Lots of talk on here. It's happened to my 62 Dig-T twice now and I have 'fixed it' twice. The tell tale sign (apart from the car nut starting) is that the remote fob will not lock the car - the buttons on the door handle will. Here's my fix.........

1. Far away from the car, remove the battery from the key fob, press all the buttons and hold for a few seconds. Put new battery in (CR 2023). Get in the car and push the little button by the gear selector to be able to take the car out of park. Put it in neutral and back into park. Hold the fob right over the start button while pumping the brake....

I am looking at buying a VV golf. However a 2006 and above model with around 45000 miles is going over my budget. Should I go for an
1. older model ( how old) ,
2 more mileage ( how much is advisable)
3 or instead look for Polo to keep cost affordable.

How much mileage is ok for a car like VV Golf?

Thanks

Does it need to be a VW? You can get very similar mechanicals in Skoda or Seat form for probably less cash -lower badge premium.

Or for the same money you could get a Ford Focus or VX Astra (zero badge premium). You would surely then get a newer car or less milage....

The Italian tune-up heats the engine up enough to burn off carbon deposits. It was invented, so to speak, for people who only do short runs where the engine never heats up fully. So you could be right. :)

Not sure it will work for DGI problem....

This one has caught my eye. Seems quite quick and a bit frugal on fuel and also I can only see them in auto form ( ideally I want an auto)

So is the Mondeo 2.0 petrol Ecobbost engine any good? Also how good is the auto gearbox? Finally is any of it especially expensive to repair?... Read more

I do like the look of the newer Honda Accord ALOT! around year 09/10. But why oh why have such a silly boot layout where it narrows so much half way along....

My Focus 1l Ecoboost was making a tapping noise so i booked it into the garage. They took it to a Ford dealer who stripped the enginge to discover that the crankshift has broken up and have advised that the engine needs replaced.

Any advice on what could have caused this would be much appreciated. Car is a 62 plate and covered around 38K. Serviced in Dec. Oil and water levels were fine and no warning lights were on. Read more

I suspect it isn't an easy engine to strip and rebuild. The cam belt which has an oil bath is quoted as being a 7 hour job to replace at a cost of £800. It is supposed to last for 10 years or 150000 miles, however HJ has a failure at 108000 listed in the fiesta good/ bad section.

I never took much notice of that traditional 'sell at 100k' mindset that people had, with cars of the nineties having the potential to last much longer, but it looks like this type of engine is going to bring that back with a vengeance. These cars will be worthless at that stage once people have got used to the intended lifespan.

I think this is the last gasp of the internal combustion engine (for private transport) before electric vehicles are developed further. I still don't see how they can all be charged (which will presumably be at night when everyone is home from work) unless the national power grid is uprated. A couple of years ago we were being told that there was no spare capacity, and that's just for todays demand.

Can anyone help me. My wife's 207 as just started to have a mind of its own. The wipers and head lights are always on although they are turned off. The heater don't work. Oil light on and it's got a brake fault on the dash. Any ideas thanks in advance.

Seconded. Check the voltage across the battery with the engine running, it should read about 14.4 volts, much less than that and you have an alternator problem.

New member here just looking for some advice.

My Golf had the emissions update applied by my VW dealership a couple of months back. Car had no big issues before that. Car has a full service history and is well looked after... Read more

Well it seems it is related to the fix. On further reading the update messes with the EGR valve in that it opens and forcibly shuts the valve. It also makes it work 3 or 4 times harder than it usually does (not to mention constant regeneration Im getting with the car now).

Seems there arte thousands of people in the same boat and its having issues in all of Europe and Australiatoo...

Does anyone else find they tell you to change up too early? In my Citroen Berlingo van I can feel the engine labouring if I change up before 1500rpm but the indicator arrow on the display comes on way before then. The engine doesnt feel fully relaxed going into 5th until 1650rpm. Read more

My Skoda Octavia is the first car with a gear change indicator I've owned. No problems following the advice unless I see something coming like a hill or bend and need to stay in a lower gear. The 1.4 TSI is very torquey and does not labour anyway. And 30 mph in light traffic can be ok in 4th or 5th gear.

A young relative proudly showed me his new (for him) 08 Outback yesterday. This had replaced a troublesome 05 diesel Passat. In fact I did not even know he had brought the Passat as he only had it a short time. Going around the car I noticed the words "Boxer Diesel". I am aware that Subarus are noted for reliability and have chain driven engine but are their diesels more reliable than the opposition? Read more

Just had a quick look at that thread. Two posters who do well below 10,000 a year complaining their diesels are suffering problems.

2012 car which had done 36,000 in four years and the one above 17,000 in 2 ish years.

When will car buyers learn? Diesels thrive on high mileage. Low mileage kills them.
