Just read the headline of an article in April edition of Car magazine. It seems that before long there will be a new breed of transmission, possibly with 3 clutches and as many as 11 gears!. You would think sorting the 'issues' with dual clutch transmissions would be more important than making them even more complex?

Electric transmission is one way forward - infinitely high torque at zero speed and absolutely stepless in operation - so the engine, diesel, petrol, LPG, CNG, hydrogen, gas turbine can be fully optimised for a single rpm and not need to spread thec rpm as at present.

The link is fine to click on - it's a youtube video.

Finally got around to watching it. What total stupidity. Over 50 mph in a 30 mph built up area on a wet night at a junction....

How do you know which plug you fit in what hole?

The platinum tip is just visible but the plugs are visibly different. The spark jumps from centre to earth on 2 plugs and earth to centre on 2 plugs. The platinum goes where the spark jumps from.i.e cylinders 1 and 4 for the centre electrode and 2 and 3 for the earth electrode....

Cant help noticing the trend for having some distinctly retro cars on various tv programs these days. Not that i'm complaing, quite the contrary with our roads filling up with 'me too' SUV's!

I started thinking about this again the other night after watching the first 2 episodes of 'The team'. One of the main characters was driving a Peugeot 604!. Metallic brown of course!.... Read more

Those were the days before leviathan SUv started to take over. Buyers say they need them to tow a caravan, utter hogwash. Or they buy them to see over other vehicles, well that appeal will soon end, yesterday I saw four SUV following each other. And before the MPV, some call them vans with windows. How did we manage in those days of deprivation?

Life was so much better, women didn't park on pavements when picking up little darlings from school, the only time their bloated SUvs go offroad!!!!

Hi Kim I came across your post while I was looking for a car that used to belong to my dad. I was just wondering if this is the same car. I last saw it in 1994 in Torquay devon. If this is the same car then I do have some history on her.

Thanks for the advice.
Have said focus on condition already, so had this in mind and the reason we have gone for a Grandis. Mazda 5 we felt was not much bigger than the Corolla Verso we currently have.

Like skidpan I will give an update about the vehicle. Only covered 600 miles with no long journeys but the computer says 42.4mpg. My brim to brim tells me I get better than that by about 8%. This week I am going back to North Yorkshire via Sheffield, so by the time I return home next week I should have a clearer idea about consumption. But for the size and weight I am pleased so far. Once located the electronic park brake is fine to use, it also releases automatically if you set off in D. The telephones for me and SWMBO paired up instantly. The DAB radio is excellent and the sterio also works well through bluetooth from my music library on my i phone. Satnav is simple to use and offers traffic reports and speed camera warnings. Cruise control is fine but I am not a fan really. Collision Avoidance works up to 17mph so you don't mow down people in car parks, over that it's up to you! Seats are very comfortable and there is lots of storage. The rear seats folded flat for when I collected some gardening supplies and the remotely operated tailgate is a godsend when carrying things. All in all a very positive experience so far. I shall update from time to time as the ownership and mileage progresses. Especially our planned long trip through Europe this summer pulling a caravan; that should reveal lots about living with the car.

I did get a spectacular deal on the the run out model. Doesn't matter much to me it is still a good vehicle and extremely well finished. Like Craig the 190bhp D4 has some punch and a kick down at most speeds gives the desired results. Just returned from my Easter trip and the fuel consumption average has risen but still only 1400 miles on it. Difficult to assess the fuel on this trip. The trip up was a nightmare, M25 was 4 miles in 90 minutes at one point. Followed by the M1 with a similar situation. After that I did hustle along a bit to make up some time so sacrificed economy for speed. I am putting up a new post after reading HJ in Saturdays Telegraph. Cheers Concrete

OP doesn't give detail on which model they are considering - W245 (1st Gen) or W246 latest generation.

I had a W245 B160 petrol and it was almost faultless for 50,000 miles - by the time I traded it the aircon had developed a fault. My wife's A class of similar age also developed the same fault....
