Idly surfing the Net I came across a number of sites that have tests of reaction time, involving clicking in response to a colour change or other signal, five times to arrive at an average.

Tried five different sites, my results, average times (in milliseconds) were:-... Read more

All these times are presumably measured with you looking at a screen waiting for an event to occur, i.e. a not very realistic test of a driving environment. Maybe the older generations are more affected while driving by other thoughts (now deary me, did I remember to put the cat out before I left ...)

Towards the end of another thread a comment was made that people just bought used cars to save money. This was refuted by some others and it started me thinking. I , for example will not buy a car with EPB which is becoming increasingly difficult, of the various reasons to buy, or not buy, used.

Obviously it will vary between manufacturers but is there an approximate year which was a tipping point with overhold of modern gadgetry.... Read more

Thanks Andrew.
But I m pretty sure this 1.4 petrol engine with a cam chain so it won't have been tampered with.
Hopefully it won't be an epic job, it's the same engine used in the Mini.

Twice today in a few minutes drivers chatting away on their phones. One hand on the wheel, one on the phone, their mind on the conversation. One was a bloke and the other a woman, she was taking a bend with her one hand skimming across the steering wheel as she couldn't control it. The recent increase in punishment for this offence is not having much effect apparently. Read more

This thread reminds me of the Harry Enfield Self Righteous Bros.

The person in the Mercedes, possibly with an inbuilt hands-free, might well have had a phone to the ear because he was dealing with two calls at once....

You could try CATS2U for a replacement, they're not too expensive.

Where to start,

3 weeks ago my 1.6 diesel focus TDCI went in to limp mode... took it to the garage and codes read DPF filter, i had i chemically flushed and all was well. yesterday went into limp mode again displaying Engine systems fault, so back to the garage. the mechanic who i know is very experienced and trustworthy ran another diagnostic this time dpf, power steering, battery and alternator codes have came up, he has check these faults and they are all fine, he seems to think this could be a software problem or a wiring issue, i told him i did not want to spent hundreds on this car valuved at £1000 so he advised me to fined a mechanic who will fiddle around with the software and maybe to BLOCK the codes from coming up and sending it into limp mode.... Never heard of blocking codes!

And you don't state the cars year so it might/might not be a smart charge alternator system,...

<< In some ways i hope they hurry up and get on with fully automating vehicles, then this doomed and dangerous idea can prove its folly and be chucked in the bin where it belongs before too many of the things are out there and so much money invested (wasted) that they dare not change course >>

It may indicate my age, but I agree with you, GB. When I used to work (a long time ago) it was in designing small business databases. One of my 'clients' who had been around for many years commented "no-one knows what they want until they've got one", meaning that the end-user can't imagine all the possibly useful features and doesn't know the scope of what can be provided; and the designer can't build in all the tricks which the client may think of later....

I have to agree. We went to look at one and thought Oooh! We got in and thought hmmm! Then we drove it and thought nope!

I do agree about the Ghastly Grills (reminiscent of the Cow Catachers on US locomotives !) I'm surprised Lexus' lawyers didn't give the basic design the 'thumbs down' on injury liability grounds....

That's not the whole story - I've been keeping an eye on the Petrol Prices website and the prices on the forecourts, especially at Sainsbury's, have, at least in my part of country been rising over the past few weeks, even compared to other supermarkets.

They were, in a cheap area (normally due to more competition - about 10 or so filling stations within 10mins drive) about 15 miles from my home town, about 3-4p a litre cheaper, now exactly the same price as the Tescos in my town, which only has two filling stations - Tesco and an Esso station 100yds away, plus 3 very expensive ones on major A roads that only the gullable and desperate traveller (not locals) use (as they are about 5-7p a litre more expensive.

All this 'reduction' is, in my view, is a cynical ploy, like 'Black Friday' is (for the most part) for shopping, to get people in the stores, particularly as they are desperately trying not to lose out on huge amounts of custom to the likes of Amazon & co around the time of 'Black Friday' - I remember this day & weekend last year, and my local Tesco was almost empty, despite many 'offers' in store (not just the food section). Anyone also notice (for Sainsbury's shoppers with Nectar cards) that this week they sent out loads of spend £20 (or whatever), get 6p/ltr off the fuel?

Pity it costs me twice as much to get to the nearest store than I'd save buying a full tank of fuel, compared to filling up (when I actually needed to) at my local Tesco (not that I am a 'Tesco' person or am trying to plug them - I actually do most of my grocery shopping at Morrisons). Read more

Traveling around and covering some miles recently due to family issues, I have noticed that there is little ryme or reason behind fuel pricing. Just tend to try and buy the best quality fuel at the best price I can find as and when I need it... gone are the days when I drive any distance out of my way to get the cheapest fuel.
