I bought a white BMW and this is a "free" colour. A colour would have cost me £650. Too expensive. White is a no-brainier for private buyers. Read more
Just looking at the banding above , the 20mph is interesting, we live on one, to my knowledge it has never been subject to speed checks and is treated with total contempt with that knowledge in mind, some indeed see it as a challenge and 70mph seems the target for certain motorcyclists.
No point in any speed limits especially the ones that are necessary if they are not enforced. Read more
So if fines are based on income surely that makes the penalty system unfair so that one person will pay a bigger fine than someone else for exactly the same offence

My wife's I10 is fitted with 165x60x14 tyres could I fit 165x65x14 tyres ,as there is more tyre choice in this size Read more
If they are a recommended size yes. But they will be slightly taller and could foul on full suspension movement. Check with Hyundai. Your insurers will need to be told as well.
Our last Micra had 175 60 15 tyres fitted which were rare and expensive. On the sticker on the door pillar the 175 65 15 was also listed and these were much more plentiful and far cheaper. They were slightly taller but since they were a Nissan option there were no clarance issues and the insurers were happy with the change provided we did all 4 together. Although the tyres still had adeqate tread they were coming up to 6 years old according to the date code so they really needed changing regardless of wear.
My car was hit by a third party whilst parked on my road, I was not around at the time however one of my neighbours witnessed it and passed the information of the vehicle in question on to me. My car is damaged (creased and dented) on the offside wing, I got a rough estimate for repair from a private garage of around £500. I have not informed my insurance company of the incident yet as my renewal is due soon and I am unsure whether this incident will adversely affect my premium. I am a 22 year old male and this will be my first year without any claims. Any advice or help with this situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Read more
If you have the vehicle details then you can find the registered keeper by paying the DVLA a small fee (£3.50 ish).
Assume the third party did not stop and give name & address to anyone then they have commited an offence. Report this to the Police....
I have previously commented that I am unhappy about the number of people who can access your details from your car registration. However today I saw a worrying post about ANPR and parking. Once some one has paid and there is no issue common sense dictates the data should be wiped shortly after. The suggestion was that not all parking companies were doing this and were selling the data on to typically marketing companies. I find this deeply disturbing especially if it contains more than your registration number or if your details are subsequently obtained/used. Also why should anyone be able to analyse where and when I park! Read more
I can't find the link at the moment but saw the reference on sqlservercentral.com , a site used by database professionals. 'Big data' is a buzz word these days and in the the discussion a number of participants mentioned the retention of unnecessary data. It has also been mentioned on another car website but the exact one escapes me at the moment.
As another poster has mentioned maybe a job for an investigative journalist!
A friend’s car is over ten years old. His car has been written off as it needs two new n/s doors after someone drove out of a side road without stopping. The other driver, and his insurance company, have accepted liability. The offer appears to reflect the condition and mileage of the car and includes the use of a hire car for one wee3k. However after getting the car looked at by a local body shop he has decided that keeping and repairing the car with s/h parts was more sensible. However the insurance company have come back with what appears a high’ish price which also does not include a hire car – the two costs together (he would need the use of another car whilst his is being repaired) being about 50% of the first offer. So how is salvage costed in this situation? Or is it that the insurance company want him to scrap the car?
An almost identical incident happened to me at lunchtime on Christmas Eve - not the most convenient time to get anything done. My car is approaching 9 years old, and although still drivable I reckoned the damage would be somewhere near write-off. Other driver immediately admitted blame and passed it to their insurers.
I sent them photos of the damage and as soon as the local bodyshop reopened after New Year (ironically just where the crash happened) a full-cost estimate. The insurers confirmed that they intended to write off and offered £3500, about the cost of buying a similar vehicle. I said the car was worth repairing, and the offer became 65% of that, which I thought was a fair offer, and close to the estimate. Car has just gone in to be fixed - I hope it hasn't suffered any more damage than a cat-D listing .......
Fog blindness, or blindness to the absence of fog is something I experienced a lot this morning here in the north east.
Obviously the fog in london made it on the news (shock! horror!, fog in winter!), yet up here it was completely clear yet dozens of cars were driving along with their fog lights on. In my entire commute I never saw anything even resembling a patch of wispy mist, yet the motorway was full of blazing fog lights.... Read more
And what about the absurd tendency to have two rear foglights near the brakelights? They can seriously interfere with the perception of brakelights, making a rear end shunt even more likely to happen on a motorway (nearly caught me out once). It should be illegal to have more than one rear foglight, which should be positioned well away from the main light clusters.
In part I disagree - should be illegal to have only one light illuminated at the rear of the vehicle unless it is in the centre. Driving in Kent you see single left & single right fog lights. Personally, I've never mixed up fog & stop lights, fog lights are generally just on, whilst stop lights come on and go off, and of course usually these days there are 3 of them, left, right, middle!...
If I visit my rental properties (owned personally not using Ltd Co) using my car which is under SDP&C cover, will it require any additional insurance?
If yes, when do I need that?... Read more
I agree with other statements on this thread. Business use is not that expensive. I had it for years and it really was just a few pounds extra. Easier all round just to claim mileage at the HMRC rate and this avoids all the BIK and reduction in your Persnal Allowance code. If you enough miles it can be to your distinct advantage. Do not stint on proper cover, it could save you a fortune one day if the worst were to happen. Also you should need Public Liability cover. If you are showing people around and they have a fall or other injury you may find yourself at the wrong end of a claim.
Good luck....
When the engine is running and the radio is switched on, as soon as I turn the steering wheel left or right I get like a 'buzzing noise' from the radio through the speakers. I went to Halfords garage and their guy had never heard of the problem.I then went to the main shop where another guy had a good look around. He suggested fitting a DAB radio as that would definitely cure the problem as it uses a completely separate aerial. But it made no difference. He had worked on the car now for about 2.5 hours in total. He re-fitted the original radio and all at no cost whatsoever. Good on Halfords!
In fact 2 different Suzuki main agents have no known knowledge of what could be causing this 'buzzing.' The car is the bog standard model. Read more
Try cleaning all the battery connexions including the earth strap to the body.
Might be that your battery is near end of life.
