December 2018
Just an update, if anybody is planning to drive to and/or across France in the immediate future, be aware that the yellow jacket( Gilets Jaunes) protest movement have published plans on FB to close the country down on the 10th of December if their demands are not met.
Fuel stations are short of fuel right now due to blockades of refineries and distribution depots, this will probably get worse. ... Read more

"Documents like these help criminals and terrorists evade justice."
Possibly not. Why believe these people can actually provide convincing fakes? It may be a gigantic con trick.
When real mpg figures are submitted to Honest John, are these the figures that your car's dashboard says or tankful to tankful calculations? My present car and the last one both say about 4mpg higher than the actual figure.
It seems that not only do we have advertised mpg which is too high but yet another tier of lies on the car dashboad! Read more
I think you misunderstood the post you quoted. However, in the case of my VW Polo 2018, the mpg stabilised after about 2,000 miles, it was quite a bit lower (about 3 mpg) after only 1,000 miles. However, weather conditions especially temperature significantly affect the results, so it's hard to be sure.
Hopefully this is the right place for advice.
I bought a Grand Scenic on Wednesday 28th November and paid using my credit card. On the test drive the air con made a whistling noise and there was some vibration when I hit about 75 mph. Apart from these issues the car seemed to be ok for its age and mileage, the MOT history and extensive collection of receipts and regular servicing gave me confidence that I was buying a decent honest car.
When I sat down for a chat with the salesman (nice lad) to negotiate the sale, I said I would be happy with the car if they done the wheel balancing and had a look at the air conditioning and if they reduced the price by £300 since it had never had the timing belt replaced: the car is 7 years old and has done 104k Miles. He agreed to this after a chat with the owner of the dealership.
He then produced a waiver form I had to sign that said that any faults that arise they wouldn’t be liable for. He said because they were knocking off some money they would have to treat it as a trade sale.
I returned the day after to collect the vehicle and the wheel balancing and air con hadn’t been dealt with.
I made the 22 mile trip home and parked the car on my driveway where it has been ever since.
On Sunday after 2 days of heavy rain I had a look in the car and the driver side floor cubby hole was full of water. I’ve since discovered that water ingress is a common problem with renaults.
Where do I stand legally? Surely the dealer has sold me a car that’s not fit for purpose and is dangerous to drive.

Could there be a relay in the system? I'd imagine its a very high current circuit to not have one.
Might be easier to switch it on and use a multimeter to check voltage on rear screen - check on positive feed in and earth on boot lid and this will tell you if power is getting there.
My 55 reg plate 1.4L petrol 206 seems to have a dodgy gear box. It feels looser than the cars ive driven before, and sometimes I'll attempt to put it in fourth only for it to snap back into neutral. Ithink this has happened in a couple of other gears too, but im not certain
My first instinct was to blame myself and assume I'm being too soft with the gears, and that I just need to get used to it. However, this has never happened before in any other car and I'm very ignorant regarding mechanical issues andI'm worried that it could be the sign of a big problem that will only get worse if I don't get it looked at ASAP. ... The car passed an MOT a month ago with no advisories on the gears or clutch and I've only driven it 5 times since.
Gearboxes and clutches are not tested on the MOT. The test is for safety items....
Who has seen a police car in the morning,or evening for that matter? I cannot recall seeing one driving around looking for motoring errors.
I presume they get their contacts from crashes or tip offs from people who are worried by a driver getting into a car after a night in the pub. Not many tip off in the morning. As usual the advice is drive sensibly and avoid other loonies to keep out the focus of the old bill.
And make sure you leave one hour for you body to process one unit of alcohol. Not too complicated an equation .

My only advice is that if you are worried about the possibility of being over the limit the following morning, is to buy a quality personal breathalyser. I use a recommended unit and have it recalibrated each year. There are plenty of tests out there with recommendations to take your pick.
Other than staying tea total, this is the only suitable alternative.
useful for an update on progress but not there for me yet and very pricey. Read more

Hi,
Unfortunately, I've just been involved in a small bump. I'm trying to work out whether to claim on my insurance, based on the likelihood of who they will believe is in the wrong.
I've included a diagram below of the crash.

Any help / opinions would be appreciated.

Sounds like a job for insurance after all, it isn't clear cut but as one of the parties has already made it clear that he/she is entirely innocent i don't think there is much point in pursuing a reasonable 'pay yer own' resolution, they may well end up worse off than being reasonable about a minor prang where blame isn't obvious.
This is why you pay insurance, and don't lose that witnesses details.
Hi guys, advice needed. Recently car started to make grinding noises in the rear when coming to a stop. Went to my local garage, they said they'd look at the brakes for me (the car passed mot with them a couple weeks before with no advisories). After checking they said they couldn't find anything wrong and that they cleaned them. Paid £40. Car still making same noises. Went back and the guy reassured me again everything's ok and it could be due to cold (?) but said something about rear shoes, I didn't quite understand (I generally find him hard to understand). Should I go back and demand my money or fix? How can they say nothing's wrong if there plainly is?

I do most of that except the shoe roughening (scared of brake dust, though I suppose done wet it'd be ok), the coppaslip (unobtainium here, I use home-made aluminium-based stuff) and the brake cleaner (never seen the point of it, though I have some).
To get rid of dust I wash the brakes down with copious (optionally hot) water and washing up liquid, catching the dirty water in a bowl and tipping it directly down a street drain....

Which was why you helpfully started the thread in the first place, intending a connection with motoring.
There's nothing wrong with a bit of thread drift, but this one is much more useful and informative if it sticks to what's going on in France....
