We constantly read of problems with certain brands on this site, particularly from Germany. Assuming they still have "Lemon Law" in The USA, is it possible that we pay more for an inferior product in the UK/ Read more

Last time I saw the quality league table for VAG cars built on the same platform and engines Top quality was Skoda then Audi then VW then a Seat. Is that still the case ?

Its all subjective - often down to the expectations of the car owner (VW or Audi owners would expect higher build quality than Skoda/SEAT ones, well, except discerning owners like us who know there's little if any difference in engineering quality), the factory its built at (more how its managed and the attitude of its staff as most from the same brand have the same equipment) and the quality of customer care.

The other main factor is how the car owner treats their car - if a marque attracts an older, more risk-averse, responsible owner who goes above and beyond in looking after and drving their car sympathetically, then its likely that that car will be more reliable and last longer. This includes them, to a degree, wanting to keep the car for a long time from new, rather than changing it every 2-3 years before the warranty runs out. Even, especially with VAG, the the level to which owners buy models equipped with parts with known problems, just as the lower powered dry clutch DSG boxes - I bet a far higher proportion of them are sold in VWs than Skodas, who are perhaps more likely to buy a manual. The Audis, being generally higher powered, use the more reliable wet clutch DSG type systems....

Ré Honda CR-V,

Tthe ride is OK, but the seats arent for everyone; my sister has a bad back and loves hers, but when I drive it, I find the lumbar support is all wrong (I am tall), and it gives me back-ache, no matter how I adjust it.

Engine is deffo "Go Louder", rather than "Go Faster".

i have some spare original wheel trims that have a few kerb scratches on them. They are too good to just chuck but I can't justify spending a fortune on primer, paint and clear coat. Any cheap light silver paint recommendations would be appreciated.

I will only attend to the light damage on the edges not the entire wheel trims. I shall put them on only when i lend my car to others and possibly mid winter.... Read more

Perhaps you could answer a question?
There is a big issue these days over car emissions, however, am i correct in thinking that remapping can virtually eliminate bad emissions, particularly on Diesel engines, and if so, why isn't this done legally to help with the issue? Read more

what a stupid un-enforceable law.

My car has start stop. its a simple start stop system that stops the engine when the car stops moving but after a couple of minutes will start the engine again but then does not turn the engine off again until I have moved a small distance (changing back in to neutral and then its active again).

i.e. stop start only works once until the car moves again.

So I would get a fine if the start stop system is working but started the engine again (whilst parked in neutral).

This law is a flawed concept.

Oh and my car... it's an 18 reg car. ITS b***** BRAND NEW

But sometimes reading the policy does not actually help!

My policy says:
"Loss and Damage section (relating to what is not covered).:
Any loss or damage to your car if:
• your car is unlocked; or
• your car windows or sunroof are open; or
• your car removable roof panel, convertible roof or hood is not fitted and secured in the upright position on your car at the time of loss, or
• your car has been left unattended and unlocked with the car keys in or on the vehicle."

Notice all of these are separate conditions (the "or"s), so a lay reading says you have no cover if your windows are open!

So if you are driving along on a warm day with your windows open you are not covered and therefore committing a criminal offence.

My broker agrees with this reading but the insurance company just says "don't worry, we will review the wording when we next update the policy documentation in a few years"!
