Hi All

I have a really frustrating and very dangerous problem with my Micra. I bought it privately a couple of months ago in really good nick with 50k on the clock, and it ran ok for a few weeks but recently it has been a swine to drive as it is struggling to do anything over 40-50mph. Car is a 2003, 1240cc petrol, 2door.

I will try and explain the problem but if you need any more info please get in touch. It will drive fine up to about 40mph but anything over say 4th gear and the car judders and just feels like the power is going to fail, it doesn't totally fail though, it will continue at about 40-50mph maximum (juddering), if I touch the accelerator slightly it seems to maintain its current speed and there seems to be power there ok until I press it down harder there is nothing there at all. It will run forever idle, in fact it sounds like it is running lovely at a stand still.

I'm really worried because I need to drive approx 10 miles down the motorway two evenings a week but in the last few weeks I have had some really nail biting journeys as my Micra seems to lose all power when I get over approx 40 to 50mph, obviously this means I need to pull over on a really busy motorway in the dark, one particular trip I had to stop 5 times and I was shaking by the time I reached my destination. After that really bad trip I took it into a garage who ran diagnostics which turned up nothing, they checked everything they thought may be the cause but one thing they couldn't get to was the fuel filter as the guy said it was hard to get to. He also gave the car a winter service and when I got it back it ran ok (but only ok) for a week or so but the problem is back and I'm gutted.

The car actually passed its MOT last week as well, needing only a headlight bulb, so that didn't flag up any problems so I am totally at a loss, I seriously darent drive it on the motorway until it's fixed and this is a big problem to me. Has anyone had a similar problem with a Micra? Any help would be awesome as having a car is essential right now.

One other thing I have tried is turning the ignition on and off whilst driving down my road, I was told this may re-set the engine management or something but it hasn't solved problem. I am totally skint right now so I really can't afford to keep paying to get it looked at but it not getting fixed.

Any help or advice with the problem would be really really appreciated as I need to try and solve this problem urgently. Many thanks in advance for any advice you can offer. Read more

Hi all, I have a further update... I drove the car about a mile yesterday to a shop and when I got back in it wouldn't start up, it was turning over but just not connecting, it did actually start after about 15 mins trying it but it has never done this before.

Does this tie in with the rest of the power issues please? Does it help solve the puzzle of the intermittent fault? Please help if you can.

Many thanks for any help you can offer.

Phew, had me worried there for a bit, thanks for clearing that up SteveieB.

Yes, taxi lads know where to go for service that keeps them mobile, not just that but their cars have to last hundreds of thousands of miles so good work is a given.

I was wondering if anyone knows what happened to Proton in the UK. My great aunt has had the same proton since 1991, and would now like a car with power steering, however I can't seem to find any new protons, but also no evidence that they no longer sell cars in the UK.

Have they slunk quietly away? Read more

“I reckon Proton finished Lada off in the nineties, with many Lada dealers moving over, as cars like the Samara were so bad.”

People could have value and decent quality instead of having to suffer the ancient designs and terrible build which Lada offered. I had a good thing going with any Lada trade-ins we took. I flogged them to a contact who was shipping them back home to Russia via container ship where there was strong demand for them no matter the condition.

Have a friend that has a 61plate A5 2.0tdi

Service book says cambelt due at 133k miles with no time limit.
Just been in for service and dealer says is due now.
Current mileage is 74k.
(I have always driven Alfas say change at 80k but we all know you should have it done at 40-50k)

Does this seem about right.
Many thanks

When I bought my Leon 1.4 TSi the belt drive engine was very new and the recommended change interval varied between the diiferent makes in the VAG group. VW said it was fitted for the lifetime of the car, Skoda said 12 years or 100,000 miles and the delaer I bought the car form said 3 years or 36,000 miles.

There is no way I would want to follow VW's or even Skoda's advised schedules but the one specified by Seat was the shortest interval I had seen since I had been driving. High mileage drivers could be changing the belt every 2 years or less and at almost £400 it would make the car uneconomical to own for many people....

Difficult to find any fuse boxes in the very congested engine bay of the Sport model. Any idea where it is ? Even th manual suggests it's a dealer job to replace fuses in engine bay fuse box ??

So I was driving and had been sat at these lights for 10 minutes without it changing, it was late and there were no cars around so I went through. Bad of me I know but I was honestly there for 10 minutes before making this call. Does anyone know if the round black thing on top of the traffic light is a sensor or a camera? Im worried it's a camera and that I should be expecting a penalty and points. Any help would be great thanks! Read more

They could be sensors for the Puffin crossing.

Pedestrian User-Friendly Intelligent crossing (bit of a mouthful) or Puffin crossing for short.

These pedestrian crossings look very similar to Pelican crossings, but have sensors on top of the traffic lights. These sensors detect if pedestrians are crossing slowly and can hold the red traffic light longer if needed.

These do not have a flashing amber light as part of it's sequence and phase like normal traffic lights.

Just want to thank you all for your help. I had a niggling feeling that it was something to do with the original work that was done. There were quite a few signs pointing at NOT being the HG, and with some of your helpful advice, I'm very glad we decided to get a second opinion.

And I most certainly will not be using them again.

Hey, I'm new to the forum. Does anyone have any advice on when the Cambelt should be changed? I seem to get conflicting information that frankly confuses me. My car is about 9,000 miles shy of reaching 100,000 miles. No Cambelt change noted in the service history. Read more

Hi all. I bring up this old thread because I would like to know if the 1.6i engine on the 56 plate is the 16 valve engine? Is there any way for a good mechanic to check the condition of the cam belt without replacing it?

I have just purchased this Zafira, the previous owner owned it for 10 months and doesn't know what a cam belt is, so I assume it has to be done, it's on 85,000 miles?

What do you think about it? thanks
