Warmer temperatures are advantageous for non hybrid cars too, as they get up to operating temperature faster, and the air is less dense.

Been reading the July issue of Classic American magazine and there is a Cadillac theme running through it. One article details some of the features/inventions/innovations which were debuted on Cadillacs throughout the company. Some remarkable stuff (for the time), including things which decades later, are only just starting to become common on run of the mill cars.

1908, The 'Dewar trophy'. Cadillac founder Henry M Leyland started off making muskets during the American Civil War. He found that by machining every part to an identical standard, quality could be guaranteed and assembly would be quicker. He took this philosophy to car manufacture. So in 1908, three 10hp Cadillac's were shipped to England, and brought to the Brooklands circuit. There they were disassembled, the parts mixed up and the cars then rebuilt before setting off on (successful) a 500 mile trial. For this, the RAC awarded its Dewar trophy, an award given to 'Outstanding technical achievement'.... Read more

It's interesting to compare the Caddy with the contemporary Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III, which had been recently upgraded with the Rolls V8 engine. The Cadillac cost £3,700 inc purchase tax (about £74,000 today), whereas the Rolls was 50% more expensive at £5,500 (£110,000).

Hi. I have an old estate being used like a van, the back seats are never used by passengers instead they carry gear and materials, accordingly at least one rear seatbelt is wrecked, another is borderline.

I don't want to replace the belts if I can help it, just get damaged again... Read more

My car goes in every year without the third row of seats in place, no problem.

SWMBO used to use her little C2 as a van, again no problems, just rear seat not present noted on the test result.

Hello All,

We're looking to purchase a Mercedes Sprinter and have seen one which we're interested in. After a thorough inspection yesterday we've picked up on a few issues - back door catch broken off, side door doesn't lock, radio screen isn't working and what looks like some leaking oil underneath (I don't think I can attach pictures in this forum?). The dealer has good reviews and has said they'll fix all the issues. We asked the dealer about the previous owner and it was Enterprise Rent-A-Car. What do you guys reckon, would you buy it?... Gut instinct says an ex-hire with a few issues might not be a good bet for the future, especially as we've stretched our budget to get as new/low milage van as we can afford so it'll last us many years to come.

Your info suggests to me that the rental firm has moved the van on at a 3-year/80K mile point, on the assumption that maintenance will start to cost. You must choose whether to take that risk....

Hi,

- I am after a petrol executive brand family sized car/estate or golf sized estate from september 2009 (59) to August 2014 that has true real combined mpg of around 40+mpg.

- timing/cambelt is chain.

- Is common and is seen a lot on the roads.

- foldable rear seats

What are the cheapest picks available or what prices am I looking at for this in the used market? Read more

One other small point, why would anyone go to the expense of importing what was a dreadful and unloved car. Some far east imports made sense but a Isuzu with Honda badges, give over.

What a lovely phrase "give over" is! It seems to be a gentle way of saying "stop" without causing offense. I don't think I've ever seen it written down before....

In response to FMS's emissions database query, I wonder how the various European governments are able to allocate the correct emissins vignette to every car owner who applies? They must each have some kind of database, which shows it is do-able. Read more

Carfueldata works for my 2001 Golf, which is correctly identified as Euro 4 compliant. Unlike Transport for London, who blanket categorise cars by date of manufacture for the T-Charge and ULEZ charge.

Good grief. A near 6 year old Golf with 14k on the clock and someone wants to trade it for another brand new car that will only do just over 2000 miles every year!? Are some people mad?

The 'new' car will depreciate massively. Save the money and keep it to pay for any 'issues' the 6 year old low mileage Golf may encounter. Read more

Can’t believe you’re recommending a Peugeot Rifter van-derived MPV for a Mercedes C-Class owner. He specifically asked for something “not too bulky”. He’d likely prefer a Volvo XC40, a Honda HR-V, or (offbeat choice) a Kia Soul.
