Anyone out there know how I extract the small front sidelight fitting so that I can replace the bulb please? It's a small grey plastic tab but I'm not sure if I need to twist or just pull. Tried this morning and my hands are freezing! Read more
This is, apparently, a common problem.
The bit I don't get is if this is a problem for non VW engines or if it is only VW.... Read more
Engine Mil light on ,is not an Mot fail, although Abs/Esp,Airbag and brake warning are.
Generic engine 'fault' light (eg the so called K light* on the Xantia) is one thing. What's position if it's the light for a specific anti pollution fault? ...

If you looking for auto model, then take note that Tucson DCT models have reported transmission problems.
You can also consider Kia Sportage (does not share DCT transmission with Tucson IIRC)....
If you change your wheels on any recent JLR vehicle you must move over the tpms valves too otherwise you will get a tpms error as the system does not automatically learn the new tpms valves. If you don't want to move the valves as you have a winter wheel set for example then you will need to get the valves synced to the tpms module. This involves a trip to JLR dealer who will charge £180 to sync the new tpms valves to the tpms module. Some 'indies' may do it cheaper if they have the tech to do it. Read more
My last off topic post on this thread.
Regarding the former colleague with the £48,000 SUV. One winters day his wife rang in to say it was snowing heavily at home and he must leave work immediately. Well it was a beautiful day at the office so we all had a laugh and carried on. 10 minutes later phone rang again, schools being closed, cars on their roofs, leave immediately or not get home. Its probably a 20 mile trip vitually all on good A road, dual carriageways and motorway. He left with us still having a good laugh....
Starting a new job next month which will involve a daily motorway commute of 90 miles round trip. I currently have a 60 plate Fiat 500 twinair, and am looking at replacing this. I want something that will be reliable, comfortable on my commute, with decent mpg. Currently leaning towards a PCP deal with a budget of around £250 a month.
Currently I have 2 options in mind:... Read more
Spam. Something about New Years that we seem to be getting so much at the moment?
For the last 6 years I have been using Castrol ACEA A1/B1 5w/30 spec. oil which was recommended on the Castrol site. I have just purchased some Magnatec which says on the can is suitable for A1/ B1 and A5/B5. (The new recommendation is A5)
But the Shell and Mobil sites gives the recommendation as ACEA C3.... Read more
There's is a consumer issue with Shell Helix - there's about 20 different specifications as really Shell Helix simply means car oil from Shell - you may well have got the right version of Shell Helix but always worth double-checking.
Gen 4 Fuel consumption.
I have had four Toyota Hybrids over the past 12 years and this Gen 4 is the best yet. However real MPG depends very much on the tyres (wheel size), climate, and the type of jouney. This car is new on 15" Toyo tyres and it is winter. A 27 mile round trip -2 outside temp gave 61.9 mpg. Next day 225 miles fast Motorway mixed with short cross country 57.2 mpg. The long trip route I have done at Christmas in a Gen2 prius 15" wheels a Gen3 Prius 15" and an Auris TS Hybrid 17" wheels over many years. This is 10 mpg better than the Gen 2 and AurisTS and 5 better than the Gen 3. ... Read more
Inspired by the debate I looked at this website which has extensive real world performance data (compiled from many magazine and website tests):
This sound started a couple of days ago and is only noticeable when idle. It comes and goes, but is mostly there and it worries me a little. The car is meticulously serviced, has relatively low mileage for it’s age (70k) and runs perfectly. Cambelt is also nowhere near due for replacement. I think this short vid clip I made may point out where the sound is coming from. The alloy housing behind the alternator pully seems to be moving in time to the noise. Is this something to worry about? I have spoke to a local garage and they seem unsure where the noise is coming from, so no help. I personally think that it is coming from where I have pointed out. Any ideas and advice are much appreciated.

You could remove the belt and see if the noise goes.
Recently my dash heater fan keeps cutting out - if I pull on the power wire it starts again, but then stops.
The wire goes directly into the fan, so I guess a repair will involve pulling the thing out, which is a lot of work.... Read more
Ahhh yes.
Renault's famous quality - or should I say lack of quality.
The fan is directly behind the stereo, so perhaps easier to remove. The motor is fine, its just the power wire going into it thats loose and requires a tug to get it to connect again....
Hi all, recently replaced my throttle main body after checking the error message that came up with the engine warning light. Light was cleared and all worked fine for the last month. Today it had come back in with the same symptoms of an engine over run when turning the car ignition off. I'm guessing it's exactly the same problem but am scratching my head as to what has made it go again?!
I also have the infamous traction control light on constantly and yet there is no code showing with this on the reader that read the code for the engine fault...... dashboard is like a Christmas tree!!!! Fingers crossed someone can help.
Many thanks!! Read more
Yes the anti shudder. Was going on what the reader was saying in terms of 'tech terms'. As you say it did shudder as the engine was turned off, but in last couple of days it hasn't. It shuddered after a couple of short journeys then the light came on. I've cleared the light now and it hasn't shuddered since so it's staying off. Think I'm going to change the egr valve as I read somewhere that doing one with out the other doesn't always do much. Sound right?
Thank you. Just tried again and it's come on now!
