I'm looking at a 2002(52) Stream 'SE Sport' with the 2.0 i-VTEC unit. Car will do around 7500 miles per annum, transporting two children under three and associated paraphernalia. I know and love the 80's/90's/00's Civic, but I have no experience with this model or engine. Car-by-car suggests performance/handling are stronger points than outright practicality. Zafira or Picasso were also on the shortlist, and a younger example of either can be had for the same money as the Honda I'm sure. Honda engineering and reputation for reliability of the chain-cam 2.0 is the main appeal of the Stream, but I'm not sure this is enough to swing it, in the light of the cheaper running costs and versatility of the competition. I would be grateful for any advice from past/present owners to aid the decision making process, in particular with regard to:
- carrying capacity and practicality with rearmost seats folded. I think perhaps Zafira beats Stream on this point.
- real world achievable mpg - not a major issue for planned annual miles, but need to factor into costs
- servicing/parts costs
- anything to watch out for?
I'm yet to view this Honda but would like to go armed with the facts.
thanks,
Ed.

Update? We looked at quite a lot of Picassos and Zafiras, we liked the practicality of them both, but the Citroens looked ratty with a few miles on the clock, and the Vauxhalls seemed overpriced. The driving experience with the Stream was far more agreeable, which ultimately convinced SWMBO. So we chose the Honda. Picked it up a few weeks back and so far, it's been a delight. Luggage space is ample for the family. We've not really experimented with the 7-seat configuration yet. Performance/handling are wonderful. Averaged 31mpg to date, less frugal than the Rover it replaces, but hopefully no more cooling-system woes to contend with in the future ;-)

Ed.
Ok heres the problem...
Drove 7 miles in car yesterday to watch footy match at a mates, - no problems with clutch on journey. Coming home everything seemed ok but i kept crunching the gears. By the time I got home, I had to push the clutch right down to change gear.
Biting point is right at the bottom of travel - it used to be 1/2- 3/4 way up. You hardly have to move your foot before it takes up drive!! Its girlfriends run around and she has just called to say that shes struggling to change gear.
Any ideas what it might be? I thought that the clutch was biting a bit high before and now its gone right to the bottom of travel in about 10 miles. Its done about 40 miles today and she has to get home from work yet (another 30 or so) and seems to be getting worse.
Is it new clutch time? This one has done 125,000 Read more
As the weather was nice, I didnt bother with trying to fix it - washed and waxed my MG instead!!
However, drove the 200 last night and the clutch has gone back to normal and biting about half - 3/4 way up the pedal - very odd!!
I can only think the tensioner on the cable is about to fail so will replace it anyway - must be the worlds first self repairing car!!!
hi, i have a 98 vectra 2.0 di dtl which starts and drives, but runs lumpy when cold and will not rev above 2,500 rpm, when the engine management light light comes on.i have replaced fuel filter, leak off pipes, maf sensor.Took it to a garage for diagnostic check and they tell me pump has a fault.Curious thing is though is i drove through a deep puddle last week and afterwards normal performance returned [revving fully no light on] but next day back to poor running,do you think ishould try a crank sensor?. also told mechanic puddle story and he said "probably a coincidence"????.does smoke excessively when cold and when it hits rev ceiling[2,500 ish], let revs drop down and eml goes off any thoughts much appreciated, thanks alan.

I have a 01/ 51 plate fiat doblo which snapped the timing belt at around 25/30mph, how much damage is likely to be done, it has 103,000 on the clock is it worth fixing by the way it is a 1.9d, thing is should it have gone so early as i had new timing gear and belt fitted at 87,000 Read more
If the timing belt has snapped, regardless of engine or road speed, there will be serious damage to the valves and pistons if you are really unlucky......
For the belt to fail so soon, something is amiss with the belt or one of the components running off it.
Please keep us posted on your progress.
Hi i have been having problems with my clutch pedal rising after in has been pressed and i was told by the AA that the clutch slave cylinder was leaking, after giving me some more fluid it worked fine and said just to keep an eye on the level and top it up to get me to a garage to get it repaired, i would just like to know does any one have any idea on how much this will cost to repair? any info would be much appreciated. Read more
Yes, I agree, for the amount of labour involved to change the clutch slave cylinder, it would be foolish not to replace the whole clutch at the same time.
is there more than one water temperature sender?
does the sender control the autochoke? daughter has a "poor starter" which chugs and vibrates, and has a habit of cutting out, a "mechanic" says fault is sender, water temp gauge isnt working, could it be the sender?
cheers Read more
Shorting the sender to ground is a dumb thing to tell her to do. It's
probale either bust the ECU or the gauge. We stopped doing this in the early
nineties. Regards Peter
thats about the last time i did it
cars running ok, water temp sender supplied was wrong one (went in, but wrong) it was a zetec mondeo item????
car starts/idles, cuts out when cold, then goes ok
more to follow
if im unlucky.................
Serviced my 2006 Citroen Dispatch yesterday, only problem being the fuel filter.
Any advice on changing it?
Is the pump self bleeding or is there a hand pump?
The model is the 110 hp version, the new filter is a paper canister type meaning the filter casing needs split.
Any advice would be appreciated
Cheers
Rob

So far its been pretty good, no problems at all.
Drives pretty well and get approx 40mpg.
Carries 2 motorbikes so all in I'm pretty happy with it.
Whatever happened to the trial that was supposed to take place a few years ago?
I think it is time to start the debate again
On a recent trip from London to Doncaster I witnesses the collective stupidity that passes for HGV driving on the M11/A14/A1.
My journey and that of every other road user, was constantly disrupted by one lorry pulling out in an attempt to overtake another that was going just marginally slower. These manouvers slowed all the following traffic down for a good 5 minutes as the two lorries travelled side by side and then in at least 60% of the manouvers the original would be overtaker was forced to pull back in where he started from.
Result constant congestion, delay and disruption.
This week I drove across Denmark where HGVs are banned from the outside lane in daylight, no problems what so ever in 3 hours of motorway driving.
The same is true of the A5 in Germany where the same rules apply and is one of the busiest motorways in Europe.
If the rest of Europe has proved it works then I think it is time for us to adopt it Read more

it a humourous one.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure of what you're referring to; I don't recall having quoted or commented on one of your posts ?
I have 5 litres of Halfords 5W40 turbo diesel oil which I was going to use in a previouos car. The oil is only rated at VW505.01 and has no ACEA specs on the container. I need B3 or B4 quality. My local garage mechanic recons that the Vw spec is at least this quality but these common rail motors are too expensive to fix to take any risks. Does anyone know if it is safe or should I get rid of it? Thanks.

I'm going to take the advice here and get some B4 standard diesel oil. I'll use the other stuff for topping up with over the next year or so and put the rest into my motor mower.

Enjoy it !
