I have developed a problem with my 206. The indicatirs have stopped working and so have the electric windows. I had an issue with the radio, so pulled the fuses to find out which one was for the radio. I think I have pulled a fuse for the BSI unit cos since then the problems have arisen. How do I get the rear cover off the BSI unit and is it simple enough to get reprogrammed? Read more

OK, I saw a snail on the M3 today. Seriously. L'Escargot (or Nissan S-Cargo to be exact)
I think they're being imported from Japan

I'm looking for a list of cars, and how much the road tax would cost for each one, specifically the lowest cost cars to tax.
Anybody know where I could find one?

Use the database shortcut for new cars. The downloads shortcut should give you band data for older vehicles by year (I may be wrong as I can't download it).

As per the title really, are the VNT and EGR systems actuated by vacuum pipes and solenoid switches on these engines?
Just curious! Read more
I don't "know" but I have very strong suspicions. It's almost certainly due to the introduction of setting errors if these parts are separated. These things are probably set during manufacture for a defined actuating rod position at a certain actuator setting (probably full boost).
I suspect dear old Ford have saved a few cents by this "design". Putting electronics anywhere near a turbocharger turbine is a nonsense.

My 98 Polo (8 Valve AEX engine) is not firing at tickover on cylinders 1 and 3. Pulling the plug caps off makes no difference to the tickover speed (its very lumpy of course). Its also overfuelling and very high Hydrocarbons reading coming from it. So far the garage and I have:
Changed plugs, leads and coil. (it always has a good spark).
swapped injectors with 2 and 4.
Cleaned out the throttle body twice.
Sent the ECU away and had it lab tested, no problems at all they say.
Its now out of MOT and won't pass because of the high emissions, its practically undrivable anyway. My independant garage doesnt know what to try next, I've also heard horror stories of people going to the dealer and spending £1500 on similar problems and it's still not completely fixed.
It's always the same 2 cyclinders that are not properly firing. If it was a temp sensor i'd expect the fault not to be cylinder specific.
All suggestions very welcome!!!

Thanks, can I ask what the P0171 is? I'll ask the garage what the codes were and report back.

I have had a screeching noise coming from the belt area of the car. All belts have been changed apart from the timing belt. The water pump is new and also the alternator. The timing belts life is 45.000 miles. When the belt is changed do the pulleys need to be changed as well. If so which ones and how much would it cost. I am thinking the pulleys that the timing belt rest on are responsible for the noise. What do you think? Read more
Also make sure you have the right tensioner to fit the tensioner mounting stud, VW did change the dia. of the stud, so you can end up with a small dia. stud and a large dia. mounting hole in the tensioner!

I spent too long in UK and can't shake off all the behaviour patterns. They
keep coming back to haunt me.
Do you mean that when you flash your lights to let someone in here in NZ, they just look at you with their mouth flapping open? I get that as well, but it is slowly improving. Here in Christchurch there seems to be a higher than average number of drivers with UK experience as the usual UK courtesies seem to be catching on. Still plenty of brain-dead NZ only drivers though.
It shows there are some good vehicles out there.

So the van is averaging 60k/year, and it's on motorways/autoroutes for 90% of that, if not more, running at 60-70mph. Near perfect conditions for an engine and gearbox, and very little use of the clutch. i reckon it could do the same again, if the body work stays good.
Hi. I have a varient twist on the old 'someone's dumped a car in my driveway' problem
I live in a shared house. 5 rooms 5 tenents 3 cars 2 parking spaces.
one of the cars is effectively a 'dumped' car and is not used by the tenent. It just sits decaying in one of the parking spaces - preventing use of this space by an active driver who either has to park outside the premises or keep shuffling with the other person to get lawn space.
The tenent has been offered money for the car, but refuses to sell. The tenent shows no sign of mending the vehicle (which convieniently has it's brakes locked) and it still has a flat tyre from monhs ago.
At what point are we alowed to dismantle either the car or the tenent?
ALL suggestions welcomed.

If I suspected a car was involved in a serious offence, I would have to follow my conscience and report my suspicions to the BIB. Of course, a less upright citizen than myself would probably phone the Crimestoppers number - anonymously - alleging something quite, quite serious going on re: car reg. ABC123 parked at the back of.... Road.
End result: car's keeper gets an official visit, which may or may not result in car being made roadworthy or moved or sold. Car's keeper rightly suspects who dobbed him in and fillets his co-tenants with a bread knife while they sleep.
After checking up on my car, which was left overnight at the roadside, the cops obviously noticed that it wasn't insured. They then came to my house and spoke to my partner who told them I was at work. He doesn't drive and has nothing to do with the car, yet the Officers gave him a HORT1 requesting to check the insurance. Obviously the car is now insured but the HO/RT1 names him as the driver. The insurance does {this is transcribed exactly as the poster posed the question - PU} as he doesn't drive the car, so how can he walk into a cop shop and produce insurance documents that have nothing to do with him ? Will he get done ?
Wae (sic) there being no insurance on the car at the time the HORT1 was given even though he was nowhere hear the car or will I get done ? Can you advice me thanks ?
Post re-written so that the poster was not SHOUTING. There has had to be some editing of the post as the poster had not used any punctuation marks. The word "wae" means nothing to me in the rudimentary grasp I have of three languages and has been left where it was also a rather ambiguous question left exactly as the poster left it..... Oh and the duplicate post deleted. Read more
