Can you please advise how I change the battery on my 99' VW Passat,
I can disconnect it , undo the main hold down bolt, but that's it ? I
can't see how the battery is meant to come out of the compartment
that it is in, all I can see are two options, bend / remove the trim
from the bottom of the window ( not sure how) , or force off the
rubber trim that runs along the fire wall, not sure this is suppose
to happen either ? There must be an easier way.

Can you help?

You don't say if it's a petrol or diesel model. Mines a 2000 1.8t and runs like a complete pig after the battery is disconnected. It's all to do with the throttle settings being stored in volatile memory which needs the battery to maintain it. In theory, the engine should sort itself after a period while relearning driving characteristics. In my case, I had 3 days of a very unresponsive engine until I managed to reset the throttle adaptation using VAG-COM.

I have had four quotes to have the cam belt replaced on my 8 year old Peugeot 406 Hdi, 52,000 miles. The first from Peugeot was about £450. The next, two local garages, were £360 and £300 and the fourth quote was, from someone recommended to me and who is ?a good mechanic?, £95. Naturally, I am a little worried about the last quote and I mentioned this when I spoke to him. He said that was perfectly understandable but that I could watch him carry out the work if it made me feel better.

He was of the opinion that there is no way that this work would take anywhere near the three and a half to four hours that I?ve been told it would take. I managed to locate a parts retailer on the web and found a replacement cam-belt for this model for about £45, which means the labour charge for the lowest quote is about £50.

Anyway, as you can imagine, I was wondering what people thought of these quotes, especially the lowest, and would welcome any advice. Thanks.

OE - original equipment.

A kit is belt, guide roller and tensioner - the water-pump is cam-belt driven.

Hello...

Having a few issues with my Vectra C. Yesterday the dash light to say theres a bulb out came on. So therefore I replaced the brake light.

From just after replacing that another light has started to appear with a car & a spanner thru it. It is not staying on all the time, just coming on every now and again.

Anybody know of any faults or what it can be?

Thanks

Hi Dave, yeah checked all lights including side indicators & number plate lights, everything is working fine, I am just concentrating on the rear lights as this was where the issue first was.

Hello all

I have a Mk 4 150 GT TDI with a problem.

When I bought the car about 7 months ago the camshaft was replaced by the garage I bought it from they also renewed a couple of valves. The problem I have now is white smoke on start up and a smell of unburnt diesel all the time, I have checked out the heater plugs and they are fine.
I have not had the the engine checked out would the diagnostics be able to tell if the timing was out.
The engine does not seem to be low on power and it seems to be getting worse for the smell and white smoke which is worse when cold.
What is the most likely cause of this white smoke and unburnt diesel.

Thanx

Just given my car a service- and have to say it was a piece of cake. Can't have taken more than 45 mins and that included 10 mins finding the correct key for the sump plug. I was expecting the oil and air filters to be easy, but wasn't sure of the fuel filter as have heard about them needing to be bled etc but i couldn't have been simpler. Two quick release fitting and your away. It started straight away after, no cranking or anything. Well done SEAT! Although it does make me question why the main dealer wanted 200 quid for it.
How many on here still do all their own servicing?

My W reg 1.4 almera has an occasional slipping clutch. Threre is plenty of bite on the pedal and never a problem changing gear,it was notified at the last MOT 12 months ago but I said leave it as I had never felt it and they wanted £250. I read on a website somewhere it could be a cable fault that takes minutes to sort out, is anybody aware of this I dont intend to have it changed when it goes in again shortly but would like it to be rectified if possible by adjusting the cable

"It's very odd for a MOT to concern itself with a clutch fault - well outside their usual checks"

When driving the car out of the brake test rollers, or onto a ramp, even slight clutch slip will be highlighted.

In this case, although not part of the test, an advisory note to the vehicle owner is in order.

It's surprising how cheaply broadband can be on the lower tiers of ISP offerings. I bet it's no more than dialup as they don't want people using banks of their modems over phone lines.

Right back in 2001 when I first got broadband (at 512Kbs) it was so much better and shared it between 3 PCs back even then. If you had sky you could pay a one off fee and get their broadband for nothing per month.

Hi, have a 2003 Picasso and a occasional fault has appeared.

Sometime when we start up the engine, the whole dashboard fails to light, no power going to radio or the hazard lights.

Other times its fine.

Fault only happens at start up. it never happens mid journey i.e. power never goes when its been working and engine is running.

Any ideas, i had a look at the interior fusebox and it looks a mess behind all the cable looms. Read more

I had a similar fault where initially the dash display dimmed as the engine revs dropped to idle, and after a few weeks all electrical functions stopped.
I discovered that it was a loose connection on the feed from the battery to the engine compartment at the main terminal post next to the ECU - worth checking.

My shiny new (well, less than a year since last renewal) windscreen has a small fingernail sized chip / gouge more or less dead centre and about 200mm below the interior mirror. Darned annoying, but I suppose it's what you get if you spend a lot of time on motorways.

I don't want to claim again because I reckon I'll get a loading for having had 2 new windscreens in less than a year. But, if the specialists fix it rather than renew it, does that still count as a claim and lead to insurance premium loading next time?

Are there DIY kits? Or mobile repairers?

Advice please. Read more

Thanks for the info, a very timely reminder.
A few weeks ago, for the first time ever, I needed a new screen .
I am certain, in ignorance, I would not have declared this claim at renewal time in May.
