There's a bewildering array of variants on the 1.4 TSI theme, but they don't seem to be all that great long term propositions if this thread on a car dealer forum is anything to go by. Perhaps more recent builds are better.

That thread is discussing the old pre 2013 TSI which had a cam chain. I have seen no reported issues with the totally new belt drive engine introduced in 2013....

So I've wanted some form of GTI/D for a long time now and it's finally getting to the point where I can get one.

Important info:

I was originally waiting and saving for a MK7 but I've decided I actually prefer the look of the MK6 and it's almost within the budget right now (budget is 4-5k off of a mk7).

So to explain my driving situation, I will be joining the military this year (April time) and i'll be ranging from 100 to 200 miles from home and be making regular trips back, I reckon between 1-2 a week (but the car may not get used a lot in the time between).

I'm trying to decide how best to go about getting my dream car with the main debate being between mk6/mk7 and also between a GTI and GTD.

I believe the mk6 will prove majorly better value, and my long trips may favour the diesel (I like to be frugal and also although I like driving fast I don't like to rev a car too hard so I do quite enjoy the mid range grunt of diesels)

Extra info (rambling):

So looking at GTD/GTI I found that mostly the GTD is cheaper to buy outright and i'm assuming will also be better to purchase with high mileage than a GTI; should I be worried about buying a post 100k gti/gtd and are there many known reliability issues with the mk6 golf in general or gti/gtd specifically?

Also I had the thought, a GTD is more likely to be motorway mileage and is less likely to have been driven hard it's whole life (just because someone with an exuberant driving style would favour the petrol)

anyway.. if anyone has any pointers or advice on anything I've said it would be greatly appreciated. Read more

That's a lot of great advice there! Yes I would be looking for one word a full BMW service history, but how would I find out if it's been serviced by a specialist and who am I to judge that and the same for oil changes, would most people not just do that themselves(although actually it would have proof in the service records I assume)?

I plan to maintain it properly and also continue to leave it for main dealers to service (while buying it with main dealer history too).

One question I have is with regards to all maintinence and ownership costs (aside from insurance, tax and petrol), how much would you estimate I should put aside for the first year of ownership?

When it comes to buying a used car, what are your thoughts on an acceptable mileage figure? I'm looking at Honda CRV's 2.0i V-TEC 4WD models from around 2011 onwards. I'm obviously leaning towards the lowest mileage ones I can find but also am being mindful of previous service history. I have, at this point, decided (aided by advice from a few of your good selves) to probably go to a Honda dealer due to the minefield of 'unknowns' by considering potentially dodgy ones on offer on various websites. Obviously I'll be paying more from a dealer but hopefully it will be worth it for the 'peace of mind' that I'll hopefully be buying a good car. I've seen a few with a full Honda Service History which I guess is as good as it gets but would there be any limits to an acceptable mileage on cars from 6yrs old and less? I'm thinking that the engines should still be sound but the rest of the car i.e wheel bearings\clutch etc will also have done the same distance.

Thanks very much. Read more

Hi,

I am looking to buy a used Toyota Avensis Estate diesel and I am torn between buying one for around £4k 2008 with 100k on the clock or spending a bit more like £7.5k and getting something around 2011/12 with around 70k on the clock. ... Read more

Petrol is definitely the safe option. The 1.8 is decent on fuel and fairly refined but lacks midrange performance so you'll have to plan a little further ahead for overtaking. Not much to watch out for on these aside from some VVT engines using a bit of oil but keep an eye on it and top it up if it does and all is well.

Nathan, you didn't make it clear at first that this was an additional car, so it's not surprising that you were misunderstood.

There are too many, quite needless, personal insults in this thread. Locked.

If you detail a bit more exactly what is in dispute, then you may be able to get some advice.

The TLC pack covered for X years or Y miles, whichever comes first - and exactly what is covered has varied over time. The pack being sold with new cars now, for example, is 3 years / 36k miles. A couple of years ago, the pack covered 5 years/50k miles.

I usualy take care of my cars at home. Its cheaper.

Problem was the water vetween sparkplug and coil. Eectric discharge was going into cilinder head instead of sparkplug. Put half a liter of isopropilic alcohol in gas tank just to get rid of any water if there's any. ...

Hi everyone

i'm mike and new to this forum.

i'm having a wee issue with my C5 as everything for fine up untill monday morning when i jumped in the car started it up and realised that the blower isnt running and therefore cannot demist the windscreen.
i have found loads of links regarding this issue on the older version of the C5 but not mines which is the 2010 model.

mines is the 2010 VTR+ Nav model so has the climate control and all the temp display etc lights up, but only seems like the fan isnt running.

Monday morning was minus 4 here and this shouldnt have affected the fan.

does anyone have any ideas or experience on this problem?

I have the 1.8 petrol Insignia and have had the "Service Vehicle Soon" warning and the cooling fans constantly running. A quick Google suggested the thermostat may be the culprit.

My local garage suggested a fan control ECU needed replacing but I was not sure if their diagnostic kit could tell the differnce between the thermostat or ECU fault.... Read more
