I think I can remember a series of cars relatives had with this, or similar steering when I was a kid.
Six Inches play in an Austin A40 (Or was that A60) Cambridge. Did your `Auntie Ethel` also drive down the road `sawing` at the steering?

Steering free play....? See a series landrover for details! I'm sure LUD will agree
I'd also agree about "old" Landrovers. 30 odd years ago I had to drive a selection of them while at work - they were mostly terrible: several inches of free play in the steering, and a tendancy to go where they wanted almost regardless of steering input.
Later on we had some brand new ones which even had synchromesh on all the forward gears, but they were no better in the steering department.
The nicest of them all was a series 1 "safari" long wheelbase (107" ??). The steering was lighter, with a bit less free play, and it had some effect on where you were going.
When I joined the company the transport manager took prospective drivers out in the worst of them all - if you could keep it on the lefthand side of the rutted roads he took you on, and keep it there when you braked, you were considered safe to drive...
Can anyone help with this? I've just test driven a Golf Driver 1.8L (ltd edition, apparently), 100k on the clock, M registration. Drives well but the clutch bites a bit high up which made me wonder if it was slipping. The dealer is putting a year's MOT on it and new middle box but there's no tax.
It was in the showroom at £800 which I thought was way over the top (although by no means an expert!) and they said I could have it for £594 but without warranty. My neighbour, who's forever buying cars, says £400 would be nearer the mark.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

The rust on a Mk3 Golf won't be visible til it's up on a ramp/hoist, as it's right underneath.
You need to spend a little bit of time looking for cars that have been cared for by one owner for a longish time. Buy from an old boy who is giving up driving! There's so much to choose from, but I'd have a look at the Nissan Almera (no image, but good engineering) and the Peugeot 205 (good image, a long time ago) but they really don't rust, and they are cheap to maintain.
The Almera may well be in the hands of an older owner who values quality over looks.
I have a 1.1 106 N reg(1996) and I have just replaced the Lambda sensor and the cat as they were Knackered. The problem is that I still have an idle speed that is too high. Sometimes when the engine is warm, the idle will drop but not always. Any Ideas?

I changed the coolant Temp sensor on the gearbox side of the block. It has a green conector

Do they realise what they're taking on??
Friend at work wrote off car after it spun after hitting a shed load of wooden panels at a roundabout on a dual carriageway.
Q:If the person or firm responsible for the load is identified, are they liable for all the accidents it causes?
I think they are, but in the world of insurance who knows?

If the police identify them; they'll likely go for an "unsafe load" conviction. That will help any damages claim against the owners of the truck.

Hi
I've been trying to locate a spare part for the passenger compartment fusebox (the one under the dashboard). It's been very frustrating, because suppliers of new Honda parts told me that the part has been discontinued - they said the part number is 38250-SR3-E01.
So, I've tried at scrapyards & carbreakers. I bought a fusebox from one yard, but my friend who is repairing the car told me it is missing a fuse for the horn switch. Another scrapyard told me that Honda released two Civics in 1995, one with airbag and one without airbag. The fuseboxes & ignition switches are different.
Can anyone describe to me exactly what the difference is? Read more
Thanks. I didnt realise till now abt this variation thing. Previous car was a Skoda & getting parts for that was dead easy. I'll ask my friend if he can do what you say.
Cheers
Felt it was important to post the following advice here as it is a scam that we are increasingly seeing and although on the face of it you would say "who would fall for that", naivety and a bargain can blind the astutest of people. This scam is prevalent on line, on all the car selling sites.
The vehicle is offered for sale at a significantly reduced price, potentially 50% of value, possibly less. The vehicle is a UK car, but the owner is now living abroad, often Portugal or Spain, they need to sell the car to buy a LHD. They will include shipping costs in the price and offer that you pay the amount into Escrow, with the shipping company, who will only release the cash to them when the car arrives.
Of course the car never arrives and further investigation shows that neither does the shipping company, despite what appears to be a flashy website. As for the vehicle, the ID is taken from a car that does exist, one that has often only recently been sold via an online site, therefore if you carry out a status check, everything will appear to be in order. Of course this is a paper car and they have simply lifted the pictures and the reg number.
We have seen a number of customers scammed this way recently, many of them bright people who just couldn?t get past ?A Bargain?. One gentleman even went to Dover on the day in question to pick up his £20k car which he had bought for £10k, despite our advice against it?..
Few points to think about here when buying?.
1. These days there is no such thing as a bargain, in our experience any vehicle that is for sale at more than 15% below market value probably has something to hide
2. If you advertise your car for sale, make sure the VRM is hidden and at least make it more difficult for these people to get the ID in the first place?
If in doubt, walk away, a £20k car is not a bargain at £10k if it doesn?t exist !

Leif - they go to DriveTheDeal because they have a reputation, for a start. The buyers know that if they have a problem, then they can go to Trading Standards and the courts - not possible when dealing with the Autotrader/Ebay scammer. There's no company for the same reason as there is no car!
The "bargains" I'm describing are cars at 50% of book, not £1k off dealer rrp.
Hello,
I've performed my fortnightly oil and water check today and noticed my coolant was right down - not enough to set off a warning light but it must've been blooming close to it. Anyway, when I opened up the oil cap I noticed a fair build up of creamy gunge clinging to the bottom of the cap with a little bit on the inside of where I put the oil (dunno the proper term for it!) - I know enough to know that this gunge can be a fairly bad sign.
I've done a few googles and various things have been mentioned.
1. With my coolant being so low, would this mean the temperature of the engine would've been higher than normal and therefore caused the gunge?
2. The dipstick shows clear normal-looking oil - before and after a journey sufficient to heat the engine up.
3. Most of my journeys are around 12-15 miles long (basically to and from work or to the cinema and back) - I've heard mention that short journey's can sometimes cause this but 12-15 miles is more than enough to get my temperature gauge to its usual leve.
4. The temp gauge has not deviated from it's usual position once the engine has been running - the car doesn't appear to get hotter more qujickly etc.
I'm assuming the recent very frosty weather has resulted in the coolant being used up so quickly? I've checked under the car and there isn't any fluids leaking apart from an oily build up under the gearbox (it's always been like that for as long as I've had the car).
5. There's been mention that a faulty rocker cap can cause the gunge - what is a rocker cap!? Is is the actual oil cap? Would a new one resolve it?

Its likely the recent very cold weather, take it for a long run then change oil and filter.
Or you could just ignore it ;)
Regards
Just checked my my oil and it does not even show up on the dipstick, i topped the oil up only 3 weeks ago, so what could be causing it to use so much oil? the engin looks clean and no oil under the car when left over night, any suggestions would be great. Read more
Its done 112,000 miles, if its just the age of the car i can live with that just dont want anything to be wrong as i had the clutch replaced 2 weeks ago which cost £ 220 and as you say the car is old so dont really want to spend any more out on it, and to be far apart from the clutch going (it was the original clutch so did well to last over 110,000 miles) ive had no problems, had its MOT in January and passed with no faults at all and not even an advisory note.

Surely any wheeltrim for the correct rim size would fit.
