A mate is selling his S60 and has offered me first refusal.

2001 2.0T S on a 51 reg in Maya Gold
124k with a full Volvo history to 110k. Now 4k overdue a service.
11 months MOT
Timing belt done in the 90k service at a Volvo dealer.
New clutch (Volvo dealer) and new alternator (local indie auto spark) in the last 10,000 miles.
Drives absolutely A1 - engine is smooth, very punchy, sounds lovely under load, has bags of grunt and there are no nasty clonks or wandering on the road. A couple of minor trim creaks only. Otherwise quiet and refined.
Good spec - all electrics, part leather, radio/CD, cruise, air-con (all working)

Things wrong with it:
It's falsely reporting a blown sidelight bulb
One of the boot lid struts is broken
Minor scuffing on bumper corners.
Shortly in need of two front tyres.

It's going in Autotrader at £2800, but he's offered it to me for £2,500

My concerns are:

120k on a turbo petrol engine. It drives well, but how long before it's going to need a turbo?
I know nothing about these cars in terms of what goes wrong with them, what to look for, and what they cost to service and run.
Fuel economy. He really doesn't care about this and genuinely doesn't monitor it. What can I expect from it on a gentle motorway run? It's not going to be a diesel Mondeo, but neither does it go (or sound) like one. Could I get 35 mpg out of it on a gentle commute?

Strikes me as a heck of a lot of car fo £2500. What do you reckon? It's not a car I've considered, but you know what it's like when something comes up at what seems like a decent price and you know the recent history of it....

Cheers

Glad you're liking it.

I loved my old Volvo V40 2.0T, the best seats I've ever experienced and the overtaking punch / relaxed drive was great (even better after adding a bleed valve from Kalmar Union :-D)

Does anyone know how to reset the service indicator lamp on a mark 1 zafira? Read more

Dynamic Dave

The proceedure to switch off INSP message is as follows.

1. Ignition Off
2. Hold Trip Reset In
3. Turn on Ignition
4. Still Holding Trip Reset wait for three (or maybe four) dashes
5. Turn off Ignition
6. Turn on Ignition

On later Vauxhall models you also have to hold the brake pedal down before turning the ignition on (same point as step 2 above)

Hello,

Just had car serviced and mechanic says the fuel pump has a leak underneath: he said its diifficult to see where it is coming from. He said it needs to go to a specialist to be repaired and will cost a lot of money, at least £300. I feel a prat as I have just bought the car! Anyway, does anyone have an idea of how much it will cost: is pump replaced, or repaired?

Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

Would this problem make the car difficult to start? I have a leaking fuel pump but have not located the source yet, but the car will not start.

Has no one noticed this thread is over a year old.

but to answer the question finally, you can fit a dump valve to a 306 1.9td, the kits that are available or can be diyed easily use a microswitch triggered by the throttle lever to tell the dump valve when to operate, it doesn't make any increase in performance at all, if anything it can marginally affect performance as the turbo needs to spool up again. people fiit them purely for the noise they make, i happen to like the noise but never fitted one to any of my 306's as i would only have one where it is actually required as a couple of hundred quid on a noise seems silly to me.

I've recently bought (from a dealer) a 53 plate Focus Tdci estate but find the brakes fairly soft and not all that sharp/efficient. Previous car was a 306hdi and the brakes on this were lovely and solid and were really good. The Focus brakes just seem to be a bit poor really in comparison.

Have other owners found this? Can it be improved? On the Pug I found that certain makes of brake pads with different compounds varied in feel and efficiency, the Focus has Ford pads fitted front & rear (rear discs on this car) and I'm debating about changing them. I have bled the brakes & the fluid is clean with no air bubbles.

thanks

Ooookay. I have now bled the brakes through with Halford's best dot 5.1 fluid (actually I have no idea what Halfords brake fluid is like, reasonably quality I hope). Although I mentioned in an earlier message that I did previously bleed some fluid through on each of the calipers and found no air, when I bled it through fully this time, one of the rear calipers did have some air in it, hurrah! So much for dealer servicing then!

As a result the brakes do feel more solid and definately work better. Still not as good as my previous car but that's just wishful thinking. They are now much more of an adequate standard, so thanks to all for thoughts and advice...

As yet I have not seen a Citroen C6 on the road at any time. Citroen are in the midst of a heavy advertising campaign but I note not a mention of this model. Has it bitten the dust or is there another reason.
It is clear that will never be a quantity seller however they seem to be denying its existence since the various road tests in the press some time ago. Read more

They may have stopped importing to the UK but its still on Citroen france web site and you can still order any model and any combination of trim not due to be replaced until late 2013 according to Citroen.Maybe the lack of them is due to the 57500€ price tag.

Well in my defence, it was all down to the wife, One of those well intentioned Xmas pressies which seemed destined to languish unused in my garage along with all the rest.....

