is there more than one water temperature sender?
does the sender control the autochoke? daughter has a "poor starter" which chugs and vibrates, and has a habit of cutting out, a "mechanic" says fault is sender, water temp gauge isnt working, could it be the sender?
cheers

This model has 2 sender units. One for the temp gauge and one for the fuel injection system. It is very possible that the temp gauge sensor is faulty causing the needle not to move, however it is very unlikely that the efi sensor is faulty causing the poor start condition.A more in depth investigation needs to be carried out for this fault, even the possibilty of incorrect engine oil.hth

i told her to put the wire to ground and switch the ignition on to prove the guage and maybe disprove the sender, she said "oh, when i switch on, the temp gauge goes over to the red and back to zero again and doesnt move.."
im 10 miles away, she asks if she should drive it........grrrr kids......
and now she says the radiator fan switch/senser is wired across and the fans running all the time
do i sense a pig in a poke here?.....

does a 1.6 zetec engine have efi, and does efi have an auto-choke?......

A pig in a poke - oh, yes.
EFi - yes. Cold-start enrichment - yes.
A rad switch - on a '97??
Don't short the 2-pin sensor to ground - it causes smoke emissions from the ECU.

update....
she rang me "someones changed the radiator, theres no fan switch on this, may need a rad"
2 hours later
"er, mechanic found the fan switch/sensor on the rad, its faulty"
me - "did he take it off and test it?"
she - "dunno, i sat in the car cos it was cold, £20 to fit a new one"
me - "you had a new water temp sender, does the gauge work now?"
she - "no, theres a faulty wire to the ecu efi thingy"
im slowly losing the will to live now
shes had 4 new spark plugs, it starts/runs ok, doesnt overheat so thats something i suppose...
kids+cars.....was i ever this bad?

Kids, cars - and a total numpty of a mechanic. There's little hope for you.

Shorting the sender to ground is a dumb thing to tell her to do. It's probale either bust the ECU or the gauge. We stopped doing this in the early nineties. Regards Peter
