Background to this seeming mini-epic is that my daughter has a little 1 litre, 04 plate, 52000 mile Corsa that she's kept in lovely condition. Just been for an MOT and its failed on a lit SRS/Airbag warning light. Couple of other little easily sorted niggles but we were told we'd need a proper specialist to sort the warning light.
Duly took it along to main dealer service outfit for a run on the diagnostics box and we have an error code for the passenger seatbelt pretensioner and another for the airbag ECU. Plus a parts-only quote for 700 quid for the necessary bits. Ringing around the independent Vauxhall outfits and those sharing Opel lineage (around Reading) and no-one seems interested in quoting for the work to fix, or, be willing to fit parts I can source myself. Even a few back street mechanics of my aquaintance dont seem willing to entertain the job stating a lack of the proper tooling to tackle the work.... Read more

That advice fits with what I'd read online about most of these airbag light faults. Was surprised no-one seemed to want to take the money to at least determine whether it was an easy fix like that. Got an auto electrician heading to her to follow up on advice given....
My 1.4 petrol Fusion is using about a litre of oil every 500 miles. There are no leaks, there is no oil in the coolant and there is no smoke coming out of the exhaust. The car has done 105k miles. Anyone any ideas? Read more
That sounds likely. It failed it's mot on the first try on emissions. A bottle of cataclean, a clean airfilter and a new lambda sensor got it through a retest. Now would be a good time to search autotrader I think lol.
Thanks all.
Something to grate all regular users of the Dartford Crossing (M25 Kent - Essex area)
Effective 1st October, the discount for cars is being reduced. No other prices are changing. The standard rate is £2.50 per crossing, discounted to £1.67 ... after October to be £2.00. It's not much, but still grates to know that the price of a crossing is going to be more, yet the delays and queues seem to get longer. Still no mention of abolished charges if the wait is longer than a predetermined length of time (I won't hold my breath) or start date for build of relief crossing further along the Thames.... I have an account, not for the discount, but for the "Pleasure" of not having to worry about if i have paid or not. This week I had friends who travelled from Dover to see us and I just added their registration to my account.
If there was no discount i would still have a prepay account...
I made the mistake of purchasing an overpriced Suzuki Grand Vitara (on a 2009 plate) thinking that I'll avoid any mechanical issues, due to buying from a dealer rather than going for a cheaper version privately etc. The car was sold with full history and a years MOT, with no advisory warnings showing.

"I'm a consultant.....This has been a learning curve but I think it is important that cowboys in the trade are named and shamed and I'm sure that majority of people would agree that this is progressive action."
I'm not sure what 'progressive action' is consultant-speak for, but what you've been doing is hardly progressive....
Hi
I have to buy a vacuum cleaner for my garage because my old one is broken. It should not cost too much, because actually no vacuum cleaner was additionally planned. I think 200$ would be ok.... Read more
Try a forum in a country that uses the US$, might have more success? Here in the UK we price in £ Sterling and shipping from here would be costly anyway....
Need a full replacement set of tyres. Previously we always used Bridgestone Potenza RE040 AZ 185/55/15/V, which is what the car originally came with, but it seems Bridgestone no longer make these at this spec.
Can anyone recommend a good similar alternative? Read more
That is what i bought for my last van. When buying i do generally go for all season tyres. My current van, the Caddy, came with winter tyres fitted, these are also Michelins (Alpin, i think)....
Good morning all,
I'm after a little advice. I do around 33k miles per year and drive a 61 plate VW Jetta (Bluemotion), which is giving me around 59mpg. Most of the mileage I do is motorway driving. While the car itself has been fine for the last two years (It was bought at a time when I needed something more efficient than a petrol Ford Focus - I changed jobs which quintupled my commute) I'm looking for something a little more comfortable/luxurious.... I would suggest a Passat in GT spec. Great trim level and equipment levels. Very good refinement aswell plenty out there!
Seems underbonnet fire extinguisher systems should be included as standard on current BMW's with the 2.0 diesel engines. Lke the US (re VW diesel emissions scandal) and unlike the UK, South Korea take this kind of thing seriously, and in favour of their people.

Can cyclists also be required to undergo a test to prove their competence and a safety check of their bike to ensure it's fit for use on the road please? Read more
Easy there, tiger! Getting angry about some mild (and well deserved) ribbing about poorly thought out and truly bizarre suggestions is saying a lot about you ie you find it insulting that your theories should be questioned and are resorting to flinging mud rather than actually tackling the issue in question.
And that issue is the accountability of cyclists, which you think requires cyclists to wear hiviz bibs. No country in the world has this rule. So you dismiss the entire rest of the world as irrelevant. No-one in the UK is campaigning for cyclists to wear hiviz vests with ID. Yet you still think it's a good idea. You really, really need to take a look at your thought processes, skills of analysis etc! Forming an opinion and then dismissing anything that doesn't support your view is beneath you, surely? But maybe not!
You still claim that cyclists are somehow immune from prosecution yet admit that the police do actually catch people who commit crimes and are not wearing anything which lists their address details. Again, truly bizarre how you can't see the contradiction in your arguments!
Your examples with horses again show you up. Every accident/incident on the roads is the responsibility of all parties involved. If you learned nothing about your own actions and your own responsibilities from this incident with the horse then you are destined to repeat the same mistakes.
And when did I dismiss your friend's injury? I was merely pointing out the above - responsibility is shared. That's why the police take statements from all parties, investigate accidents independently etc. Or don't you believe people should be accountable for their own actions? Would seem a strange position to take considering your previous ideas!
As for your parting shot, that about says it all - I question your ideas and you respond with indignation and anger. How dare I do that! And you finish off with the last resort of the online expert - "I will not read your reply, this conversation is over" etc. But you just have read this, of course!
Anyway, road safety experts are generally a level-headed bunch who research things properly and learn from the past. Obviously they make mistakes like everyone else but they generally don't recommend actions without looking into things thoroughly. Hiviz ID vests for cyclists? I'm sure that will make even such a serious bunch break into a smile!

It would be interesting to know if a car like the Mercedes with 10 speeds 'block changes' in some circumstances. It's one thing having a larger number of close ratios to optimise the overall reduction in any situation, quite another to step through all the gears up and down.
Presumably the highest gears will be very long. There's absolutely no point changing down one gear when the driver lifts off downhill or brakes for a bend....
