Bit hard for me to describe this without using a photo - but I'll try:

A straight piece of plastic trim that runs along the width of the car, curved inwards at both ends came loose and fell off. It was directly under the front body panel bumber, with the curved ends connecting the bottom front of one wheel arch to the other. You can see these pieces on other cars - they're the bits that get scraped when you go over a speed hump! ... Read more

they're poor efforts at the best of times,

The one on my VW Up was thin plastic, but VW charged IIRC £150 for the replacements + fitting!

That crit air site you have linked to charges €30 for a crit air sticker! please link only to the French government website where a crit air sticker costs €3 instead. Don't link to scammers! Read more

Useful information and I've used www.certificat-air.gouv.fr/en/ to buy mine although you have to scan your v5 at low res to make it fit in the file size limits.

One to note - a cheap way to buy the GERMAN environmental zone sticker is from www.berlin.de/labo/mobilitaet/kfz-zulassung/feinst...p

The time has come for my 22yr old son to run his own car due to starting a post degree new job. For the moment he will take on my owned from new 17 year old 126k miles Skoda Octavia that has been well maintained and is MOt'd until March but I'm not sure it will make it through the new test next year (EML issue - caused possibly by EGR etc - not affecting running or economy & minor oil leak)... Thanks for all the replies

Re "One of the previous VW bosses, i think it was Ferdinand Piech, was extremely tall, at least 6'5" if memory serves, he would ensure that he could comfortably sit in and drive each new model, "...

Warning light says 'possibly seat belt tensioners or air bags.. Investigation at main dealer where car came from indicates no fault in these items, but the gubbins behind the steering column needs replacing. Thank you very much that will be not much short of £500. I sulked about this at first, then asked around but couldn't find anyone who had had this fault.
As the car came new from this dealer is not 4 years old and has just over 30k registered miles should I be asking for a contribution and if so from whom?
Thank you for any advice

Try a local auto electrician who just might have some way of sorting for less than £500.

I have a new VW Polo with CarPlay. I find that it gets into a state whereby the infotainment system reboots every five minutes and each time I need to press two ‘buttons’ to get back to playing music from my iPhone 7. Soft resetting the iPhone cures it for a few hours, then it starts crashing again. Does anyone have experience of this?

One might argue that the fault is with the iPhone, but it could be the VW software behaving badly when communicating with the iPhone that causes the iPhone CarPlay server to go AWOL. Read more

Back in 2009, I bought a Toyota Hiace diesel campervan to which I fitted a misfuelling prevention device. After a discussion here in the Back Room, I chose an RAC FuelSure for about £25.

It worked brilliantly until a mechanic broke it last week when he needed to add fuel from a jerrycan and was too lazy to phone me to ask how to remove it. So he simply broke it apart. Grrrrr. (Yes, the mechanic has indeed been sent to a hard labour camp in northern Siberia. Along with his entire extended family).

Anyway, I now need a new prevention device. My 4WD van is now over 20 years old, but it still drives me in comfort to wonderful places and is worth about as much as I paid for it, so I wanna look after it.

The FuelSure is no longer available, and nor are any of the devices listed in an Ask HJ from 2011

As far as I can see, the only misfuelling prevention device currently on sale is the Diesel Head as used on a 2013 HJ long-term test of a Hyundai i30.

The Diesel Head seems up to the job, but it costs a rather ouch £45. Does anyone know of any alternatives? I am only interested in those which actually prevent misfuelling. No warning devices. Read more

Brake was between the front seats.

I'm a named driver on the bosses van.

I got 3 points in march for speeding through a traffic light camera (on green) that had sneekily been upgraded to clock speeding.
So 55 on a 40 dual carriageway to which I took the 3 points and a fine as a lesson learnt.

I do about 1000 miles per week most of which is motorways and I now use the van speed limiter on all roads to keep me legal.

2 weeks a go some t#%^ sent in his dash cam footage to the police showing my van closely following a hgv through a red light. Hgv was amber/red and my van was about 1 -2 second red.
His footage was on a next base camera showing time and date.
It was forward facing and it filmed the van passing him on the left in the same direction ( so no driver shot)
My boss says it's me but I don't remember taking that particular route on that day.
And since the speeding fine I've been triple careful so certainly not jumping lights.

Our lock up is 1/4 mile from this incident so both my boss and I both use these roads several times daily in that van.
He's adamant im taking the fine and given job security I'm short of ammunition to fight him.

There is a high council Cctv Dome camera over the junction ( traffic light/roundabout) but it could be looking anywhere.

The police seem to have gone straight for prosecution rather that questioning the accuracy of the footage.
If his date and time are wrong how are we supposed to know who was driving?

Has anybody ever come across 3rd party footage?

Help and advice would be appreciated.

The first notice arrived on the 24/7 so he has 2 weeks to accept , deny or name me.

Thanks

She [ACC Cannings] declined to say whether any inquiries had been made to establish how many other people were entitled to drive Mr Roberts' private car.”

Why should such enquiries have been made? S172 is quite clear in that the Registered Keeper has an obligation to provide the driver's details. He shall be Not Guilty only if he can convince a court that he did not know who was driving and could not, by exercising "reasonable diligence", find out who was. The police have no obligation to assist him with that task....

Whatever you do, and you do need to check you've got it right on your current car - make sure you adjust the seat and steering collumn position so you aren't stretching to reach the steering wheel at all, and centre console buttons that much, when wedged into your seat. Same goes with depressing the pedals.

I found on my first car, a mid 90s Nissan Micra, that my seat was one notch too far away - I could still reach everything, but my arms were straight when I held the top of the steering wheel, and I has pivoting with my lower back when fully depressing the clutch, causing me to have serious back problems when using the car on my longer journey to work (20 miles each way) at that time. I never had any problems when I was doing low speed, short distance driving to my previous job. With the new seating position, all my back problems went away....
