Having owned 20 automatic cars, I find the Kia Ceed with its 7 speed dct box to be the best, I have driven 20,000 miles & no problems, I would not touch another VW or BNW with a barge pole.

My apologies if I am mistaken. My policy states I must have valid MOT. Not sure what the chances of a making a claim would be.

What happens if your MOT expires, or your car fails the MOT?

By the terms of their policy you can't legally drive it to an MOT test centre....

Low oil pressure warning on start with an engine STOP warning, much clattering of the top end but it's not my car and went to view it with a view to purchase and fix. the owner who knows nothing about cars said the noise goes away after about 15 minutes running. I don't know why the warning was ignored.

Is it possible to drop the sump with the engine in the car. is there a tensioner on the pump chain, opinions if possible that the low pressure is causing hydraulic valve lifters to take a while to pressurize?... Read more

No point in rebuilding an engine which has oilways full of swarf from failed bearings unless you strip it down completley and flush out EVERY oilway several times . And have the requisite micrometers to measure wear, the skill to use them and the specifications of all tolerances.

I would avoid a Caddy unless it was the SDI, so many probems with them - check out the forums especially the german forums that you can translate into english.

We decided against Caddys as a partner company had a fleet of them and found them to be money pits....

Meyle are the dogs wotsits. They also do a heavy duty range. It's where I head for anything bearing or joint related.

Well the title says it all, really. I've been having a problem with fumes getting inside my Focus. My mechanic inspected the exhaust, fuel injector seals and much else. He came to the conclusion that the issue was caused by two things: the fact that the EGR valve was stuck open and the need for a DPF regen. The EGR valve has been changed and the fumes seem a little reduced - maybe. But there's still a kind of smoky, sooty smell getting in. Could that really be caused by a clogged DPF?

When I asked the mechanic for an explanation of how those two things could cause 'nasties' to escape the engine and then get in via the vents he said in both cases that it was a matter of unburnt fuel, but didn't elaborate.

Would like some feedback as to whether getting an artifical regen on the DPF is likely to help, and some explanation, perhaps, of how unburnt fuel can find its way into the air under the bonnet. I'm not knowledgeable about cars so the simpler the better! Thanks so much. Read more

55 plate, 81k miles. Only owned the car for a few weeks and have avoided driving it because of the fume issue. Car mostly runs well, though occasionally holds back a bit as pulling away, then comes to life at higher revs...

Other info: EGR valve had been stuck open, was replaced a week ago. I understand this may have contributed to the DPF clog.

Also: Pat fluid is showing as empty when car is hooked up to mechanic's computer. But there's actually plenty of Pat fluid!

Also, mechanic's computer is being prevented from initiating DPF regen. He will need to swap some box or other in the car to go ahead with regen, apparently. I wonder if something has been preventing passive regen ever happening!

Am becoming very inclined to sell the car, now! I would declare the issue when doing so of course (it's not immediately obvious on a test drive - I missed it!). Whatever I do, I'm losing a lot of money... sigh! I hope to minimize that by taking the most cost effective route forward in terms of repair, or by selling the car as is asap.

A friend of mine in France is looking at buying a 2012 Honda Civic 9 1.8. automatic petrol. Am I right in thinking the series 9 Civic auto is a torque convertor box and that it was the series 8 that had the dodgy Ishift? Are there any things to watch out for with this model of Civic? It is a one owner car with 48,000km on sale at a Honda dealer. Read more

“ The above statement only applied to the 1.8 n/a configuration, the 1.4 remained in iShift form up to the demise of the 8th gen. Can anyone testify about the performance of this T/C gearbox in the 9th gen when fitted to the 1.8 Tourer? Trying to compare it with our slightly larger 2010 Avensis 1.8 tourer.”

Every day is a school day. You’re right enough. To answer your question though, I’d have absolutely no fears regarding the 1.8 Civic auto beyond avoiding the early pre 2013 hatchback models due to some cases of excessive oil usage. It’ll be a little more economical and a more nimble car to drive

Hi all,

I had a new battery fitted about a year ago now (so its relatively new). Recently every day on ignition it seems to struggle to start (which it does, but sounds a bit pathetic). On colder days it struggles even more, abt a week ago it didnt start the engine at all (the glowplugs came on) but with a bit of persuasion from the revs it did eventually. I had a part fitted to the exhaust yesterday and the mechanic said my battery was low on charge. So i believe the battery is losing charge and is not being charged properly when driving (i do drive it regularly). ... Read more

Sounds most likely to be the alternator - worn brushes maybe

Check it yourself - all you need is a 15 quid multimeter...