Anyway today I got so fed up with the state of my trusty MPV which looked like a tip that I decided to clean it for the first time in about 6 months. I'd already started untangling the coiled hose when I saw the Proshine box. The lazy lobe of my brain told me to try it - it had to be better than water, shampoo, wax etc. etc. on a bright but freezing day after all. Deeply cynical about its ability to clean off all the grime without scouring the paint I decided to try it on the rear bumper which has had one of two scrapes and where any damage to the paint wouldn't notice too much. I sprayed it on, rubbed it in with a microfibre cloth and wiped it over with another...... The result was truly amazing!!! It cut through all the dirt and left a wonderful glossy shine where previously there'd been months of grime. Encouraged, I decided to try it on one of the rear side panels and again it cut through the grime, tar spots etc. and restored the finish to what looked almost a showroom standard. I carried on and finished the entire car in about and hour, including the awkward roof which to my shame I think I've only ever cleaned properly once in the 4 years I've owned the vehicle. This bit took a bit longer and required 2 applications to remove some really tough dirt but the result was just as good. Not only did the Spray & Shine leave the paintwok looking great, the chrome, glass, black trim and clear plastic lights have come up shinier than I've seen them since I got the car and entirely scratch free so far as I could see in the hazy sunlight.

I've always been very cynical about 'miracle' motoring products but having now tried it I can honestly say that it's fantastic stuff. No more hoses, gallons of wasted water and those annoying calcium residue drying marks for me - I'm sticking to this stuff and will have no hesitation in using it on the wife's new Focus.

For those who may be interested she got it via a tv shopping channel and it cost about £20 for 2x32oz bottles which, judging by how much I used today, I reckon will do my MPV about 6-8 times. A great product and excellent value for money I'd say, especially if we have another dry summer. Read more

Hi all ? I call on your expertise

I have yet another issue with my Astra, just recently the full beam (forward on, and flash) have stopped working I parked the car overnight at work, whilst on a business trip recently where temperatures dropped down to about -4, and when I picked up at night the following evening I started to drive my car, and put it into full beam ? the full beam warning light, and the lights (full beam not dipped) started to flicker, and would flash , I switched off full beam and pulled the stalk back (flash) and it did the same sometimes not illuminating at all, however you can hear the relay clicking ? now either full beam, or flash (inc warning light on dash) fail to illuminate however when pulling the stick back you can hear what I assume to be the relay clicking

TBH I have been totally disappointed with this version of the Astra, I have had issues with clattering hydraulic valve lifters, the thermostat is gone ? because the temp gage barely comes out of the cold zone, and when the car is cold it?s so sluggish, and clumsy.
I can?t replace the thermostat myself because instead of putting it next to or near the radiator they have hidden it at the back under the timing belt cover
Setting off when the car does get warm is no better, set of in first then the seems to be no power, and then suddenly it surges forward, its just not smooth, I used to own a MK1 Astra and have never experienced anything like this (apart from the engine running cool, which I could do the thermo myself as it was at the top of the engine bay next to the rad ? very easy to do)
I don?t like the way you have to replace the bulbs at the back by removing the entire light cluster from the back of car instead of removing the bulb holders out of the back.
The Car has only done 40K and full serviced to, I expected a lot better from Vauxhall TBH
(Sorry didn?t mean to rant) LOL!

I really appreciate any help - Thanks in advance

Hi Fuse looks fine, while "testing" it looks like one of the bulbs has gone, so im guessing that it was on its way out, wich may have casued it go wierd

I remeber my alternator whent on my Cavalier and instead of just lighting the battery warning light it casued the dash to light up like blackpool illiminations with all manner of warning lights coming on, i didnt realise it at the time but a electrical imbalance casues all manner of weird things, so im hopeing thats what this is - i will change the bulbs and report back though

Many thanks

Ten days ago, I parked my car in a residents' parking space in Westminster - in W1 (for which I have a valid parking permit).

This morning I noticed the car had two parking tickets on it. I had managed to park partly on a spot which had a single yellow line between two areas of residents' parking. It was dark and the portion of the yellow line I had parked on was so badly worn that it is scarcely visible.

I consider myself hugely lucky only to have received two tickets - on 11th and 12th, and not to have been towed away.

Equally, how often can one receive a penalty ticket? Every time a parking attendant passes? More often? And how come no other of those rather efficient parking attendants in Westminster managed to give me a ticket during this period?

::Fuming:: Oh yes, and I get to pay the congestion charge too for the privilege of moving my car this morning.

According to the parking attendant I asked this morning - who covers this part of Westminster, one every 24 hours.

Given the second was issued only 22 hours after the first...

I have owned 7 cars of this general type to date, MGTC (2 examples) TD, GT, tf and Sunbeam Alpine, Volvo P1800. I would now like an MX5. There don't seem to be many recent model, low mileage examples around so I guess I will have to be prepared for a high price. Can anyone with a post-2005 example kindly comment on what to look for please? I would buy from a Mazda franchise. The Mazda Approved system seems to cover a lot of points. Is it trustworthy in practice?

Re "Mazdz say it's perfectly normal. It only happens when the car is warmed up but it doesn't sound very good on a 20000 pound car." Its only a £20,000 car here: in Japan its cheaper by far:) Say £13,000 - judged on that basis you'd expect rattles.....
