2000 (w reg) 1.7D - Alternator problem? - Andrea
Can anyone offer some advice ? , when I turn the ignition on there is no battery light and the battery loosing charge . When the battery gets low any lights that are switched on start flashing and the air bag warning light comes on and the stereo turns off and will not come back on. Does anyone know if the alternator is the problem ?, also the battery has recently been replaced .

If the battery light doesn't come on at all; then you have a charging fault of some kind.

Changing the [flat] battery for a new one only lasted until that one ran flat too and caused all that under-voltage chaos.

Could well be the alternator [can't be the fan belt] but they are too dear to just try-and-hope. Get an auto-sparks [LSUK etc.] to take a look at it - these ones aren't simple to test.

IIRC, if the battery light on the dash has blown, this can affect the charging of the battery as it relies on the bulb to complete the circuit.
Also, on older Vauxhalls, there was a braded earth strap between the engine and one of the bolts on the alternator. The lug that attached to the bolt could break, thus leaving the alternator with no earth connection. This can also stop the dash light from working. Might be worth looking to see if any wires have fallen off.
