Mrs daveyjp wanted a new car - her A class was coming to 5 years old and things were failing - so at the end of March she picked up a one year old smart forfour. She has had a couple of mk 1 smarts, but for a family of three needed more seats. This fitted the bill as even the A class was larger than she needed.

First longer trip was yesterday - about 150 mile round trip to the coast - I was very impressed with it, a very grown up small car. Well built, quick enough to have fun on the twisty bits as it corners like a go kart, quiet even at motorway speeds, cruise control, satnav, heated leather seats, reversing sensors, clever rear seats to increase load space, amazing turning circle.... Supermarket diesel mainly. We don't actually have a branded fuel station near us so it's either Sainsburys or Morrisons usually.

I can vouch for Subaru's realistic fuel figures (I've had three, and hope to get a fourth in a couple of years time). In fact, I hope to get a Levorg, in the same colour Mapis Blue as the one above in the photograph. Mind you, as the article states, the bar isn't set too high to begin with. Read more

After many years I'm just wondering if anyone else had a problem. In the 1980s I owned, I think 3 new Polos and 3 new MkII Golfs over probably 6 years . I did a lot of M6 cruising and always the brakes pulled unpredictably to one side or the other (wet and dry) when braking behind the frequently stationary traffic. I never hit anything or lost control completely but it was alarming.

Subsequent MkIII , Mk IV Golfs seemed not to suffer neither have a Passat or Skoda Octavias.... Read more

Seems reasonable for that one car. But a strange problem for six cars.

Didn't VW notice it?...

This new half wit spammer that's blitzed the forum, do not click on any links, i accidentally hovered the mouse over the posting and my Malwarebytes security immediately put up messages of blocked sites.

I've put this message on main forum so everyone sees it, yes i know most of us regulars would rather stuff termites down our Y fronts than give a spammer a single second of satisfaction, but someone new might not be as wary. Read more

I was surprised and dismayed how useless the well known and recommended by knowledgeable folk the freeby securities were against this attack, only YAC (which i understand is in some sort of dispute with MWB) managed to shift the infections but after a few days odd things started happening again

So it didn't work?...

I have an aftermarket radio, I'm pretty sure it's wired correctly, as under normal situations it remembers all its presets when left. However on occasion when turning the car over, it will reboot and lose all its presets.

I am thinking a large voltage drop is causing this. The battery is pretty new (18 months old). Is there something I should be looking at for other causes? Read more

As mentioned there will be two 12v feeds, one permenantly live and one ignition switched, on most after market radios there is provision to swap these round, if you have them round the wrong way you will loose the memory when you switch the ignition off but I can't see why that should happen only when the voltage is low.

I left my car parked for a few days to come back to find the front end looking as if the local bird population had been out for a curry. Warm water and car shampoo removed the worse but there are still some sun baked remains. What is the best way to tackle these without damaging the paintwork. I have left a wet sponge on for hours but it did not soften it. Read more

I had a large splat on the bonnet the other day (been there a fww hours so dry): sprayed it with water, after 2 minutes it wiped off easily with a tissue.

I use Armor All Shield after every fifth wash and it does seem effective as a protective coating.

I've just taken out a policy with SAGA and scrolled through the T and Cs; and under the term Use;

Use for social, domestic and pleasure (SDP), excluding commuting...
This means that the vehicle cannot be used:
* to travel to and from work. [/I]

I will be contacting them as soon as possible to challenge this, and if necessary cancel the policy.

Has anyone had such an exclusion in their insurance policy? Read more

De Sisti

I contacted SAGA and explained the fact that I made an honest mistake in not asking for social and domestic pleasure and commuting. As a consequence of initally trying to set up the insurance; my documents didn't arrive. I phoned SAGA, who should have adhered to their guidelines and explained to me what was in the policy. They didn't. My email to the CEO was passed onto their customer services, who re-imburesed the initial fee I paid and only charged me for the few days the policy was in force.

Oh, I moved to a different company....

On friday I took my car to the garage for an mot. It failed on a front near side ball joint. The Garage replaced the ball joint and re did the mot. When the car was driven home ball joint failed causing the car to pull hard to the left. Luckily we were only going 15 miles an hour and I managed to avoid ploughing into the parked cars. Drove the car a few metres home and rang the Garage. They came straight out and said the new ball joint had failed. As it was good friday they couldnt get a tow truck so offered to fix it on the drive. They decided to put a new wishbone and ball joint on and send the old wishbone and failed ball joint back to the manufacturer. I have driven the car this weekend just around the area and the car feels wrong. The front nearside wheel has loads of play and the car is making clunking noises. The steering feels unstable and is pulling to the right. I'm going to ring the garage when they next open and ask them to look at the car again. I'm worried that they won't do anything and would like advice on how to approach this with them. I don't have any paper work from the repair on my drive and they took the faulty part away. I am supposed to be part exchanging the car for a new one on Tuesday but feel like there is no way we can do this now. I'm so worried I'm going to end up with no car!! Any advice would be great fully received. Many thanks, Sammy. Read more

You need to upload the image onto an image sharing site, something like www.tinypic.com

Then post the link on this forum. You can't post the image on here directly, I'm afraid.

Hi all first time on anything like these sites. I had my mot 2 days ago it failed on two front hoses which I'm cool with. But also failed on imbalance brakes on the rear local garage took them apart cleaned them had a look etc all looks fine as they did them 12 months ago. I had a look myself today and everything seems fine. But when i had a look around the brake pedal i saw fluid leaking slowly out of something I'm unsure off. Any help please. Read more

Would bleeding the brakes be necessary after replacing the wheel bearing.?

In theory no, assuming it was one hub off and one hub straight on, but it's a bit of a coincidence that's side which is now underperforming, any garage worth its salt that had to disconnect the brakes to change the bearing would have bled the system through after....

Hi
It's in reference to an earlier thread regarding screen washers, I solved the issue with the blocked washer bottle and now have front screen washers however the rear screen not even a dribble.
What I need to know is how to remove the hard plastic cover shell to get access to the wiper motor, I have removed the two central Torx screws and expected to pop off the cover but all I have managed to achieve is breaking off one of the plastic fixings I don't want to continue for obvious reasons.
Is there a knack to unclipping this cover without snapping off the fixings.
Thanks

Thanks for quick replies, nothing is ever easy is it, I'll try cleaning out the jet nozzle before deciding on my next course of action should it be needed.
