure I believe it, but would be great if true. Well, except in winter, when it would probably be freezing! Read more

Can anyone offer some advice ? , when I turn the ignition on there is no battery light and the battery loosing charge . When the battery gets low any lights that are switched on start flashing and the air bag warning light comes on and the stereo turns off and will not come back on. Does anyone know if the alternator is the problem ?, also the battery has recently been replaced . Read more

Dynamic Dave

IIRC, if the battery light on the dash has blown, this can affect the charging of the battery as it relies on the bulb to complete the circuit.
Also, on older Vauxhalls, there was a braded earth strap between the engine and one of the bolts on the alternator. The lug that attached to the bolt could break, thus leaving the alternator with no earth connection. This can also stop the dash light from working. Might be worth looking to see if any wires have fallen off.

A 'maxi dot' trip computer is an option on the Fabia2 and the Roomster.
The brochure does not make it clear what the standard trip computer does and what would I get paying the extra cash?
I like the mpg , mileage remaining, time of journey stuff that my current Passat shows.

How?

Well on my Octavia the maxidot can do things like:

Do I want the windows to auto close if it rains
Do I want the cars lights to come on when I unlock the car or stay on when I get home and for how long
Do I want just the drivers door to unlock or all doors and hatch
Do I want the quick touch 3 wink indicator option on or off
Do I want the door mirror to dip when I select reverse
Do I want the trip to show miles or km, the time in 12h or 24h
The maxidot display can also mirror the radio display (in mine anyway) and show radio or cd info

The maxidot gives you control over options that would otherwise mean a hook up to a VAGCOM, probably at a dealer for a cost. It also looks nicer on the dash (if you like that sort of thing) and the text is a nice white colour with coloured warnings like low fuel, low washer fluid. Looks better than the VW red display IMHO.

Just thought on the way in to work, why don't they use the camera vans to issue tickets for defective lights, fog lights on when not required, using mobile phone in car, etc as well as speeding?

No additional coat (apart from the labour) and might sort some of these things out!

If they really had got it in for the motorist they would be doing it already! Read more

mss1tw

This already exists, it's some new system they can rewind and playback, and issue tickets accordingly.
