I'm going to look at one this afternoon with a view to parting company with the diesel corsa and migrating back to petrol. Mainly as the price difference is quite noticeable and as I do the majority of short town runs it won't have the EGR/DPF troubles of the newer diesels.
My mileage is dropping to around 16 - 17k per annum so I feel that now would be the time to return to petrol power. Any potential savings on fuel would be offset by the servicing as I believe the intervals on the SX4 are around 10k. I would be doing a small service at this time of year and the major one in June as the MOT is up in July... Read more
Hi everyone!
I'm going to buy a new car soon, so I'd like you to share your opinion on the following matter: what is better - a 5 years old Nissan Qashkai or a 10 year old BMW X5?... Read more
OK, so it’s a given that Land Rover don’t have the best reputation iro quality and reliability. Using that as a benchmark my friend and neighbour replaced his X5 with a new Disco. The Disco has proven to be a paragon compared to his X5. None of the X5 problems were cheap.
Sorry but your statement means nothing.. Was the X5 new, serviced on time or 10 years old and neglected? How long did he own it? How long has he owned the Disco?
Without that information, for all I know you could be comparing a 10 year old X5 owned for 3 years - and hence bought secondhand with a three year old Disco bought new....
Despite Vauxhall's somewhat misleading adverts about how British they are, the fact is that excepting British built Astra and the vans these are simply another imported car.
What a shame that Vauxhall do not return manufacturing to the UK so that they are really 'Drool Britannia' as their advert says Read more
I can speak with some knowledge having had various marques of the Astra since 1996. My latest Astra ( a current model having a 1.4 Turbo producing 148 bhp ) is the best that I have ever owned but none of them has given me more than minor problems. I buy my cars from an independent dealer and are usually just over a year old. There is a lot of snobbishness about not buying a Vauxhall but my experience has been positive. I think one reason why Vauxhall's are not valued has been the policy of heavy discounting which makes people think that they are not worth much. A good reason to buy a year old one which will have had the biggest hit taken by someone else.
Yes it is a shame that few cars ( any? ) are truly British but how British do you consider Ford to be ?
fan set on 4 setting blows very gentle fan made a noise , now, no air blowing , seems to be intermittent problems. Read more

I need to decide between 2 car;
2003 Toyota Corolla HB which is 1.6 vvti petrol, 83.000 miles.
2007 Mazda 6 which is 2.0 petrol, 115.000 miles.
which one is more reliable? I need a problem free car. reliability is the most important criteria.
and then, mpg is also important. I will use generally for short distance.
will there be more difference on mpg?
I'm afraid of Mazda 2.0's fuel consumption. :)... Read more
Agree with everything said so far, although I'd be nervous about rust.. especially on the Mazda around the rear wheel arches, they did have a problem with that, so I'd say the Toyota isighe choice in this case, better mpg, better built. The only caveat would be to check the emissions (MOT) report on the Toyota, as earlier models could burn oil - a lot! Look for HC in ppm of <50.
The OP bought the Corolla, as can be seen by his post on the 12th.
On Saturday night I was driving my car and it started smoking I drove through a puddle so I thought t was the heat from my breaks being warm and the water being cold. There was a smell of burning through the car but no engine lights came on. I checked the oil and coolant etc that night and everything was abolsutley fine. I didn't use the car on Sunday and my partner was driving it on Monday. As he's going in to second gear sometimes the car just cuts out all of the lights go out and the car just stops as if it has been stalled but it hasn't. There is no engine lights we've ran a diagnostics through it but there's nothing showing up. It's a 2011 corsa 1.4 (it's the higher of the 1.4 I can't remember the cc exactly). I was wondering if anyone could give me any idea of what it might be before it goes into the garage. Read more

I would be looking at the old favourite simple things first - battery positive connections and negatives to body and engine block clean and tight before getting into complicated stuff.

Hi everyone,
I currently drive a Mazda 3 sports nav 2.2 litre diesel.
I love the car, but want something smaller and automatic.
I would have switched to Mazda 2, but can’t get the combination of engine and extras I’m after (I’ve got used to them all now!!!)
So... any ideas on a Mazda 2 sized car that has an automatic transmission that still packs some punch, but also has rear parking camera, heated seats, sat nav, electric rear windows?
I’ve been googling until I’m blue in the face. Can find larger cars with the spec and engine, but all the smaller ones seem to be have engines that do 0-60 in about an hour, or don’t have / let you add things like rear parking camera.
Am I looking for the impossible? Read more
^^^ All useful stuff from Kevin P .... thanks.
Hi all,
I'm trying to remove the cylinder head cover/manifold but I cannot find how to loosen off or remove the high pressure fuel pipes from the back of the cylinder head. Loosened off and disconnected from the injectors but I'm a bit lost as to what has the best way to move them out of the way to lift the manifold. Just seems to be no easy or straightforward way!... Have you looked on Utube?
there's quite a few video tutorials on manifolds there.

Yes I have a 1.4t Vitara S. Very happy with it. I looked at the SCross but it came with a sunroof that took too much headroom for me. No sunroof on the Vitara and as you said they are pretty much in the same sector. Though the trade considers the S cross to be a Quashqai alternative and the Vitara the Juke. Cannot see why myself. Anyway I concur Suzuki mechanicals if looked after seem bulletproof. That SCross seems to be a good buy imo. Oh the indicated mog being 5pct less actual...good rule of thumb.
