Hi, I have recently fitted a 1.4 zetec SE engine (2001) into a mk4 ford fiesta 1.25 (1998).

Upon attempting to start the engine the engine is cranking but wont fire. It appears to want to fire but there is something stopping it.

I have had a diagnosis on the ECU where a problem with the crankshaft sensor was discovered, which in due course was replaced.

The car (according to a second diagnosis) is electronically sound yet it will still only crank and not fire.

I have exhausted all options open to me and still no luck. What could the problem be?

Could anyone help me out?

Cheers

I have a 1993 ZX 1.9 diesel which up until now has given great mpg. It has now started drinking the stuff and there are no obvious leaks. Any suggestions/advice would be most appreciated.

Is there any reason why changing these shouldn't be a home job? The last we did was my nephews Mondeo which took a while! Read more

piston power

There is no reason why not just take your time do one side at a time, most folk on here say crack off the bleed nipple and push the piston back, this expell's moisture behind the piston.

I don't bother i just undo the resovoir cap and push the piston back only flipped 1 set of seals in a master cylinder in 20 yrs, maybe i have been lucky! change the fluid if older than 2yrs or not sure if been done.. good luck..

Hi

Im looking to buy a new Corsa SXi 1.4 and been looking at the online brokers and www.nicenewcar.co.uk are the cheapest ive found yet. Ive sent a few emails and they sound good, basically have the same terms and responses as the other brokers but I was just wondering if anyone has ever used them?

Over the last few months I have noticed that the temp gauge will only register a normal temp (midway on the gauge about 90 degrees) when the car is driven hard (i.e. climbing a hill) and when I drive at a more gentle pace or coast down a hill the temp gauge drops to about 65 to 70 degrees. I suspected the thermostat and have replaced it with no change in symptoms. I am now beginning to suspect the water pump is not working although the power steering is ok, and this is used to drive the water pump by a spline shaft connection. My problem is that, if the water pump failed, I would expect the engine to overheat and in my case the temp never rises above midway on the gauge. The other effect from this is a drop of about 5mpg. Has anybody out there suffered similar symptoms or had a water pump replaced due to the above?

mr mca is correct. There was a long thread about this problem on a Mondeo forum a while ago where someone had this problem and finally he found out about the 2nd thermostat and had a right game convincing the dealer to change it. Eventually when all else failed it was changed and cured the problem.

Just beware of the cost if you get a Ford dealer to do it out of warranty because they will regard it as quite labour intensive.

The guage on my 2.2 takes a few miles to get to half way but then stays there all day.

Lets design a car that would be generally accepted by the backroomers.

You know me by now, doesn`t matter if its a skip as long as it has the mechanical features I want.
these are

wind up windows
no central locking
big boot, small vehicle, 2 seats
unpainted plastic bumpers
best possible economy for largest `boot` space
(bought a van not car to achieve all the above)
common rail diesel
camchain
hydraulic tappets
Galvanised
no wet liners
no linear clutch slave cylinder
no duel flywheel
heater fan and resisters accessible without removing dashboard
non metallic paint
popular vehicle towards end of production run.
(so less build faults and parts available in breakers.

Thats what i`m thinking in a new car showroom....
eccentric or what ;)

So design your own car, with what it `has` to have and features that you could not tolerate. It would be interesting to see if the end result reaches agreement on anything and what is the `nearest match`. Probably make the manufacturers cringe instead I think ;)

Various motorbike magazines had a reader survey to decide what Everyman would like, post WW2. The outcome was the Velocette noddy bike. Boxer side-valve, 192cc, with leg shields and shaft drive, IIRC. No-one wanted it except the police. Even they must have had their doubts:)

So if white is the new silver, does that mean the police forces will go back to buying white cars instead of silver? ;-)

Has anybody else noticed that an increasing number of cars are running about with only one working headlamp ? Is it confined to South Manchester ?

Over the weekend, I've seen 3 x Vauxhall Astras with a headlight out, 1 of them also had a tail light out, 1 x Merc ML370 with no number plate lamp, a Volvo T5 with a brake light out, and 2 x Transit Vans with a tail light out.

All were police vehicles on active duty.
