Can cyclists also be required to undergo a test to prove their competence and a safety check of their bike to ensure it's fit for use on the road please? Read more

Easy there, tiger! Getting angry about some mild (and well deserved) ribbing about poorly thought out and truly bizarre suggestions is saying a lot about you ie you find it insulting that your theories should be questioned and are resorting to flinging mud rather than actually tackling the issue in question.

And that issue is the accountability of cyclists, which you think requires cyclists to wear hiviz bibs. No country in the world has this rule. So you dismiss the entire rest of the world as irrelevant. No-one in the UK is campaigning for cyclists to wear hiviz vests with ID. Yet you still think it's a good idea. You really, really need to take a look at your thought processes, skills of analysis etc! Forming an opinion and then dismissing anything that doesn't support your view is beneath you, surely? But maybe not!

You still claim that cyclists are somehow immune from prosecution yet admit that the police do actually catch people who commit crimes and are not wearing anything which lists their address details. Again, truly bizarre how you can't see the contradiction in your arguments!

Your examples with horses again show you up. Every accident/incident on the roads is the responsibility of all parties involved. If you learned nothing about your own actions and your own responsibilities from this incident with the horse then you are destined to repeat the same mistakes.

And when did I dismiss your friend's injury? I was merely pointing out the above - responsibility is shared. That's why the police take statements from all parties, investigate accidents independently etc. Or don't you believe people should be accountable for their own actions? Would seem a strange position to take considering your previous ideas!

As for your parting shot, that about says it all - I question your ideas and you respond with indignation and anger. How dare I do that! And you finish off with the last resort of the online expert - "I will not read your reply, this conversation is over" etc. But you just have read this, of course!

Anyway, road safety experts are generally a level-headed bunch who research things properly and learn from the past. Obviously they make mistakes like everyone else but they generally don't recommend actions without looking into things thoroughly. Hiviz ID vests for cyclists? I'm sure that will make even such a serious bunch break into a smile!

What a load of codswallop. Nickle/Cadmium (Ni/Cad) rechargeable batteries have been around for years, mainly superseded by NiMH (Nickle Metal Hydride) and probably even more efficient batteries as technology advances. Anything is probably poisonous or cancer causing if you eat enough of it or indulge in great big sniffs of any emissions and I suppose there some really stupid people about. It gives carte blanche to the so-called "Safety Experts" who will make a killing with outrageous charges like they have done with Asbestos scam. What statistics are available showing how many people have died already as a direct result of cadmium who would have died from other causes any way like smoking or inhaling brake dust? At least it's a German car and VW don't need any more bad news after the emission uproar. Wait for the Trolls!!!

With the increasing use of on-line Gov processes, even if a 99% guarenteed uptime that leaves about 4 days in any year, will this be taken into consideration if something is not filed within a statutory period? Probably not Read more

This whole concept of our non ability to transfer VED to a new owner should be stopped. The excise mob are ripping us motorists off for millions. I sold my car on 1-4-18 which was a bank holiday weekend and could not contact the DVLA on line or any other way. I pay my tax monthly by D/D and as such was charged for April in full and the new owner also paid for April. I complained to the VED mob and they just told me there would be no refund. Pure daylight robbery ! Why should we have to put up with such shoddy treatment from our faceless bureaucracy ?!!

Hi, I live in Portugal and all cars here are very expensive,, and 95% of cars here are diesel.

I only do about 10000kms a year so diesel problems are sure to occur. I thought about an Ampera but I'm not sure if the spares are still readily available or going to be very hard to source. Has anyone had any problems with getting routine parts or any problems at all with the cars,i.e are they reliable.... Read more

I would recommend visiting the Speak EV forums as they have a special forum for Volt / Ampera owners: www.speakev.com/categories/general-motors-ev-forum.../

The Ampera was a very clever car, it was launched a few years too early, really.

hi all, my exhaust scrapes speed humps, even if i go slowly, is there a shorter version of the rubber bung which it hangs off of, so i could raise it by half inch or so?

Also is a front shock change, a big job? Any special tools?... Read more

I have ordered a shock,

Just one? if so not a good idea. They need replacing in pairs or preferably in full sets. Odd shocks are not a recipee for a safe car.

i posted about my ongoing problem with a delaminating SLK roof. Turns out this is q common. In fact in 2013 the material for the roof was changedto address the issue. Seems the hot sun forces the plastic material to expand sideways creating enough force to bow the roof at the back. The SLK world forum is full of instances of this problem. I have informed HJ of the site and re contacted Mercedes customer care. Their last stance was the car is almost six years old....time I first got in touch...so tough. I asked if Mercedes cars were expected to come apart at 6 years old. Mercedes say the only fix is a new roof, presumably that would be of the new material Read more

I changed the SLK last year, the roof was driving me nuts. Apparently after 2012 the roof material was changed, There was lots of problems las with my car roof that MB kept quiet. Their customer service is intransigent and sometimes quite rude in my experience. I got a decent p ex allowance for it in fairness from the place I bought it from even though they were aware of the roof problem.

Heading south on a dual carriageway section of the A1 recently, I was put in the unfortunate position of being completely surrounded by traffic whilst one HGV took a literate ten minutes to overtake another HGV. Fortunately, I didn't need to exit the carriageway any time soon, but it certainly got me thinking what the hell I would have done if I had needed to. It's just as well an emergency vehicle wasn't behind me.

Surely this kind of driving is illegal? At the least, it has to be inconsiderate. Read more

John F is quite right, i do know how to deal with being hung out (good turn of phrase that Galileo), but i'll be interested to see how thousands of car and white van drivers cope with having to do this themselves, when every one else is limited the same...only they arn't limited quite the same and this is where the elephant racing gets going, limiters will apply differently, more so on a car without a caibrated speeedo, tyres wear and when you're stuck at 68.9mph you too will find a line of cars nose to tail at 69.6 mph either side of you and NO, no one wants to give way nor does anyone take any notice of indicators any more.

Enjoy when it's your turn, the practice is not quite the same as the theory..:-)...
