Wife was in hospital with a serious chest infection.

At 2.00am the hospital rang me to say she was having trouble breathing and to come to hospital.
As we were travelling there I passed a number of speed cameras that I know and drove accordingly.

One in particular at a set of signals flashed as I went through on green. I couldn't believe it but I think it was a dual speed camera and red light camera in one box.

The limit was 40 but I had increased to about 50 with nothing on the road at that point.
We got to the hospital but she had sadly died.

She died alone.

Now with all the grieving I now have the prospect of receiving a NIP.
Could I contest this for the situation we were in, and would they show some leniency?

Seems you may have avoided a penalty then. Good result under the circumstances.

Hello

After much deliberation I decided to buy a BMW (428i) - my first ever BMW. My budget was for an approved used vehicle at about 3 years old. ... Read more

Well done Dante. A chap in our village here in Kent always goes up to Yorkshire to buy his BMW cars. I believe he uses a dealer in Wakefield who apparently is excellent in all aspects of service. Hope the car is all you wish for.

I plan to buy one of the above shortly. My problem is that the px I will offer is so rare ( an Alfa Romeo 156 GTA Selespeed Sportwagon. With only eight Selespeed GTA's currently known to the DVLA and I don't know how many are saloons or Sportwagons ) that it is impossible to know what value to put upon it. There is a saloon version currently being offered for sale at £22 k,
but that seems to be a tad optimistic. Any other GTA 156 owners out there with a feel for the market ? Read more

Years ago i had a neighbour who had a silver 156 (2.5V6), i used to admire it all the time, or at least up till he changed it for a renault clio!.

Yeah, Alfa really hit a high point with the looks of the 156 (they hadn't managed to make such a good looking car since the alfasud sprint, imo), such a simple elegant well proportioned shape, as was the sportwagon (who cared if it's boot wasn't very big!). And i totally agree regarding body kits, especially that hideous high level rear spoiler you got for the saloon.

All this anti diesel stuff at the moment and getting us to change to petrol and hybrids etc....will we have petrol lorries? It's common to see parked coaches with the engine on polluting all around. Will we have a country full of hybrid / electric cars but diesel lorries and coaches? Read more

I am always amused by this knee-jerk reaction against 'windmills'

I cannot blame people for protesting and it is their right, but I think its a waste of time as they build what they want regardless of what people say....

Hi, first timer poster here, sorry for the lengthy first post!

We had an issue with our car last year that resulted in the manufacturer paying up to have a new engine fitted; the car was, at the time, 9 years old but had a full service history and the engine failed with a known issue (crankshaft failure, not admitted by the manufacturer though, but very well documented). The local dealer sourced a short engine block, new cylinder heads, timing chains, oil pump etc, and built the engine up using the original external parts, sump, oil pickup, etc. We got the car back in June last year. In March this year, having covered 9000 miles on the new engine, the engine suddenly developed a severe rattle over the space of a couple of minutes and had to be towed back to the dealer; they diagnosed failed big ends due to a lack of oil, making various claims about the condition of the oil and refusing to accept any repsonibility for the failure. They refused to accept my suggestion of bringing in an independant engineering specialist, but instead suggested using The Motor Ombudsman as they are members of their scheme; TMO immediately requested that I appoint an independant engineering specialist, which I did, bearing the entire cost myself. After an examination of the engine and an oil analysis, they confirmed the oil was in perfect condition, indicating it hadn't been run low. The only problem they could identify was silicon contamination at quite a high level in the oil, citing several possible reasons for this, one of which was environmental contamination. TMO has seized upon this part of the report and stated that this was the cause of the failure and the garage were, therefore, not repsonsible. I've been exchanging emails with TMO, providing plenty of evidence that the garage's story holds no water, but they're not changing their opinion.... Read more

Bit of an update, the motor ombudsman has submitted put the claim in for a final decision, which is their last comment on the case; prior to this, I submitted a load of evidence showing that the garage's statement was it had run out of oil and I had all the evidence pointing out that it didn't; TMO stated unless I could show exactly what the garage had done wrong, then they had no case to answer - this sounds more like the counsel for the defence than an impartial ombudsman. I've now had to fork out another large sum of money to have the oil filter sectioned and analysed, hoping that the evidence I need is in there.

I was under the impression that if you took a car to a garage, they were supposed to find out what had gone wrong, not make wild *rse guesses as to what may have happened.

My gf's fiesta 1.4 tdci has had a rough idle when the engine is cold for a long time has 97k on it now. The other day it actually broke down started running extremely rough and went into limp mode was undriveable and had to be towed. We took it to our diagnostics place who have said that one injector is faulty and the other has a slight back leak. Total repair cost would be £600 which we not willing to spend as have had too many repair bills on this car.

Our garage offer Carbon Clean treatment (hook it up to a machine and run chemical clean through it) and whilst the guys they didn't recommend it for our car I saw and asked whether it could bring our injectors back at all. ... Read more

Prone to timing chain issues, these are very oil specific engines. Aftermarket suspension components also ruin the handling and ride. Buy only with a full BMW history with proof of annual oil changes and buy only if you're willing and able to continue this with a main dealer or genuine BMW specialist. Otherwise leave well alone. These are not reliable cars if neglected or poorly maintained. Post a link to the advert if you can. But generally I'd warn you off BMW. I've had nothing but bother with any I've owned or sold.

I've just sold an old Porsche Boxster S (25MPG) and am about to part company with my Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.6D (60MPG). I'd like to replace them with one car that finds a healthy compromise between the 2. I'm looking for something with great economy as I cover around 24k per year, some style and a strong engine as I enjoy driving enthusiastically. The number of seats isn't too important, but I would prefer something with a decent boot. Ideally, I'd like to spend £6-7k, but a little more could be feasible if needed. What's out there?

Thanks in advance. Read more

Thanks, SLO, you're a star!

An 'approved' used seems a better way to go to minimse risks (following your previous advice on several threads)....

I have just had my air con re-gassed however the air con is not coming on now at all - the light comes on but pump doesn't kick in. Any ideas?

The outside temperature reading has broken and is reading -5 degress. Could this be affecting it? Or is it related to the regas?... Read more

Depends what system is fitted to the car. An incorrect outside temp reading could prevent the system operating as most a/c systems will shut down below +3 degrees. How old is the car and does it have climate control?

new job is going to result in about 20k miles pa - I don't want to use my family car as its too expensive to run like that and not what we bought it for - so looking for:

  • Something that does real world 45mpg plus
  • costs about £1k
  • only needs to last 2yrs - anything after that bonus or can go to the scrappy
  • reliable
  • cheap to insure and running costs
  • don't care if petrol or diesel
  • prefer mid size (focus, Leon, etc) but will settle for small (Fiesta, Ibiza) if that best option

Mazda6 goes for next to nothing second hand. Get a petrol one and check underneath for rust. Sold mine last year with 160k and all was running smoothly. Always refer to MOT history website, it tells you a lot.
