Never had much grief with these. The 2009ish model which I assume we're talking about there is generally as reliable as anything else and probably better than the German stuff.

Never found too much trouble with electrics either - much better than previous model. ...

VW in trouble again! why is it when something like this happens in America they
all seem to be informed straight away as a legal right whereas here it is leaked out
in dribs and drabs an very few are entitled to anything in case it upsets the car
manufacture from whatever country they may be from. Read more

DVSA should have had the balls & the power to stop VAG from selling or registering any cars with this known seat belt fault, that would have concentrated VAG on fixing them quickly.

Will the DVSA stop any affected & unrepaired cars from gaining there first MOT certificate once they hit 3 years old? I very much doubt it.

Safety recalls should be tied in to the MOT system, outstanding manufacturer recall should mean NO MOT pass certificate until its recalled & repaired.

For the Ford anti-corrosion warranty to be valid, do you need to get the car serviced by a dealer (or be able to prove it's been serviced to the same standard) or do you just need to get the paint inspections done? It doesn't seem clear from the service book whether servicing by a dealer in necessary for the anti-corrosion warranty or whether that's just a requirement for the base warranty. Read more

All such 'warranties' are basically insurance policies of which the 'premium' consists of an annual payment to the ste@lership. New car buyers are almost always tied into this, often with the inducement of 'free' inspection or even servicing for a short time (the premium is built into the purchase price). Such owners will rarely keep the car longer than a few years during which time it is highly unlikely a problem will manifest itself. If it does, the 'insurer' will try their best to wriggle out of payment or remedial work. Cars these days should last well over ten years before any significant corrosion appears if they are given a reasonable amount of care and attention. So far, our 18yr old 134,000m Focus has required a mere £100's worth of welding at a known weak spot at the rear wheel arch where corrosion had invisibly crept under the plasticised protection - nearly two years ago. I have attended to minor rusting at the seams along the bottom of the doors myself with no more than a screw driver, a bit of sand paper, a small bottle of Kurust and a can of paint from Wilcos.

On Wednesday my Yaris totally died on the M6 in the wet.

It's done it a few times in VERY WET motorway driving that it has stumbled and lost power (felt like fuel starvation but hard cuts, proper jerking) ECU light on and then it's fixed itself. Couldn't get to the bottom of it but suspected it was water getting in and interfering electrically somewhere.... Read more

As the problem is related to it raining each time, check water hasn't got into the ECU itself or the main ECU plug.

Some cars suffer if the drainage from the rainwater scuttle in front of the screen gets blocked. Don't know about the Yaris tho.

With regard to progress of car design over the years, I remember seeing a comparison between the original Range Rover and a modern one.

Roughly speaking the new car was about a tonne heavier but had more than double the power, half the time to 60, was 30 mph faster and used half as much fuel.

My mothers Ka won't fire up. It has been standing for 9months in her dry garage. It has had a battery conditioner connected to maintain the battery. It started and ran perfectly 9 months previously. It now cranks over on the starter healthily but no signs of life at all. There is plenty of fuel in the tank. Any suggestions on likely causes and how to diagnose/check it out please Read more

Hi all,

My first ever car with an auto gearbox is a 2015 Lexus CT200h.

I’m after some best practice advice on the following subjects:

***Should I drop it into ‘N’ at the traffic lights or should I hold it in ‘D’ and keep the brakes on until the lights change to green?

***I’ve not been bothering to put the (foot operated) handbrake on when parked, I’ve just left it in ‘P’. Good or bad? All of my parking is on flat ground at home and at work.

***If I do put the handbrake on when parked, is there a best practice sequence to this? Eg, brake to a halt, apply handbrake, select ‘P’ or some other sequence of doing this?

***Is there a best practice driving off sequence after parking up?

Thanks all for your info! Read more

V4 Heaven

Thanks all for the info so far.

The handbook isn’t very specific, as in “you must” or “you must not”.

I will be using the handbrake more often when parked to save the ‘P’ and, therefore, the transmission from taking all the strain.

Brother in law has just taken delivery today of this for all of us to use when in Amman. Looks awfully like an updated Juke to me.
