I'd be grateful for any thoughts, comments, suggestions on this, please.
Car has done 169k miles. Last service/MoT (by my trusted indy) about 6 weeks ago - no problems. Had new steering pump about 2 years/16k miles ago (same indy). No problems since then. Normal mileage is about 8k pa, lot of local rural with some long (2k foreign) and some UK 300 or so trips.... Read more
After buying a spare wheel for my 2017 Clio to put in the boot, I have done some research on on Clio cars fitted with spare wheels and how they fit.
I have since found out that they operate by using a wheel release clamp and top winch carrier holder.... Read more

Hi, I am considering buying a 2010 Honda CR-V as above. it has 108000 miles on it with a dealer service history (last service at 93000 miles). It is up for £8,999.
Looking at online reviews and comments, this model seems generally reliable but are there any maintenance issues looming that could be expensive to fix, bearing in mind the mileage?... Read more
They're generally good news, I have one myself, a pre facelift Mk IV 1.6 DTEC SE-T. Safe, well made and easy to sell on as long as it's not too heavy in the miles. You'll probably find the newer car will recoup much of that extra outlay when you come to sell while this will be challenging with well into six figures. Dealers know the diesels are not as bombproof as the rep suggests and hit higher mileage examples quite hard on trade in. They expect a big margin to offset any risks with heavy mileage SUV's.
There's plenty of late model Mk III's around at main dealers with sub 50k mileages and a bit of spec for less than £11k. The ES is a good compromise as the EX tends to command a premium largely for the leather seats which unless looked after age badly. Auto Trader:

I had the 189 software fix applied to my car in November and had problems with it within a month.
I got two engine warning lights on my dashboard and the car would go into limp mode. This was quite intermittent at first and the next morning the lights had disappeared and the car worked as normal for a week or so. I didn't want to pay Audi silly money to diagnose it so I asked the local garage to look at it during the MOT in March. They diagnosed and EGR valve, but they couldn't source a part for 6-8 weeks as "Audi know about a problem with their 189 software fix that causes this". I took the car to Audi and they repaired it the next day for free.... Read more
update:
After replacing the turbo boost sensor the Audi garage tell me that the fault still exists. They now want to replace the turbo....
Several months ago my 2014 Yeti went into the main dealer to replace the outboard rear seat belts, as they'd frayed. This was completed under warranty and was the second time I experienced this failure - my 2012 Urban suffered similarly after ~2 years. The outermost rear seats are in regular use and the spring intended to keep the receiving part flat tends to push it's way through the webbing, causing it to fray.
When I dropped the car off the EA189 Emmisions Update was mentioned and I was initially cautious, given the negative feedback I'd read on here (involving similalrly engined Tiguan's). I was assured my local main dealer had seen no such issues (following the update) and I elected to have it applied.... Read more
67k miles now and MPG continues to hover around 40 (no doubt impacted by recent cold weather).
VAG DPF app now reporting oil ash at 0.07 / 40%, so appears to be rising in a linear fashion. Still hoping to see well in excess of 100k miles before the DPF is full and requires replacing / cleaning....
Thought it was about time I should update you all regarding my new car.
Well it arrived on the date specified by me on the order at the price agreed with the exact spec I ordered.... Read more
The emergency braking on my Polo is a danger. The warning goes off for no reason at all, and it once braked while cornering with no cars in front, causing an unexpected laundry bill. It could have caused a crash. It makes me wonder what the designers were up to. It is of course a VAG car too, so maybe the same software or firmware.
are they much dearer to repair and maintain if you were to use Generic parts from say Euro car parts etc? Read more
so do you sugest someone to buy a bmw?
Hi, I have a 15 plate Fiat 500 with 17k miles on the clock, I have noticed a slight rattle/clunking noise on the drivers side when going over small bumps and potholes, the feel of the steering and the rest of the car is fine.
Looking online I'm seeing a lot said about top strut mounts? Does this sound about right? Had a look under both front wheels and the only difference that I was able to see was right at the top of the 'rod' there was a white plastic part missing from the drivers side.
Is this likely to be covered under warranty? And is the car safe to drive until I can get it to the dealer?
Thanks a lot, I'm not too clued up with cars! Read more
I'd check the wheel nuts/bolts first.
Hi I was diving home yesterday and noticed a whooshing sound and increased air flow through the vents when I accelerated above 1800 revs car still drove fine for abit then the dash flashed engine malfunction and went into limp mode carried on till it was safe to pull in turned the engine off waited 10 mins then back on the road. The same thing happened but when I turned the car over the second time the check engine light was still on. It drove home fine in limp mode, I've pulled it in to my diagnosic reader and it gave P00BD manufacturer control. It's a 2012 1.6 mondeo enonetic there is 86,000 on the clock. I was wondering if anyone had a similar problem and if it was and easy fix before I take it to a garage. Many thanks Read more
The first thing I thought of was a split air intake hose from the turbo to the inlet manifold. As the Doc says, cars are no longer easily fixable and people have to get away from that mentality. Even many independent garages are now getting out of their depth. Factory technical support, equipment and knowledge is essential for today's cars.
Yes, another "which is the best first car" thread.
My daughter has at last decided its time for her to take her test, get on the road and join the merry go round. She had a number of lessons back in 2014, did pretty well but had to pack it in due to factors beyond her control. I don't think it would take her many more to get "test ready."... Read more
Certainly in the same backyard, and a very scenic one it is, too. .
Thanks for the comments.
Collected car this morning - all seems to be fixed. Belt/tensioner adjusted, system bled and seems to be working fine....
